OK...

Led Zeppelin (original 4 disc box set)

I would not be overstating things to say that I listened to ONLY this for about 6 months to a year of my life when I was 15-16 years old; this box set changed my life. This box set and its later-released 2 disc companion box set (6 discs in all) combine to give you everything Led Zeppelin ever released, plus about 10 previously unreleased tracks. These two items are the only Zep I have ever owned (no albums). Though I rarely listen to Led Zeppelin any more, whenever I put on any disc of that 4-disc set, it still sounds great.

Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

The Police--Message in a Box -- I forked out about $75 for this one when I was in high school. I got it at "Waves" in the Green Hills Mall.

Blur--10 Yr Singles Box -- I won't mention how much I paid for this one, but it was definitely a worthwhile investment (and a birthday present for exliontamer).

speaking of exliontamer, i'll make an honorary reply for him since he's MIA:
Joy Division--Heart & Soul

This box set is the only reason I decided to read this topic- ditto to what Jamie said, except I was 13. It never loses its charm. It inspired me to make my first film- a music video for "Stairway to Heaven", which was quickly followed by one for "Maxwell's Silver Hammer". It also inspired me to start listening to records because my friend's dad had Houses of the Holy on vinyl.

Wow! You made a 'Stairway to Heaven' music video? How did you you do that? What was it like? It had to have been better than the music video-type stuff that was on 'The Song Remains the Same' (Robert Plant riding horses, children bathing in streams, medieval ceremonies, etc).

Aforementioned REM Automatic Box, though it could stand to be a bit longer.

yeah, the song remains the same is pretty bad at times.

the only boxed sets i have ever bothered to buy were from these bands:

lynyrd skynyrd
led zeppelin
jethro tull

read into that what you will...
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

Funny thing is, it's thematically similar to The Song Remains the Same (silly medieval/goth) although I didn't see that video until I was about 16. It involved (1) my best friend lying "naked" & "dead" under a sheet on a raft in a pond with candles burning around her and (2) a flashback to when she was strolling along the pond's bank and fell in- which we re-enacted by her "falling" from a bulkhead onto the shore below & my little brother simultaneously tossing a bucket of water up to simulate a splash. I think that got us about 3 minutes into the song & I think we never finished it. I guess the gist was that she was the "lady" and she died & that was sad. The funniest part is that we didn't knwo how to overlay audio, so we would have to start & stop the tape deck & rewind for every take.
