What was your first job?

I've yet to get a job but this week I've been filling out applications like crazy. The ones that I hope I get to work at most are Borders or drive in Hooters aka Sonic. Wish me luck..

Good luck. At least you don't live in Murfreesboro a.k.a "Land of the Businesses That Just Finished Hiring." Wal-Mart isn't even hiring, and Wal-Mart is always looking for fresh cattle to suck the life out of (oh how I wish I could be one of the cattle!!). I'm getting so desperate...I may have to go to SuperPetz...

i was a cashier at this stupid store called haley's outlet. it was really dumb. they sold random things like ceramic indians, nascar merchandise, and wicker furniture, all in the same store. needless to say, they are now out of business.

i need a job right now in the worst way. i have to save money for the white stripes road trip to NC and a down payment for moving out in a few months. i've even applied at wal-mart. no one seems to be hiring. i've considered dealing in the jazz cigarettes (if you know what i mean)...anyone know where i can get started?

I need to get a job this summer, gas and doing stuff with friends is a butthole and a half to pay for, so I might do pressure washing, or try to work at Chambers music or any other music store.

you might want to try a church day care. i worked at one when i was 15. i didn't even belong to that church, so all the other day care workers ignored me. it was a win-win situation.

I have worked in sooo many places since I hit the job market 10 years ago*.

When I was 14, I worked door-to-door selling newspaper subscriptions.
15/16 - machine shop
17 - busboy
18 - factory
and so on and so on.

*This is the first time I've ever said "ten years ago" in reference to something in my own life. I now feel a little older.

It's tough to get a job when you are young, but it really helps if you have a friend or family member to get you "in" somewhere you wouldn't normally be hired (that's not nepotism, is it?). That's how I got my first summer job at 14. I worked as the "gopher" at a pediatrician's office and returned to work there for 5 more summers, well into college. It was a great gig. I especially loved sticking the thermometers up babies' butts. wink.gif

Have you tried Kroger? I know they will hire 15 yr. olds.

My first, and so far only, job was at a law office making minimum wage even though I worked my butt off. We would have redneck clients call from jail wanting my boss to get them out, and they would yell at me about it...like I could do something about it...I'm not an attorney. rolleyes.gif mad.gif They would all acuse me of not giving him his messages, too. Then there were the white trash guys who would come in and look me up and down and try to hit on me everytime they came in. However, I did get to hear all of the juicy news about people I went to highschool with being arrested and everything. Nonetheless, I hated that place so much and have vowed to never work for another attorney.

I'm currently looking for a job for the summer, and once I go back to school, I'll have to find another one in Murfreesboro. I'm dreading it, and I'm sure I won't find anything.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

I agree with Token that it helps to know someone to get your first job. I ended up working for my dad the day after I turned 16. After that I have had many dreadful jobs such as repairing watches in Hickory Hollow Mall, bathing angry farrets at Superpetz, and Wal-mart. I can not begin to explain how much I hated this job. Today I am off to start a new shitty job at Garden Ridge. Lots of old ladies talking about crafts. Maybe it won't be so bad....

Good luck to the rest of you on the job hunt. smile.gif

damon, ive tried many ice cream places, tj maxx, sonic, david lipscomb student center (college boys), alpine bagel, and various stores in the mall.

smee, im not a fan of the kids so i dont think im gonna go that route.

token, kroger/hghills are my last resorts. i know i shouldnt be picky but whatever.. having a job isnt completley nessicary right now so id rather be laying out then sacrificing a good tan doing something thats no fun.

I agree. I worked in a coffee shop in a mall [I know, kind of contradictory to the whole spirit, isn't it?] and it sucked. and it was really really dirty. I wouldn't order stuff from the Coffee Beanery in Louisville. God knows how long the milk has been sitting there. but mall's suck in general. there was more bitching and little high school girls [no offense, rachel] complaining about work than when I worked at Target.

Grades are finished, and I have two and a half days left.
I haven't decided whether or not I'll seek employment this summer. If I do, it will be just to do it. I have in-services, a wedding, a honeymoon, and a few mini-vacations. With all that, I'm not sure if it's worth the bother.

My advantage is that I can walk into a job at Cool Springs Mall at Brookstone.

i worked at a boy scout camp (kia kima) during the summer time teaching merit badges nd what not. that was for 6 weeks every summer for 5 years. during the regular time of year i work at blockbuster. i've been with blockbuster since i was 17. i've been a manager for almost 2 years now and i hope i don't end up working there for the rest of my life. i've been quite lucky being able to keep that job for the last 4 years.

i've done alot of odd jobs as well. i was a cook at pizza hut for 2 months.

no matter how horrible your job is or was.....you could be the guy who mops the floor at a porno theatre. try to look on the bright side.

I just started a new job. Not only am I afraid that I'll not be able to go to Atlanta anymore to see The White Stripes, but I'm even more afraid that The Features will come back and do a show, and I will not be able to go since I've been closing the store.

In a way, I think I would rather have no money. I have no life now. Work is not cool, and I have to start summer school soon. Then, I'll be busy from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm (every day except Sunday)...then I'll have to do homework.

Sorry, I know none of you care, but I wanted to share my worries.

How does closing the store at 9:30pm keep you from seeing a Features show? Other than DitD and Uptown Mix, when was the last time they played that early? Plus, if they play on a Saturday night, you can sleep in and do your homework later.

yeah, I would rather get less pay and get to work good hours. After actually having a decent year in Murfreesboro and actually having a life, it's hard not seeing anybody other than family members for weeks at a time.

I haven't even been able to see Ray Davies except for like fifteen minutes in the past week, and he lives about five minutes away from me.

Because I live over an hour away from Murfreesboro or anywhere else The Features would play. Plus I would rather not wear my work clothes to a Features show, but would if I have to. It would just not work out good time wise.

Yeah, I'm sort of in a dilemma now. I've job-hunted for forever, and now it's that time where you have to start calling the places, and start pestering them about the application you turned in 4 weeks ago. I LOATHE that. I hate it b/c no one wants to hire people just for the summer. I began to think about how awful it would be to be some of those people that work in stores who are like 50, and work there everyday. It makes me want to cry.

That reminds me of my first job at a college during the summer where I worked in the kitchen to serve food for all the kiddie conferences they held. Man, that sucked. Not only did it make me lose my appetite at the time (turkey covered in a large gelatinous membrane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), but it instilled in me a distrust for any kind of prepared food that I would buy/be served ever again. The people I worked with were so unbelievably redneck. They were like 60 year-old men who thought arranging a salad bar was rocket science, and freaked out when it wasn't done the way he had been doing it for the past 15 years.

I hate jobs....
Why would you do that?

I've even been applying at places were people I know work there and they might be able to help me get on but nooo it's not working.. I'm almost dirt poor. I'm like almost "back to the eight grade poor" laugh.gif But I'm still on the hunt.. hell I'm a good worker why can't employers see that???

Sadie, I wouldn't worry too much. It looks like this summer might be like the last few and be a dry spell for Features shows. There are several options, though-- get off work early on those nights, change clothes at work (I've done that before), get there late for a show (I know the desire to get there early, but you in Murf, you could still feasibly be getting there as the opener is starting at 10:30).

I had an 'interview' of sorts at Kroger's the other day. I'm sure I botched that one, so I'm still looking. I drive around and look for places to apply, and I really cannot think of any place (other than restaurants) that I have not applied for and then called back...this is ridiculous. Now I also have all the high school mongrels (no offense to any on this board, if you are in high school and posting here, you are no where near mongrel level) are gobbling up all my positions....

It's so funny that you should mention that, FFF, because lots of my friends, including our very own mike_D, used to work there in high school. I waited tables at the Blakeford, across Hillsboro Rd from the St. Paul, when I was 18-19.

My first job was a movie theater, specifically O'Neil Watson Glen Cinema 10 in Franklin (yes, the $1.25 theater). I was 16. I started out making minimum wage ($4.25/hour at the time). I swept floors and took out trash. Then I got promoted to concessions, then to the box office, then to projection. For the record, being a projectionist was the coolest job I have ever had. But even as a projectionist, I only made $4.75/hour. So I eventually had to quit.

Other places I have worked:

-Krystal (1 day)
-Sun Trust Bank (teller)
-HCA (software tech support)
-Belmont Bi-Rite (misc)

Now I work at a hospital, which is where I sit right now, having fun on the internet between reviewing people's background checks and drug screen results.

Actually my first job was a summer program job. They placed me with this old senile ady who wanted us to gather information for her about black history in Gallatin, TN. There were 4 of us working for her. The first day I go there she tells us to wait there on the porch uhh it was June sittting on the porch! One 2 words hot and sweaty. She came back with 2 boxes full of newspapers and some scissors... At first we were all about business until the second week when we realized that she was senile and she threw away the box of clippings that we had found.. then she asked us to start cleaning her house for her.. which had water bugs and smelled like moth balls... she washed her dishes with COMET u guys remember the powdery stuff that came in a green can? Do they still make that now? lol who uses it.. Anyway it was basically free money all we had to do was be able to stand sitting on her porch or under her shade trees in the yard for 2 months in the summer heat.. she also cursed us out a few times... Weird I know..

My dad always said, "Get a job, you lazy good-for-nothing bum!" Okay, not really, but he did make me buy my own car early when I was 15 1/2 so my brother could use it for a few months until he got his next car and I was old enough to drive. I also has to pay for gas and insurance, unlike most of my other spoiled friends. It's made me what I am today for better or (mostly) worse.

Good for you. I think you should wait until at least next year to get a job. It sucks to work in the summer because it is so hot and you just want to be outside by a pool or in a cool, dark air-conditioned place sleeping or watching tv. I like going to the movies during the day in the summer because it's such a contrast to the unbearable heat.

I went to Linens and Things in Cool Springs today to get some stuff, and they had a "Now Hiring" sign out. Just thought I'd throw that out there for any of you in the area who are still looking for a job.

It didn't pay well but I loved get in conversation with other movie junkies, and being able to tell people the names of movies by hearing the actors names and the plot etc. It was easy adn enjoyable work man!

I went to Linens and Things in Cool Springs today to get some stuff, and they had a "Now Hiring" sign out.  Just thought I'd throw that out there for any of you in the area who are still looking for a job.
There was also one at Hollywood Video in Franklin.
maybe they run their stores differently in TN, but my bff wroked at hollywood video in jackson, MS and HATED it. it was seriously terrible.
thank you for being a friend.

You could always work at Quizno's. Expensive, parking space occupying bastards. They have infiltrated the UPS Store's parking and I harbor bad feelings about it. They put a restaurant in a place that only has two designated parking spots. The codes inspectors in Gallatin are brilliant!

Your parents probably have professional associates (co-workers, clients, etc.) that could use your services. Make sure that they are part of your marketing mix.

speaking of child care....i just finished my second day at a local daycare. it's not very easy. sometimes it's fun, but sometimes it's really really not. i'm what they call a "floater" so i get to work in a different class everyay. the first day was with one year olds. man, that sucked. today was with four year olds. man, that sucked less. i'm hoping to have lots of funny stories from this job. another bonus is the sweet hours. but the pay sucks to the maximum. i'm hoping to pick up a second job at wal-mart (so the suck may take over my life). but, hey, it's only for the summer (well, the wal-mart suck at least).

They have babysitting gigs in the classifieds in the news paper most of the time.. I saw a few of them.. some of them are on a nightly basis but most of them are for people who can be basically nannies and live at the house but it's worth a look.

I was wondering about that store that's being built beside the walmart in gallatin? I can't remember the name of it, I hope they hire for that soon, the building is done basically on the outside I guess they are just doing the inside.. I would think it would be open before July.. If so I'd be would definitely be down for working in a store!

Oh yes, oh yes...chillin with my old men business buddies, while smoking and gawking at hot babes that I used to go to school with, it's just what Gallatin has been missing.

I have heard that it's going where Buffalo's, Donatello's and numerous other failed restaurants have been located. Is this true?

One of my best friends in high school became a Hooters girl; she even made it to management, though I'm not sure what that really says. The sad thing was is that she was very smart, and I have a feeling that Hooters didn't exactly, uh, challenge her intellect much.

This sounds like a B-rate Ray Davies job. The street dept. guys in Gallatin are really cool. Of course, they have to do the annoying shit, like patching roads and putting banners up on the square for different seasons, but they also get to drive the cool trucks and smoke cigarettes all of the time. Invariably, most of them come to the tobacco store and buy 3 packs a day with a 12 pack of beer. I have noticed two divisions amongst these workers. The poor ones buy Natural Ice or Light and USA Golds, while the richer ones get Bud Light and Marlboros. My favorites lie in-between. They get Busch and Dorals or Montclairs. There you have the Upper, Lower, and Middles classes of the Gallatin Streets Dept. Which will you be Damon?

What?! That's retarded! Camels are $2.65 and Dorals are $2.25, both after tax. Both are made by RJ Reynolds and Doral is intended to be their mid-tier brand, while Camel is in their top-tier (better, more expensive). This has blown my mind.

yes, I agree. I've always understood Dorals to be mid-tier as well, but on my way to Waffle House one sunny afternoon, I went to a particular Thornton's here that priced them at 3.25 while the Camels were 2.75. It's also a matter of fact that I've been quoted the same price for both brands at certain gas stations. However, this could be the fault of inept attendants.

It could also depend on the owner of the store. Certain, ahem, business owners don't exactly do things by the book here. They tend to be the owners of "Taliban Markets", as we call them (most of them, but not all). Their business ethics offend me.

Savor the excitement. Carmike is the worst employer on the face of the earth. Prepare yourself for the following:

Lots of young thugs and skanks
Low pay
Shitty hours
VERY rude customers
If you're a concessionist, having to ask every customer if they want to try a combo, or you're fired
Never being able to eat popcorn again (trust me)
Working for and working with complete idiots.

I'll think of more later.

Hmm...I'm fine with low pay, I have nothing else to do this summer so the hours will be okay, and I have much thug/skank experience (I went to school in Smyrna).

The thing that bothers me is the combo asking. I just keep thinking of the scene in Ghost World where she quits because she thinks that it's stupid to force larges on everyone. I feel the same way. But I will suck it up.

I need money.

I have been hired by Wynnsong 16 theater in Murfreesboro. I am not completely undesirable! I get to wear a sexy vest/tie combo! I rule!
Savor the excitement. Carmike is the worst employer on the face of the earth. Prepare yourself for the following:

Lots of young thugs and skanks
Low pay
Shitty hours
VERY rude customers
If you're a concessionist, having to ask every customer if they want to try a combo, or you're fired

actually, an exboyfriend of mine and a couple other friends used to work at thoroughbred when we were in high school. they always got me free tickets, and to dispute your popcorn claim, gave me a huge garbage bag full of popcorn for my movie once. and they used to smoke in the employee thing next to the concession stand and never got caught or fired. its a sucky job because if you do work, you work pretty late, but if youre not in high school, i cant see that being a big problem. and you get to see lots of movies.

Jobs are pretty much what you make of it. I refuse to work at any of my "favorite" establishments for fear that being behind the desk may ruin it for me. I worked at Denny's one weekend a couple years ago. I was a host. After the second hour of work on Sunday, I left and didn't go back. It was horrid. Of course, the job was in Southern Indiana, too... But more to the point, I've always wanted to work in an arcade, pizza shop, record store or movie theatre. They're the kinds of jobs that the characters in brat pack movies would have had. They leave a warm spot in my heart, because all the suckiness even adds up to good stories and the feeling that you had the quintessential american teen/young adult lifestyle.

For 1.5 years, I worked at a movie theater. It was not a Carmike theater, but it was a corporate-owned multi-plex. I loved it. I saw an unbelievable number of movies for free, I got free fountain drinks/popcorn while watching said movies, and I got lots and lots of free movie posters. I did get sick of popcorn while I was working concessions, but I got over that.

Digsy, I don't know what exactly you'll be doing at the theater, but at all costs, try to avoid having to clean the popcorn popper. That is some of the nastiest work I have ever had to do.

As far as hours go, I think that maybe if you establish yourself as a good worker who takes care of business, they will be more apt to schedule you instead of all of the slackers that work there.

I didn't know what I was talking about Digsy. I'm sure you'll love the job if you're able to get past some of the negatives. I mean, I never even worked for Carmike, I worked for a locally owned company (that is now defunct) that owned/operated 2 theatres. However I can think of 10 friends off the top of my head that have worked for Carmike, Wynnsong included, and the horror stories are abundant.

I would be afraid to eat garbage bags full of popcorn from Carmike. I know the standard policy used to be: bag up the popcorn at the end of the night, throw it in the back, and potentially use it a couple weeks later.

Unfortunately, friends, this is true. At my theater, we would bag up the leftover popcorn at the end of the night (and there would always be leftover). The next day, at opening, that popcorn would be dumped back in, and whatever new popcorn that was popped that day was just added onto the top. This process was repeated every day. I had a theory that there could literally be popcorn in there that was months, even years old, because the popcorn that is on the bottom is the old popcorn. So the same popcorn is essentially being re-bagged every night. Scary.

Then, of course, you have people that chew or dip as opposed to smoking. Upper = Copenhagen, Skoal, Red Man, Levi Garrett; Middle = Kodiak, Wolf, Morgan's, Southern Pride; Lower = Silver Creek, Grizzly, Red Seal, Durango. I just thought that I would let you know in case you're looking for a tobacco alternative to smoking; though, I don't personally suggest dipping or chewing, because it's nappy. However, if you do decide to chew at any point in your life, the coolest type, by far, is called twist tobacco. They are all made locally. King Bee (from Gallatin), Mammoth Cave and Warren County are the primary brands. They give wicked buzzes. Class dismissed.

We sold the twists at the store where I used to work - and the same brands. I never saw anyone under 75 buy them.

ive had friends who have had really good experiences with movie theater jobs. my ex boyfriend works at one in portland and tears the tickets for the ladies in sleater kinney once a month. smile.gif

waiting tables can be so terrible . . .
last night the computer LOST a party of 15's check. gone. so i had to rethink what they all had to drink and eat, etc. (btw they all wanted separate checks) but i had to do it all by hand and add the tax in . . .
anyway, this guy was so pissed at me for taking so long with the checks that he got three inches from my face screaming so loudly everyone in the restaraunt could hear him and of course i got zero tip on about $150 of the check.
it was terrible.
thank you for being a friend.

The poor ones buy Natural Ice or Light and USA Golds, while the richer ones get Bud Light and Marlboros.  My favorites lie in-between.  They get Busch and Dorals or Montclairs.
That's interesting since sometimes Dorals prices go up above Camels...
However, this could be the fault of inept attendants.
a friend of mine smokes dorals and she pays like 1.95 for them in some places. cigarettes haven't been that cheap since like 1985!
thank you for being a friend.

right at the end of the school year we hired a 17 year old who seemed like she had it together for her age. she goes to hillsboro, too. anyway she did pretty well at first. she was working to pay for a trip to france where she happens to be from. that turned into moaning and groaning about how much greater france was than america, which got on everyone's nerves. then she started calling out for retarded reasons and not showing up for her shifts because she forgot she had to work. she even called me coughing trying to get out of coming to work on a day she wasn't scheduled to work. lastnight was her last night here. now my employees are bitching about how i should never hire another kid and the one straight guy (who's a republican) is bitching about how i should never hire another french person or another kid.

it must suck for you to get a bad rap because people hire kids that end up not doing their jobs.

I am serious. But, it did happen about 10 years ago and I'm sure its a rare occurance and not one limited to that specific establishment. Luckily, no one was hurt (just a little chilly). The point is: be alert around the register and be prepared so you can be calm if it ever happens-- which, hopefully it won't.

As far as the village location-- I seriously doubt its safer and I'll bet you would have a lot more competition with getting a job there.

Savor the excitement. Carmike is the worst employer on the face of the earth. Prepare yourself for the following:

Lots of young thugs and skanks

If you're a concessionist, having to ask every customer if they want to try a combo, or you're fired
Never being able to eat popcorn again (trust me)
Working for and working with complete idiots.

I'll think of more later.
Well, Ceeze, you were mostly right. There were lots of young thugs and skanks, a couple of whom I worked with and DEFINITELY for. Low pay ruled my existence. I made $5.40 the whole time and, in the last month, new people were hired in at $5.50, making more than me and I was management. The hours were either way too little or way too much. The last couple months I worked way too much and it drove me insane. The rude customers, of course. The combo thing never bothered me at all. I didn't work alongside many idiots; I enjoyed 90% of my co-workers. However, my management team was, by the time I quit, the biggest assortment of cock-sucking dirty slut bitches and ass-kissing idiotic sadists.

All I can say is...I got two amazing seasons of a sitcom out of all this.

Wow. I hope you don't look back at Jersey Mike as the "on again, off again" boyfriend of your high school days.

Digsy, was there a particular straw that broke the camel's back that you didn't mention? I for one am glad you've moved on.

Many straws, actually. I demoted myself from management to supervisor so that I wouldn't have to be in direct contact with my general manager (I hate her). Still, on Thursday night she refused to give us our paychecks because her name plate on her door was missing. It was then that I realized that the immaturity and third-grade drama was going to get me no matter where I was in the building.

Let me know if you'll be working the lunch shift during your Christmas break. If you are, I'll come by.
