TOPIC: CD Release Shows
Posted  Sunday, May 4, 2003 at 1:14 PM
Post 1 of 37
I know some people were talking about this in the Slowbar thread - this Friday (May 9) Aireline and Venus Hum are both having CD release shows - Aireline at Blue Sky Court w/Imaginary Baseball League and Forget Cassettes and Venus Hum at Exit/In with...someone...I don't know.

How are we supposed to choose?! unsure.gif

Does anyone know who is opening for Venus Hum?

i'll be at the blue sky court show too. i like ibl alot and love forget cassettes. i thought that airline was pretty fun to listen to the two times i've seem them, but i don't think i could get into them enough to buy their cd.
i saw the end of venus hum's performance on one of those late night shows. and since the end was all i caught, i can't really make a proper judgement. however, i probably would have considered going to the venus hum show had it not been on the same night as forget cassettes.

on a completely unrelated note...featuresgirl, i thought i spotted you at the show friday night, but wasn't sure if it was you or not. i didn't want you to think i was being rude by not saying "hi," but i also didn't want to suffer the embarrassment if it wasn't you. if it was you, you looked somehow different from when i met you before. were you playing pool with the boys before the show?

Huh? Will you be attending the show, Stalker? blink.gif If so, we should make a point to say "hello" to each other. I hope to be there, the IBL/Forget Cassettes show, that is.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

Which show were they on (venus hum)? I heard that they had been on one of them, but the guy who told me about it didn't know if it was Leno or Letterman, and which day it was.

Their show at SXSW was really good... I still can't decide!

Ditto.

By the way, BSC has improved greatly soundwise. I heard that the guy that did the sound at Exit/In works there now. Even if it did suck there, those two opening bands are a can't-miss.

Aireline / IBL / Forget Cassettes is the place to be. I'm actually kind of surprised that more people here aren't into Aireline but I guess to each their own. The one time I saw Venus Hum it felt like a half-assed attempt at sounding like Bjork - and I already own enough Bjork.

yeah, i see people and i know who they are but i don't really think many people know who i am. so i just don't really say hi cause i don't want to be weird. seems like most people know each other already or are getting to meet everyone else but i haven't really. but yeah, that was me. i mean, i think so. actually, i saw you havesomesoma and i was meaning to come say hi but then matt asked me if i wanted to play pool. then we had to explain to rollum what cutthroat was and then matt beat us both even though we had a deal going that we would both try and make rollum lose first. but alas, i lost first. maybe it was cause brianw was making me nervous or something.... unsure.gif

by the way, has anyone heard that little commercial thing on WRVU that says "hi i'm so and so of so and so band" and "i'm so and so of so and so band" then says, 'hi this is matthew pelham of the features"? It is SO cute. biggrin.gif it makes me happy every time i hear it.

speaking of the radio, what station is 91.1 in Nashville? I was leaving on Saturday night and I heard a great hard punk show followed by a Rockabilly show... It seemed like a very cool station to me, as in Louisville we have two butt rock stations, two classic rock stations and fifteen pop/Hip-Hop stations.

i am the world trade center is opening for venus hum. they're from athens. i think they suck. apparently they were at the house party i went to in athens with paul from interpol. i would've made fun of them if i had known they were there. anyway, they're a boyfriend/girlfriend band, but the guy is gay. apparenly neither one of them know it yet.

and venus hum was on leno.

i'm not into the rave scene so i'll be at the imaginary baseball league show.

i am the world trade center opened up for the faint at the red rose two years ago. i was sitting on the bench inside the red rose quietly talking to a few friends during their performance, and the girl in the band came up to us and asked us to be quiet in the middle of a song. WHAT THE FUCK. afterward she said came up and said "i just find that really distracting..." (i think she expected an apology, which i did not deliver).

to further prove sina's theory: the girl in IATWTC's last name is dykes.

anyway, i'll probably be at the venus hum show; my brother-in-law works with them.

This show will be most excellent. Carl and Ray have already hinted at it, but at least I get to leave early since Aireline is playing last. As I told Carl the other night, I just can't respect someone that wears a Tennessee Titans piece of merchandise during a show (case in point: January @ The Boro w/ Features). That and I just don't care for their music. On the flip side, I am already a Forget Cassettes fan and am growing to love IBL quite a bit. I am so glad that they are playing. The mic will be in hand.

Also, the BSC is fucking cool.

Yeah, their songs kind of do suck. But I saw them one year ago at the Red Rose (not when smee got yelled at : ( and it was kind of amusing. The guy is totally gay- I had no idea that he or anyone else thought otherwise. But they do coordinated dance moves & the only music is their Casio, so they have lots of time to fill with cheesy dancing. I'm a big sucker for that, even if there's no actual talent involved.

I know I only listen to music if the band dresses right. 90% of music is image. If you're wearing the wrong t-shirt then who cares what the music sounds like. And if they buy their clothes at a store I don't like, forget about it.

It's a more superficial way of pointing out their suck factor. If I pick on a group for their clothing, it should be assumed that they suck way too much musically for me to disregard their lack of fashion.

I'm not sure if this was addressed towards me or "foldsfan", but I will agree with both of you. Ryan is a badass drummer with a unique and powerful style (much like Doni of FC) and a very nice guy. Aaron is a friggin' amazing singer and songwriter (and seems pretty cool). I'll also add that Ben is a quality guy. Unfortunately, I have yet to meet the guitarist. Maybe friday...

And your only reason, Ray!?! Not a fan of Forget Cassettes!?! What's wrong with you?

Sorry to fixate on this. I would say Doni is an amazing drummer, and by some accounts he is. However, he has NO concept of dynamics whatsoever. He's either playing full on at full volume or not playing at all. When the other instrumentation in your band is vocals and guitar (aside from that clever use of the Rhodes) it's overkill and frankly tasteless to play that loud. And he was a dick to one of my roommates, so there. biggrin.gif

Actually, that just sounds like a generalization of the whole band. That seems to me to be exactly what they're going for. Most people I talk to don't like it (or don't get it), but it definitely works for me. I think few people can argue that they're not interesting at the very least.

When Doni plays with Bare, Jr., he alters his style to fit that band (at least, in my opinion). Of course, he's still bored with the slower-paced songs, which is evident by the extra flare he adds between beats.

Never heard him play with Bare Jr., but I have heard that he doesn't alter his style to fit the songs at all, and that he instead bashes away with the same abandon as with F.C. Whatever. It's not important.
