TOPIC: De Novo Dahl @ Red Rose: Fri. 5-16-03

Since this is listed in the Rage, I don't think my initial source will be too upset about me mentioning this show. I was told originally that Forget Cassettes would be playing as well, but they are not listed in the Rage. Instead, The Good Gospel Truth is opening. The show starts at 9 on Friday (5-16-03). Above all else, it's free! I would also assume that it is all ages. I expect to see many of the messageboard socialites there.

Also, Jason Jones played a concert last night. I've always wanted to see a mb member in concert. laugh.gif

I think it should be noted that this is not a traditional show, but an art opening of some sort. I'm not really sure what to expect, but I'd like to go. I'll try to go if I can also honor a previous commitment.

Prior to my introduction to Indie rock, I had some less honorable concert choices. However, as redneck as it may be, the Lynyrd Skynyrd/Ted Nugent show at AmSouth two years ago was a fucking cool time. My primary interest was Ted Nugent, because he is a badass and puts on a very enjoyable show - full of flaming arrows and jokes about Jesse Jackson & Janet Reno. If I have the cash, I may get to see him at AmSouth again sometime soon.

Also, the Skynyrd show is being filmed for their new, live DVD. Be a part of history! wink.gif dry.gif

You don't know what you're missing. The good news is that you'll be able to check them out in EP form by the end of the month.

I will eventually give a listen to DND doing a full set, however, it won't be tomorrow night. Hopefully, they'll play a lot this summer...and in Nashville too.

Just tell 'em "Jesus is my copilot." How can they argue?

Which reminds me of a spin on that bumper sticker that I saw recently. It was something to the effect of:

"Jesus was my copilot, but we crashed into the mountains and I had to eat him."

Interesting.

Ok, I've mentioned this before. But you guys should totally do it (not literally, you guys aren't old enough for that kinda thing). Go to the show together, it would be cute. And I would definately know who FFF was if he was with you Rachel. smile.gif

Definitely a show tonight, It's an art opening/photography/music show. The art and photos are very good. and it's free. starts around 9PM. Smelly Yellow Costume opens up. I've never seen them but it sounds interesting (something about Game Boys as the principal instrument.) Teddy will be singing a duet in De Novo Dahl tonight, a first! I'll be both a participator and a spectator tonight. It'll be good to see everyone. Too bad JC won't be there, though.

every show i've ever been to at red rose is all ages. but then again, if you're that concerned, you should go check the red rose's web site. either that or call them (their number should be found on the site somewhere).

I did. The opening guy with the Super Nintendo was very entertaining and just as it started to get old, his set was finished. He timed that quite nicely and it was a change of pace for what we usually get with openers. The slide show featured some pretty pictures, but I don't really know how to review a slide show, so I'll move on.

I don't know what to make of DND and I don't know if last night was the right venue to judge them in. The sound was pretty bad and, as HSS pointed out after the show, the vocals all blended together to from a big "blaaahhherrrr" moan noise. The music was catchy and reminded me of the Dandy Warhols at times, so that was a plus (or this was just due to the bad sound system, and I'm completely off). But I have to be honest and say that the lead singer/acoustic guitarist completely detracts from everything positive about the band. I just found his stage presence and the way that he played guitar to be very distracting and annoying. I can't judge his voice, since I couldn't hear it. The keyboardists/singer guy could easily step up and replace acoustic guitar/singer guy and I think they would be better for it. Of course, due to the horrible sound, I may just be missing something and his voice may be the redeeming quality in him. The other guitarist was very sassy and highly entertaining. Overall, the bad sound and the lead singer sort of turned me off. If they were to open up for the Features or IBL or play another free show somewhere, I would gladly go see them again and hope to be proven wrong.

Yep, it was was very good. I would say that I either "really enjoyed" or "liked" 2/3 of the DND songs. The last and only previous DND concert that I saw (last fall) did not impress me much, but that could be because I left early and missed some of the better songs. I will definitely try to see them again when they play. I just wish that their lead singer were cooler. I guess I've been spoiled with more enjoyable/less embarrassing stage presences. No offense to the DND members among us on the board, because you shouldn't pay attention to my bullshit anyway. Good show!

The guy with Game Boy was so fucking great! His presentation (I guess that's what it should be called) was really cool and made me feel like grabbing the nearest available glow sticks. Paul did the Ian Curtis dance in honor of the music and complementary videos.

Finally, the photography exhibition was fun to view as well. Though an unnamed member of this board likened the picture of sanddunes to "big sand boobies."

after waiting so long to finally see dnd, i can honestly say that i am completely and utterly undecided about my liking for them. i wasn't disappointed, but didn't have the proper chance to be blown away either. from all the rave reviews from fellow board members, i had very high expectations. and high expectations are often not a good thing to carry with you when going to see a band for the first time. i thought their music was very cute and catchy, tightly-played. but the vocals to every song seemed to be "mumble mumble mumble." i couldn't tell you one word they sang all night. i know this wasn't their fault though. i will have to give them another try in a venue where i can hear what they're singing and get a better feel for them. the guitarist was just about the cutest thing i've ever seen though. he knew how to work the dimples the way that matt pelham knows how to work the crazy eye-rolls. well played. and i liked the lead singer 'cause he's cool and he does moves.

Well... this is just gonna sound like what everyone else already said. But that's not anything new, right? I very much enjoyed the nintendo dude. He seemed really nice and took what he was doing very seriously. I especially liked the part about how Nintendo turned him and his brother into "dirty liars". I must say that I had a spliting headache during the DND set, and left maybe half the way through. The music was defiantely enjoyable and I would go see them again. Man, that guitarist sure is sassy! smile.gif

the girl's name is too weird and she wasn't wearing a belt at the last show i saw of theirs. the bass player hides onstage and looks incredibly uncomfortable. the drummer is good (and hot, drumming or not.) the singer/ guitarist almost ruins everything so i don't look at him at all. the guitar player makes silly faces for no reason at all and it was cute the first two shows, but not anymore. the keyboard player is alright. for me, they don't really seem like a band at all. just 6 people on stage doing 6 different things in 6 different ways. the stage presence is horrible, it may just be because of the fact that i have to completely ignore the singer. i like the music, though.

For what it's worth, I think that's one of their strengths. They're one of the most interesting and full-of-personality bands I can recall seeing. I believe I've said before that they should sell action figures (like Harlow and the Anniversary). Joel's antics aren't that distracting and Derek's expressions will never get old in my book. Sina just doesn't like Seriah (sp?) because she's hott.

just 6 people on stage doing 6 different things in 6 different ways.
Sina just doesn't like Seriah (sp?) because she's hott.
i agree, carligula. that is one of the coolest things about them, that they are all so different and each bring something different to the band. but i still think they sound like a band and not just a group of musicians.

but i have to admit, usually, they sound completely incredible together, but the sound was HORRIBLE friday night. i have heard them plenty of times and i have never heard the vocals sound like that. mark's (keyboard) microphone was doing him no justice. usually their harmonies are really tight and sound great. but it was hard to understand the words, and i know a lot of the songs already. sad.gif i couldn't understand a word that derek or serai said so hopefully they will try that again in may.

i think they're one of the greatest acts in nashville right now, and i bet the may 31st show will be a lot better than that one. you can usually hear pretty well at slow bar.
another thing about them is that they are all so nice, just like the features. it's nice to know that they're not cocky or rude or anything and that makes me like them a lot more. rolleyes.gif
maybe i could sing along
to your neverending songs,
i'm just looking for some fun

Interesting that you think people's names and whether or not they wear a belt have bearing on the quality of their music.
if you read the whole post you would've seen where i said that i like the music.
aside from that, here's some simple instructions:
a) get off my ass
b) get a sense of humour

serai or whatever is attractive (carl) other than that i have no real opinion of her. maybe if i give you my autograph you'll stop taking everything i say so seriously. wait, then what would you have to post about?

i have never been to a message board but i made a special visit to say that i am so sorry for annoying a few of you on friday night at the red rose. i appreciate you coming to see and hear the band i am in. and i also appreciate your honesty. but you see, the truth is that i am just an ugly apeman. i was born this way. i have spent my entire life trying to shake off my primal instincts of embarrassing stage presence, but unfortunately they seem to be part of me. after years of ridicule for all sorts of expressive behavior i have become numb to harsh words. all i can do now is apologize to those of you who had to view that hideous display of individuality, but please, i beg of you! do not think for even a moment that it was done without shame. for all i have ever wanted was to be normal, and to have normal movements and normal guitar playing.
OH WHY GOD?! WHY? why must i be so cursed to ruin my own band?

i would like to thank some of you for the kind words you have written in my defense. your unbridled acceptance of such a monster conjurs up memories of the story of the hunchback of notre dame and the kindess that the beautiful gypsy girl showed to the poor beast. i am greatful for your sympathy

and by the way i am not " the lead singer " as some of you call me.
i am one of two. mark and i are collectively are " the lead singers "

i wish i could talk more, but i must go dance about my house like a crazed fool for a few hours to get it out of my system before the next show

Man, man, ma\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0n. True, the sound was crap at the gig. For a band who transmits quite a bit of information musically as well as vocally (ie harmony) Red Rose's PA is certainly not their friend. I thought it was great cause I know the songs well enough.

As for Joel needing to be cooler. Get to know him and you'll see he's the coolest & most sincere ugly apeman motherfucker out there. You rock brother.

Let's look at logic here...

It was not worth his time to post. I'll take that at face value.
You responded to a post that was not worth the time it took... That makes your response worth even less.
And if his post is worthless because of the subject, doesn't that make the previous post you made, which prompted his post, worthless as well by default?
One would be inclined to yell 'hypocrite' here, but i'll refrain.
what proof do we even have that this is the guitarist from DND? none... it could just be someone trying to make a point.

I'll grant that this response is worth nothing.

i thought his post was incredibly funny and good criticism on how many people judge others.

Can't she just be a beautiful girl? Is it important that she is a gypsy? Racist.

And Sina, I think as far as bands defending themselves go, it is hard not to sometimes. You of all people should know that it is hard to turn the other cheek to criticism. Anyway, I think he did a much better job handling it than Senryu or quite a few other bands who have felt the wrath of The Features message board.

I like De Novo Dahl.

your logic was dumb for the following reasons

1) i didn't go out of my way to read this thread or this message board. i visit/ post on this message board a million times a day. this, nor any other thread has never had any affect on me being here more or less.

2)me and holeypeacoat have already stated that we are insanely bored and i, for one, am at work. so no, i don't have anything else better to do.

3) i'm not being a hypocrite, i've never in my life registered on a message board just becaue i heard people were criticizing me and believe me, that's happened a million times.

My feeling is that belts are not quite as necessary on girls as they are on boys. My biology teacher used to tuck his shirt into his jeans, while wearing no belt. It annoyed me to no end. Why do I care? I don't really know, but maybe it's because I was embarrassed for him. Anyway, girls don't have to wear belts. It seems to be a preference issue with them.

Indeed. I like them more ever since foldsfan gave me a copy of the Lightning 100 show. Hearing the lyrics helped a ton! Also, the keyboardist can sing better than I thought (but it was probably the Red Rose's sound system that hurt him). It's neat to think about how young they are and how much their catalogue could increase over the next couple of years. I also forgot to mention that I enjoy the tightness of their set. There's not a whole lot of dilly-dallying between songs. My final thought: The songs with more of a synth sound are by far and away my favorites. I hope that they expand on the synth/key aspect, instead of the more soulful, southern sounding music that they also play.

well, i think that the show was good....not nearly as good as what they do normally. anyone who saw the show MUST give them another chance or you will be depriving yourself of something grand. yeah, the sound sucked, but who cares, they are just plain entertaining, even just looking at them is enough for me.

serai, for the record, is the correct spelling of her name.

Upon listening to the Lightning 100 show many times, it has become apparant that the keyboardist cannot make a bad song. I am left to assume that the songs which feature him singing lead are the ones that he has written. I love his voice too. I think that there are five or six of his that I listen to over and again, skipping the rest.

you're obviously too stupid to even comprehend what was said between me and poohbear's girl or to pick up on simple sarcasm. so i'll take the time to explain it to you.

you're an idiot. my name is sina. serai's name is serai. we both have "weird" names. i get told a million times a day that my name is "different" and "weird." and she may be told the same. by saying she has a weird name while i also have a weird name was a joke. GET IT? HAHAHAHA it's so funny.
now, there was a thread not too long ago about fashion or something and wearing a belt when you have belt loops was an issue. serai wasn't wearing a belt at the last show i saw and that has nothing to do with her ability to play music or whether or not i like her the music she or her band plays THEREFORE I WAS BEING SARCASTIC.

now, i can go back to "work" and you can go back to calling members of features management 50 times a day.

I'm glad to hear that so many of you got to check out De Novo Dahl. I think that if you see them again, you'll like them even more. The Red Rose is not exactly Carnegie Hall when it comes to live sound, and I think that DND is a band that tends to grow on listeners. I know that for me, it took a couple of shows for their music to really click with me, but now I'm hard pressed to find a band that I love more.

As far as Joel's stage presence goes, I think that it's just not something you're used to. I know that many of us here are into a lot of bands (Features included) where the vocalists are not so charismatic, and are more reserved. And maybe for that reason, when we see a singer who is more charismatic, our instinct is to be turned off by it. But I would encourage you to not immediately write off something (or someBODY) that is outside of your comfort zone, as you may be missing something incredible. When I see Joel onstage, I see someone who has let go of all of his inhibitions, and I think that that's a beautiful thing.

Yes, I'm new to this board and I was thinking about posting, but I got nervous because I'm not wearing a belt today, so I may get ripped open about it. Good thing sina can't see me (thank God for computers). But don't you worry, sina, I see your sarcasm. Like you said, it's all a big joke, funny funny. I bet you are the hottest, funniest girl in the whole world! I only wish I knew you. As for De Novo Dahl, I approve...they're great. I think they're great people and play some great music. Joel's individuality is what makes him so unique (keep on dancing you crazy ape!). You can see the passion he has for his music, which I like. In fact, I think each one of them expresses their passion for what they're doing in their own unique way (you guys and gal are HOT!). I can't wait to see their show at Slow Bar. Are you gonna be there sina? I sure hope so...since you're so hot and have such great hair, maybe you can give the rest of us some pointers. HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE...

You hit the nail on the head. How someone acts when they listen to or play music should be whatever the listener or artist feels. If I had been lucky enough to see a band like Joy Division in the late 70's I would have thought Ian Curtis was pretty whacked visually. But who gives a fuck. It's cool music, it's cool people, seeing someone do things like that is awesome, it's really primal. Hey! Like an ape! laugh.gif

If a band ever arises in this area with a few anxious, urgent songs and the lead singer dances like Ian Curtis - you can bet that Ray Davies and I will be there front and center everytime.

Unfortnately, I couldn't ever see Joel doing the Ian Curtis dance. Robert Plant is much more appropriate for him, with his hair and all.

Hmm. Nice editing of my post. You are so smart!

You mean you were not grinding all over his backside while your shirt was unbuttoned down to your pants and your bra was in full view? It kind of put a strain on a conversation I was having with him at the time. I have to stop paying so much attention to what happens directly in front of my face. That was a while ago though, and only the first of many episodes that I was unhappily subjected to.

But that wasn't you, right? Sorry, my mistake. Guess my eyes have been playing tricks on me. I will go right on down to Pearl Vision and get them checked!

Carl, if you keep on having trouble, you may need to get padded straps. If that doesn't help, you might want to think about getting a reduction or having someone walk behind you holding up your boobs all the time to relieve the strain.

It kind of put a strain on a conversation I was having with him at the time.
OH MY GOD

you talk to the features' manager?!?!?!!?!?! holy shit, do you think you can get him to introduce me to the band?!?!?!

anyway, ask yourself when this said "incident" happened and then you'll realize how pathetic it is for you to still be hung up on whatever you said i did. and the fact that you still remember what i was wearing is sad.

i'd also like to point out how scary it is for me to have people i don't know talk about me, call me by my first name, and point out little things like i bumped into them once at a show.
on the other hand, i only know important people and the fact that poohbear's girl has had oh so many "encounters" with me and i still have no idea who she is just makes me think she's a nobody.
but isn't it always the nobodies that turn out to be the serial killaz?

I was sticking with the bra stuff... it's much more entertaining than arguing with someone on a message board after you've gotten your point across and the conversation is over.

Sina, would you like to comment on bras instead? I'm sure yours is bigger, prettier and has been seen by more rock stars than mine.

I have never understood the whole bra burning thing. I find wearing a bra much more comfortable than going without. And what says feminism more clearly than a good, supportive bra?

Also, the best bras are found at Victoria's Secret.

I like cotton bras better than lace ones.

Satin bras are fun too.

I hate strapless bras and bras that do up at the front.

Bras rock.

Bra talk? I'm down.

Victoria's Secret charges sixty bucks for shitty bras. The underwire poked completley through my bra the first week I had it. It's my only strapless bra so I am forced to wear it sometimes. It is very painful.

I like cotton better then lace. Satin is good too. But lace looks funny under your shirt.

The best bras are found at Target/TJ Maxx & others like it. Cheap, comfy and durable.

I'm not a fan of the bra.

Their "Body by Victoria" is pretty good - it's plain and smooth under your shirt and takes a while before anything funky happens to it from repeated washings.

I think I know the strapless you are talking about. Does it look like a bandeau top with straps that attach if you want? I thought it was so great when I tried it on and bought 2. After about 4 wearings each, both had a blowout with the underwire. The dang things escaped out of their seamed homes and proceeded to stab me in the armpits. That's not cool!

Lace does look funny under your shirt unless you wear a jacket over. I wish it didn't because it looks so pretty sad.gif

personally, i HATE victoria's secret bras....they creak. i don't know if i'm the only one who has noticed this. the underwire creaks when someone hugs you, or if you move a certain way. they are very annoying.

i guess i'm boring, because i don't like lace bras. i'm not a fan of lace...it itches. my bras are usually slightly padded, only to hide the unsightly T.H.O. and they are cotton, but something else so that they are very smooth and soft.

black bras make me feel sexy, no matter what, and when you match black underwear and a black bra, you're feeling good under your clothes......which brings me to an interesting topic..........underwear

I LOVE UNDERWEAR

I KNOW THIS CREAKING!!! No creaking should be coming from that area- that's just my opinion of course. I think it's just the Body By Victoria one's that do it. I did buy a red bra from Vickie's Secret not long ago that when I wear it my alter ego comes out....with the help of a margarita or two! It has the prettiest tiny straps w/ silver buckle adjusters...*sigh* I love that bra! Wouldn't you know that I went back to get more and the min. I showed the bra helper chic...she said, "oh yeah, that one...we don't carry that anymore." They discontinued the hottest bra weeks after I purchased one. So I can't point you in the right direction or anything...but you can be jealous of mine! biggrin.gif

Yadadada only wishes he could wear bras; I actually wear them.

I have had the whole escaping underwire thing happen before, and it hurts like hell. However, the bra was not a VS bra; it was a Ralph Lauren one that was very expensive. I was pissed when it broke after only a few washings.

Other then my sucky VS bra, I usually try to get bras without underwire (actually I just realized my favorite bra is from Body by Victoria.. so maybe they dont ALL suck). I mean, I don't really need underwire so its silly to be uncomfortable when I don't have to be. Maybe I'm just a minimalist (by the way I can NOT pronounce this word).

There are certain preparations to be made in the event you'll be dealing with a drunk Sina. Like that, hiding all the nice wineglasses to be shattered, not leaving half-full beer bottles around to be knocked over (or drunk), and not leaving favorite shirts around to be put on.

BTW I hate bras but I find them necessary for comfort most days. Another reason I preferred living in the NW: you usually had on enough clothes to not have to wear a bra.

yeah, if bras didn't do such a good job of helping you stay up, i would never wear them. i think they are very uncomfortable most of the day. first thing i do when i get home is put on pajamas and get rid of it, but i do have a theory that the more i walk around without my bra on, then the better chance i have of getting saggy boobs far before my time, and that unpleasant thought will keep my bra on more than i desire....

The free-for-all with meandering threads, particularly in the Misc. section, is a teeny tiny complaint I have about this board: it mainly makes it hard to find certain discussions when they are not under a labelled topic.
