Am I the only one not glad to be having people banned? I understand that this message board is not a democracy, but it seems to me that most of the conflicts with the annoying post-ers had been resolved through thoughtful discussion. To think that that dialogue would not have taken place if BrianW had been paying closer attention & taken action earlier & to think that people would apparently be happy about that makes me sad. Are we so convinced of our own correctness and, as blightman said, do we take ourselves so seriously that we can't tolerate a little bit of banter? Are people only welcome on this board if they make positive statements that jive with everyone else's opinions? Will blightman be banned now because he's expressed anger at being falsely accused?
A message board of constant positivity and quick squashing of dissident opinions or criticism would be a boring place. My interest in these forums (and others' interest, judging by the activity this week) has only been increased by having assholes to debate with. I think it will go away entirely if criticism, or even just being an asshole, becomes "illegal".
Lauren, you aren't the only person who's not glad people were banned. I'm not happy that I had to! But you know what I don't get? What it is in someone that makes them happy, or as it seems to be, makes them any less bored by posting bullshit like that on message boards.
It's one thing to say, and I've been waiting to see someone to do it, believe me, "that the Features sucked tonight." Or, "you know I don't like that new song." I won't ban that. You or anybody else has the right to have criticism against the band. And as we've seen I have not put a stop to criticism of other musicians (I think Ryan Adams and a good handful of opening bands have seen the brunt of some folks here).
But if you say, "You know So-and-So in the band looks like he'd suck some good cock" and say it repeatedly, then I'd say this is exactly why you have a moderator/administrator for, to limit such things. I was slow to respond, but it doesn't make it right for it to be there in the first place.
And you know, I'll talk to the management and the band about this. If they want this place to be a free for all where any and everybody can just say whatever the hell they want to, meaning, as vulgar as they want to be, then I'll stand by their wishes and allow that to happen.
