TOPIC: Cigarettes

Buckley and I had an in-depth conversation on tobacco earlier today and it led me to wonder what cigarettes you other Feature creatures smoke. As far as I can tell, all of the Features smoke RJ Reynolds' Camel Lights. I prefer Parliament Full Flavors and Alpine Menthol Lights, both made by Phillip Morris. What do you like and why?

Ah yes, a topic about something that I hold dear to my heart ( and is ironically damaging it). My cigarette of choice is the tried and true Lucky Strike. It is so excellent and nonfiltered. Of all cigarettes, this is to me the most flavorful and robust smoke on the market. This brand of cigarettes bring joy to me like few other things do. My back-up brand, in case I cannot find them or if I am low on cash, has to be Camel. In that case I get the Camel Filter 100's. Now, all said, I am addicted and need a Lucky.

Jesus, Alpines are disgusting, my personal opinion. I smoke whatever is on sale. My smoke of choice has gone downhill, from Marlboro Reds, to Mediums, to Ultra Lights. I skipped Lights. I'm currently smoking Camel Lights, cause they were buy 2, get 1 free, however for the past week I've been smoking Parliament LIghts, cause they were buy 2, get 1 free.

I felt the same way at first, but I decided to finish the pack since I payed for them. Coincidentally, I grew to like them. The tobacco store that I work for only sells FF 100s and Light 85s. The FF 100's did not taste as good as the Lights in my opinion. *Note* All Alpines are mentholated.

I never had understood the whole light thing. You're getting less nicotine, but still killing your lungs. That's why I go all out and kill'em faster with my nonfilter, full-flavor, man-killer Lucky's

Camel Lights, for sure. I have tried many, many brands of cigarettes in my life, and nothing tastes better than a Camel Light. They've been my choice since early 1997, when I came out of a phase of Dunhills, cloves, and Bidis.

Can I also say that I hate smoking and wish I didn't?

i think you, mike d, and myself will have to quit together.

i'm a camel light soft pack man as well, although i began my smoking career (age 19) with lucky strike light filters. they were by one get one free for about a year and they were kind of modish (the target emblem, much like vantage).

17-19:dunhill, nat sherman, gitanes, etc
20-current:camel lights(exceptions occuring only when there are sales....the aforementioned lucky strike two-fers....marlboro if they're around 30 cents less.....occasionally i'll splurge on gitanes and pretend like i'm serge gainsbourg)

One of my old teachers told me his surefire quitting method. He locked himself in a tiny closet, put towels underneath the door, chain-smoked two packs of cigarettes, and proceeded to throw up for a long time.

Ditto, but I'm pretty sure I'm still allergic.

To enhance my geekiness, I must reveal that I was on allergy shots for 8 years and I even had to go on a special Allergy Diet in 2nd grade that allowed me to eat only pistachio nuts and fruit. That sucked.

Truer words have never been spoken! This is an excellent segue in to how much I hate the existence of Marlboro Lights (particularly in the box). That has to be the least creative cigarette that a person can smoke. PaulFreaksMeOut and Brother Love can attest to the fact that I hate these cigarettes with a passion. People seem to inherently smoke them as if no other tobacco is available to them. I will never understand this. All people ever smoked in high school were Marlboro Lights. It's dumb. At the store I work for, 75% of our customers buy Marlboro Lights in the box. And we have about 400 customers a day. It makes me sad to know people are passing on Parliaments, Lucky's, Camels, and Basics, just because none of their friends smoke them. Silly youngsters.

I too prefer the cork filter. It is supreme in it's cool factor.

I have many things to add to this topic, starting...now.

I'm smoking American Spirits right now, only because the Pipe and Tobacco store is on my walk from work to lunch. I like them, other than the fact it takes 15 minutes to smoke one. That can be annoying.

As for pipe smoking girls, I have converted one girl to smoking pipes. She always loved the smell of mine, so I bought her a fairly cheap one, a tamper, some pipe cleaners, and 2 ounces of her favorite blend. She seemed to enjoy it, I havent' really spoken to her since. I think she was using me for my Black Cherry tobacco.

Pipes and my front porch go hand in hand in the spring and fall. All pipe smoking girls are invited.

Unlimited cool factor!

I have a "Sherlock Holmes" pipe that PFMO named "Watson." It is pretty big, but I love it nonetheless. Luckily, it has not been tainted with "alternatives" by some of my friends who also smoke pipes...I think it might be a law in Gallatin that you must begin smoking with a pipe. It seems that all of my friends started with a pipe, which led to cigars, only to end with cigarettes. I vowed to never smoke cigarettes, because I associated them with white trash. Then, I decided to get dirty...

Pipes, my first love. My first one was given to me by mr. dawson, I called it "Booboo" (there's a story behind that, it's just too long to tell while keeping your interest). Gradually, however, as I got more and more lazy, pipes became bothersome and inconvenient, especially when having an evening on the town, so cigarettes were the obvious choice.

I've always thought menthols were more harsh. Looks like I'm gonna go for day two off the standoff as my lungs are still in a constant state of hacking and my throat is more sore each hour. Maybe if I were this sick for a couple weeks I'd never smoke again, sounds easy enough.... In reality, it's super-easy to not smoke at home, by myself. It's a completely different story next time I go to a bar, or club, or work, or outside, shit.

I feel compelled to smoke whenever I read this thread, as well as whenever I watch movies with lots of smoking in them or am around anyone who is smoking when I am not. The power of suggestion is great, and I am weak. Think I'll go have a cigarette right now.

Mmmm....fiberglass.
Yes, most Full Flavor Menthol cigarettes and snuff tobaccos (Copenhagen, Skoal, etc.) contain fiberglass, but to my knowledge light menthols and ultra light menthols do not contain fiberglass. I mean, if fiberglass were really bad for you, they wouldn't let them sell it. Now, run along and smoke some menthols.

That's the best time for a cigarette! It helps your buzz and it takes the bad alcohol taste out of your mouth and replaces it with a wonderful smoke flavor!

I smoke the Marlboro Mediums because at Compton's they're $5.43 for the three pack. The thing that get's me is why don't I break down and get the goddamned carton? They're like $23 with 12 packs which is a little less that $2 a pack...that's like 1991 prices when i started. Even though I've smoked for 12 years it seems like your fucking hopeless when you start to buy the cartons.

I used to have a really nice pipe. I went down to that tobacco store on the square in Murfreesboro and the shopkeep pointed me in the direction of a good pipe for a reasonable amount of money. It survived Will Witherow's dog gnawing it but did not however, escape Colvert's room. My guess is a dirty pile of laundary elf stole it. tongue.gif

Ah the good ol days...

I've only smoked when I was drunk - partly that drunken "I'll do anything!" and partly being addicted from *someone's* second-hand smoke! Menthol cigarettes are the only ones that did anything for me though, so I think I was craving the menthol and not the nicotine.

Aside to anyone who's seen me smoke them: YES, I do realize that they are really obnoxious. However, how many people do you think try to bum them from me? I love it when girls come to the tobacco store and buy Capri's or Virginia Slims. There's just something so right about it. The ones that buy Eve's and Misty's on the other hand...now, that's a little sketchy.

Tell your friend with the Marlboros that she gets what she deserves for smoking those pieces of shit. And tell her it's with love from the cigarette nazi.

LOL

You're not really a bad influence, because all of my friends have taken up chainsmoking. So when I go home, I'm sure they'll all be smoking...It shouldn't surprise me they started, since they've all been obsessed with carrying around lighters for years...At least I was accomplishing something while breathing in your smoke, rather than hanging out downtown (there, where "downtown" is a big shopping area)! smile.gif

And I'm over it now...I think it was being around three people smoking at once that got me hooked.

I hate cigarettes.

I love cigarettes.

That's my relationship with them. God, I've been smoking for over 9 YEARS now. I'm well into the zone of "long-term smoker." I have panic attacks when I really think about that and what it means. I'm terrified of getting cancer. Yet I keep smoking. I know, I know...that's such an original cycle to be in, but it really eats at me. I need to quit smoking, if not for my sake, then for my future children's sake.

If you're going to smoke, though, do yourself a favor and smoke the best: Camel Lights.

I to have the occasional cigarette guilt, but I quckly get over it. After the guilt passes and it's time to get some smoky treats I'll stick with my trusty Camel Filter 100's in most cases, and occasionally when I want a tasty menthol I choose my Benson and Hedges menthol lights. They're the best.

ELT, I'm with ya man, im going on 5 months, (all cheating aside).

Speaking of redneck habits, didnt there used to be a girl that went to Features shows that dipped skoal? I vaguely remember that from a few years ago.

I'll have to admit, I was into chewing tobacco also, for a short term. I grew up in the sticks of Virginia, started smoking at the age of 14, and didnt try Skoal until i was 18 when i had a terrible respiratory infection. It turns out that skoal and other chewing tobaccos are soooo much more addictive, higher levels of nicotine. anyway, needless to say, i quit that very quickly and now am still nicotine-free nate.

Good luck to all of you. And for future reference, (i may sound square) but smoking isnt cool, you may think it looks cool, or its a fun social habit, whatever....(I guess thats what I thought too when i was 14)......but you'll catch on sooner or later especially once you start feeling the negative health consequences.

Good luck to all of you. And for future reference, (i may sound square) but smoking isnt cool, you may think it looks cool, or its a fun social habit, whatever....(I guess thats what I thought too when i was 14)......but you'll catch on sooner or later especially once you start feeling the negative health consequences.
awesome....this is turning into a support group. i agree. i think(and hope) that most people get addicted by accident when they're teenagers. i've met a few people who've started in their 20s. i'm sure it has something to do with drinking.

The old statistic I remember is that if you havent started smoking by the age of 19, you probably never will. This why all the controversy about advertising smokes for kids.

However, Miss Sept. brings that other aspect of smoking. Those kids who just got to college, and never tried smoking as a kid, whether it be from stricter parents or were'nt around it or whatever. Then they get to a place where they can do what they want, and they choose to smoke. Ive seen this in a few people, my sister, my mother. But in these cases, at least in my family and friends, they end up quitting within a year or 2. The ones that usually stay hooked through college are the ones that started when they were young, and are past the whole rebellion stage.

I started when I was 16 because my boyfriend smoked and eventually I gave in and tried one. I spent a long long time trying to get him to quit, and then finally just joined the club.

My first time was with a Marlboro Red. I got dizzy and had to sit down. So how in the hell did I descend into the depths of VS120M's. I don't know, but I think I will need the patch or something. I know I need to quit, but I don't want it bad enough yet.

I think deciding to get pregnant is really the only thing that will make me want to quit for real. I am willing to give myself cancer, but not my kid...

I smoked Reds for over 4 years. Then I was a freshman / sophmore in college and chained smoked soooo much more, and had to downgrade. This was around the time that I had really bad respiratory infections and tried chewing tobacco to compensate for the pain of smoking.

i dont think thats very true about cigarettes, but rather about alcohol and sex.
also, i think that parents that are more strict can easily cause cigarette, alcohol, and sex addiction [which is pretty obvious]- but not necessarily once the kid moves out. i think its more likely that it happens right under their nose.

I participated in many "sins" under my parents nose. and did a fairly good job of hiding them all. Some dont though, my sister is the "good kid" because she didnt have a social life growing up, and my parents didnt have to worry about her. everyone is different I guess, but i have seen many people break free from the chains of the 'rents and start to smoke, drink, have loads of sex, swear, etc etc etc. Luckily or unluckily I started sewing my wild seeds at a young age.

Speaking of redneck habits, didnt there used to be a girl that went to Features shows that dipped skoal? I vaguely remember that from a few years ago.
I know one who's name is Beth and she's a real cool chick. From what I can tell, she is very proud of her "redneck" status. As a rule I don't normally dig the combination of tobacco and ladies, but somehow, she makes it work. She still goes to shows by the way.

My first time was with some half-smoked cigarette that I pulled out of an ashtray. I was alone, I was 15, and it tasted so nasty. I didn't really properly smoke for another month or two, when someone showed me how to inhale. That cigarette was a Harley Davidson. I continued to smoke HDs for a while.

Oh yes...... I remember those. I was around 15 or 16 when a friend stole a pack of Harley Davidson's from his dad and sold them to me. When you are 15 and a smoker, you smoke what you can get your hands on. HD's are tough. I also remember camel filterless when i was around 15 or 16. But mostly I loved Reds. Even that red box seems very appealing to me now.

wow, im really dumb. ive always thought snuff was the same as dip. no, ive never tried snuff.
Well...there is snuff that is "dip." Originally, snuff was a term for ground-up tobacco (very dust-like) that the Europeans snorted through their noses; and US southerners (men, and many, many ladies that are now your grandparents age and older) put it in the gumline of their mouth. The same snuff is still sold today (the original Red Seal, Garrett, Bruton, etc.) in small cans about two inches tall and one wide, as well as large cans almost as big as a 20 oz soft drink. However, it is usually only found in tobacco specialty stores or in small towns, because the demand in non-farming areas is not that big. "Moist snuff" is the proper term for dip like Skoal, Copenhagen, Wolf, etc., which is sold in the fine cut and long cut forms. I have a can of Cherry nasal snuff (which could also be dipped) here at the apartment. There is a Rogue's Gallery of messageboard members who have been seduced into it's sinus-clearing ways, but I choose not to name them. Some of them are champs at snorting lines of the stuff known as Cherry nasal snuff. It's fun, but I find that it is hardly an addictive habit. Gateway habit, perhaps, but nothing I could ever imagine any of us doing on any sort of regular basis.

On another note, the girl that dips is hot, but I'm not a huge fan of girls that chew or dip moist snuff. With that, I will say in response to foldsfan's point about smokers being unattractive, that it's a relative thing. If you are a smoker, people of the opposite sex that smoke probably don't disgust you. If you are a non-smoker, then you probably don't find smoker's appealing, because you are not a smoker. I think that the same holds true for dip and chew. Now, some people I know in Hartsville and Gallatin would go nuts for this girl who dips, but word is that she's engaged. I still think she's hot.

No, no, no. Dipping is about the most disgusting thing a girl can do. Actually, it's really disgusting for guys, too.

I tried dipping a few times back in my younger days, but it was just too messy for me. Bandits were about all I could handle.

My grandfather was having surgery, and most of my family was in the waiting room. My dad dipped Skoal, and there was a Coke can at his side for spitting. My little sister picked up what she thought was soda, took a drink, and had the worst look on anyone's face I have ever seen in my life. She spit it out all over herself, and started to cry. It was even funnier 'cause she was only three. I'm glad she didn't throw up, though, because then I would have gotten sick.

GSTP pretty well hit the nail on the head in his description. My boss chews the large-size Mammoth Cave twist tobacco. Of the people that I know who chew twist tobacco on a regular basis, he is the youngest. I think he's about 54. Twist tobacco is one of only a few forms of tobacco without national distribution (bricks, dry snuff). Anytime that you happen upon it, you can rest assured that it was farmed and manufactured within a hundred miles or so. For example, the ones that we sell are: Mammoth Cave (KY), Warren County (KY), and King Bee (Gallatin!). There is also a Cumberland Valley twist, but we don't sell it. In Arkansas, they would not have these, but instead, have something more localized, which I have always thought to be cool. However, with the advent of tobacco sites on the internet, someone in California could probably get their hands on any brand of twist.

As far as chewing the twist, my boss always uses a knife and cuts a small portion off (maybe 1/4 of an inch) and chews it, spits, etc. I have to say that I really like the smell of twist tobacco. The nicotine levels are insane!
