TOPIC: Fixations
Posted  Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at 8:10 PM
Post 1 of 91
Am I the only one suffering from a fixation here? Among some of the crap Freud came up with, fixations are the things I can come closest to believing. Why, you ask? Well, I have a serious oral fixation. I bite my nails, used to chew my hair and everything else (including pencils, erasers, etc.) when I was little, bite my lips frequently, and as anyone who has met me can tell you...I talk a LOT. The only thing I don't do is smoke, and I'm allergic to that. Now, do I think that I didn't complete the oral phase of maturation? Hell, I don't know. What I do know is that my fixation is almost uncontrollable. I've tried to stop biting my nails several times, only to fail.

So, someone needs to tell me that they suffer from this fixation or another one to make me feel better. Discuss.

What are some other common ones? I'm not familiar with any other than oral fixations.

I always always pick at things, if that counts. I have no erasers on any of my pencils.

i do this weird little "whip" motion with my head to part my hair. funny thing is, my hair is like a quarter of an inch long because i just got a haircut. In fact, my hair hasn't been long in monthes, but I still do it. I don't know if its a fixation, but I look like I'm having a siezure constantly.

I check to make sure that I have my wallet, cell phone, and keys constantly. I mean constantly. During concerts, while I'm seated in class, during movies, while I'm driving (I sometimes panic because I can't find my keys...I'm dumb)...geez...

I also second guess myself when it comes to money, in terms of if I counted correctly. Being a cashier, this does not help.

that reminds me. when i go to a movie, i constantly check my cell phone to make sure it isn't on. i'll turn it on silent, turn the phone off, and remove the battery, but i still check.

I'm glad to hear that other people are crazy about their phones being off or on silent too. I check mine constantly in class and in movies, too. I also have to do things equally. Like if I wink one eye, I have to wink the other. Everything has to be symmetrical.

I have a fixation on the cruise control in my car. I want it on all of the time. Not only do I use it as often as I can on the interstate, I use it as often as I can on secondary and tertiary roads. Even if I know I will have to stop in a quarter of a mile, I will set the cruise for 45 for that quarter mile. The other day I went through a school zone and set my cruise for 15.

It's a recent obsession.

I do what I call "visually triangulate" everything. It comes and goes in waves, but I just started it again. I'll look at an object, say a building to be easy and start visually drawing triangles using existing shapes in the structure. Sometimes in throws of this fits I see the world like a wire frame...

Growing up, we used to have fun playing with that. My favorite was to set it on 65, and then come to a complete stop. Then we'd hit the "resume" button and let the car accelerate to 65 with all of its might.

Ray Davies bites his nails.

I fidget a lot when I walk, so I always put my hands in my pockets so that I won't do it as much. So, if I don't have pockets, I don't know what to do with my hands, and I end up fidgeting.

And, I guess you could call my tendency to check my alarm before I go to bed a fixation. I used to be a lot worse about it. I have a little routine where I say aloud what time it is and what time it is set for while checking the various buttons simultaneously (such as "11:34 pm, alarm, 7:10 am, alarm")...that's pretty sad. Plus, my alarm is set 13 minutes fast right now. The amount of minutes it is set ahead varies, but usually it's around 10 minutes ahead. I used to go as far as to set it 45 minutes ahead. rolleyes.gif

I check the time at least twice before I turn the lights out.

I also set two alarms, one on my clock and one on my phone...
I'm down to two alarm clocks now, one plugged in and one battery-powered. At one point a couple of years ago, I was setting four alarm clocks every night, scattered all over my room. I set the alarms about 5 minutes apart, so if I slept through one (or two, or three) I would still have a chance. Yes, I am that heavy of a sleeper. I've gotten better, though. It's all about getting enough sleep.

As obsessed as I am about efficiency and organization, I hate to clean.

I have two alarm clocks, mainly because my primary one is on my TV set (of course). If the power goes out in the night, like it often does where I live, I get screwed. I have my alarm clock set as a back up.

Same here. For me, I think it comes from living in a speed trap.

I have small obsessions with numbers. I am constantly adding up numbers I see. I memorize interstate exit numbers everywhere I go so that I know how many miles it is to my destination at all times. (Everywhere but downtown anyway.) Whoever invented milemarkers was a genius.
I inspect every bite of food before I eat it.

I have strange highway habits as well. Everytime I am driving somewhere far away, I am constantly doing the math of exactly how much longer it will take. If I see a sign that say 140 miles to Knoxville and we are going 70mph, I will do the math in my head and look at the clock to see when we'll arrive. I make adjustments at every such sign.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

I have that hang up as well... but my obsession with Formula Racing has taken it a step further. I now plan trips based on pit stop strategies. That is where you gain and lose horrific amounts of time. I can now drive back to my home in Iowa in about seven hours (used to take about 8) using a "one stop strategy". We make one stop, gas, eat, pee and give the dog a stretch. I will proudly announce in the car that we have reached our "pit window" and its now up to the Director Sportif (my wife) to make the pit call. We have gotten into serious arguments over waiting 15 minutes so I can make my pit window in order to stop and eat. Nothing pisses me off more than having to stop within 30 miles of my destination to get gas.

I also use ellipses way to much...

of the recently mentioned, I too am obsessive about:

- multiple alarm clocks. checking them. putting them in 5 minute intervals since I am a deep sleeper. I set all of my clocks 20 minutes fast.

- doing the mathematics of how long it will take to get somewhere when I am driving. and using pit-style quickness/efficiency to get gas and food. I also draft when possible (ha) and drive on the apron in turns.

- efficiency

- fidgeting

Amazing. I do this as well, though without the thing about fives. They have to be even numbers, always.
I also count the number of letters in words so that I can find the middle letter or the midpoint between the two middle letters.
I was a compulsive cleaner when I lived alone but if I compulsively clean now I find that I'm cleaning up after three other people, but mostly just Luke, because he's barely touched the dishes, trash or recycling in three and a half years.
I also set my alarm 30-45 minutes before I actually plan on getting up so that I can hit snooze for that period. I must be eased from my stupor.

I set two alarm clocks for an hour before i actually need to get up. I let my stereo play for that hour while I writhe around in bed, hitting the snooze on my cell phone alarm every ten minutes until I actually get out.

I bite my nails.

When riding shotgun, i have an odd ritual concerning the grass and pavement adjacent to the street that the car is riding along on. I've tried to explain this to some people, however, it's hard to say let alone understand. I've been doing it since I was a kid.

Also, I have to make a strained effort to actually step on cracks in the sidewalk.

And buttons and stickers freak me the hell out.

I seem to have the opposite fixation of many other people. I am fixated on not hearing an alarm clock. I hate alarm clocks. I'm a really light sleeper and usually wake up a few minutes before my alarm clock goes off. But rather than get the extra 5 minutes of sleep, I just turn it off and get up. I'm also staunchly opposed to the snooze button. Just turning it off and jumping out of bed is the only way to do it.

I'm also fixated on napkins. Whenever I go out to eat and there's napkin holders on the table, condiment bar, etc., I take a ton and just throw most of them away. I guess I'm just worried I'll make a huge mess. I'm a preemptive kind of person.

I'm also fixated on my day planner.

Agreed on every account. I thought that I was alone on this one.

I have an "internal alarm clock". I don't set the alarm but I still get up anywhere from an hour to five minutes before time. I misset the alarm on the morning of the ACT and still was up at 6 am on the dot. I just don't trust alarms.

My imaginary friend was chained to our car and always running alongside it.

As far as alarm clocks, I classically conditioned myself to get up when they go off. I will literally jump, panic, and my heart will start beating very quickly whenever one goes off. For that reason, I try to wake up before it goes off. It's a good thing Token wakes up to music. I never notice that.

I constantly check and re-check to make sure that I've locked doors. I'll always feel the need to double check anytime I walk away from the apartment door or from the car. Now we drive cars that beep the horn when we lock them, and the auditory helps assure me

I also count the number of letters in words so that I can find the middle letter or the midpoint between the two middle letters.
I do this as well.

I was a compulsive cleaner when I lived alone but if I compulsively clean now I find that I'm cleaning up after three other people, but mostly just Luke, because he's barely touched the dishes, trash or recycling in three and a half years.
I am still a compulsive cleaner, now that I live with Mitch and Powder P. I'm moreso compulsive about organization than keeping the apartment dusted, etc. Every dish has it's "spot", as does every piece of laundry. Towels are all folded in the exact same manner. I use a clean towel to dry off after a shower, hang it on the curtain as horizontally-proper as possible, with the back hanging down a little past the front. I reuse it the next day, after which it immediately goes into the washer for the next load of laundry.

Everything in my "world" (home, work, truck) has it's spot.

"Quote from neuboy on Mar. 10, 2004 at 3:47 PM"
When I was a kid I used to imagine someone on a motorcycle riding on the grass and sidewalk next to my parent's car.
I imagined myself with Flash-like superspeed, running alongside the car, dodging street signs, bushes, and cars that were next to us.

I used to pop my knuckles a lot more than I do now. If I popped one, I had to pop them all. If I popped a finger twice, I had to pop all of them twice. This could sometimes take a while, since some did not want to pop.

When I smoke a cigarette, I always smoke it as far down as I possibly can, which is to the filter. If I cannot finish a cigarette for one reason or another, I put it out and keep it in my pocket to finish at the next available opportunity.

I save Paul and Mitch's Camel Cash for them. Even after the pack has been thrown in the trash, I will salvage the cash.

My CDs and records are in alphabetical order. CDs face the proper direction in my CD case. They're never sideways.

I am obsessive about symmetry.

The TV video options are always 3/4 of the way full, all of them matching exactly. Except for Tint. It is always in the middle.

TVs, VCRs, and any sort of device with a clock has to have the time set. Power outages drive me insane. All of the times match.

When I finish a pack of cigarettes, the wrapper and foil from the next pack goes into the old pack and the old pack is then thrown away.

I really have a lot more of these.

I remember discussing this when you were in Chicago. I could not agree more with this one. Making the bed is vital. I'm so used to "turning down the bed" as part of the going-to-sleep process that sometimes I wonder if I'd even be able to sleep if I got in an unmade bed.

I am picky about the volume number as well. For me, my stereo has to be on 30 when I am by myself in my car no matter how loud the song is. Any lower than that and I feel like a wimp and any more than that I feel like a daredevil. If my ears start hurting/I think a song is too loud, I can explain it like "Man, it was on 32, what was I thinking?"

I am crazy paranoid about locked doors. I always lock the front door to my house (which is a dead bolt meaning that I have to shut it and then use the key to lock it) even if my parents are still in the house. For some reason I don't trust them to lock it.

I have set places on the TV where I like the volume to be set as well. In my bedroom it is right in the middle of the 'o' in volume and in my living area it is right at the edge of or one beyond the end of the word 'volume.'

I have to count every stair that I walk on to see how many there are.

I also do the adding up random numbers that I see. I also tend to associate any number between 94 and 360 with the issue of Uncanny X-Men of that number.

I also tend to force myself to learn from my mistakes. After accidentally wearing my sunglasses on campus (thank you IWE for the save), I now have to sit my glasses in my lap while I wear my sunglasses so I won't forget them. I also forgot my lunchbox at work one day so now I stick my cell phone and/or keys in it so I know I won't be able to leave the theater without it.

I constantly check to see how tall people are or if they are wearing wedding rings.

I sometimes have to check to make sure that I have my homework in my backpack while I'm driving to school.

I'm sure I'll come up with more because I am a freak.

I just remembered that I would rather wake up at a random time than an even time. For example, I woke up at 6:18 am every morning my senior year of high school and that's usually the time I aim for now.

I think I'm a nervous tick away from needing to seek therapy.

I definitely have an oral fixation as evidenced by my smoking, having used to bite my nails, gum chewing, candy sucking, lip licking, etc.

Ever since I learned to type I am constantly "airtyping" what I or other people say as it is being said. It is a weird obsession.

I often "airplay" the piano when I hear a piece of classical music, especially one that I know. I'm sure that players of all instruments probably do this, though.

I have other hand fixations too, like popping my knuckles, messing with my rings, etc.

Sometimes I fixate on my fixations, which is sad.

The only food that I allow to touch is Asian food and Mexican food. The rest of it just disgusts me. Like dipping cornbread in white beans? That is gross. Mixing corn with anything could make me vomit.

This also leads to the question of who mixes their play-dough colors. I never did because I knew that once I mixed them it would be hard to seperate them again. Of course I wasn't allowed to play with it because it was too messy, but when I did/do (yes "slash do") I refuse to mix them.

This is definitely the most outrageous one I've read here. Congratulations, Digsy.

Overall, though, I've been amazed at how many of these (especially RD's) I have read and thought, "Man, I didn't know anyone ELSE did that."

One more thing I want to touch on concerns food. Many people I know are getting more and more open-minded, or less and less picky about what they eat, as they get older. For me it's just the opposite. I seem to be getting pickier and pickier as time goes on. It's not a health-related thing at all. It's just that the list of things that I find appetizing is shrinking. Maybe it's just a phase.

These car/motorcycle/sidewalk/grass/asphalt fixations are both scary and fascinating. I had no idea people thought of such things.

I never imagined anything related to the car whilst riding in it. I was always drawn to think of things outside of it.

I rub my feet together before I go to sleep. I didn't realise I did this until I was 15, but I've probably been doing it all of my life. It just feels good.

I do the same kind of thing with grass and asphalt, only I do it with my teeth. When there's grass, I make sure my teeth are touching, but when it comes to asphalt, I make sure they're not. This is only when I'm a passenger and looking out the window.

I also save lots of crap, under the idea that I might need it someday. I have issues of teen magazines at my house from 1997 because I just might need that photo of Claire Danes or something.

Oh, and when I put coins in wrappers, I make sure they're all facing the same way.

I have always been freaked out when people rub/slide their feet along carpet. It doesn't really make a sound, but watching this event always sends a chill up my spine.

I think that was somewhat related to rubbing your feet together before sleeping.

Knuckles or ankles touching (whether they are my own or someone else's) has always given me chills. I also freak out anytime someone gets near my feet because I think they are going to pull my toes to pop them. This probably can be traced back to my childhood when my mom pulled my toes to pop them.

I always sleep with my hand around my neck.

I compulsively put salt and pepper on everything. If I'm eating some sort of dip, I'll salt & pepper it, then when that top layer has been eaten, I'll re-salt & pepper it.

When people are on all fours and their toes are bent in that weird position, or if I ever see someone's fingers in a weird position (even in movies), that part of my body gets really uneasy until I see that said digits have been moved back to normal. I can't just turn away, I have to actually see them go back to normal.

I think I'm taking this a little beyond fixations. I should probably stop.

I thought at first this was a bad idea to expose this on the MB...but I realized that most of the people here would not want to hang out with me regardless of wether I posted this or not...Plus, it is a strange fixation...almost funny...

Especially when green bean juice gets on breaded pork chops and the under side is all soggy. However, my father always freaked me out by mixing EVERYTHING together. Beans, corn, potatoes, bread, all of it would be in a heaping mess and he'd scoop it into his mouth. Ridiculous. I always walk to the beat of the song in my head. Sometimes this means I have to slow down or speed up the song or change the time signature in order to match my pace. I also count how many steps I take inbetween cracks on the sidewalk and layer this time signature with the one that is going on in my head. I do this all while simultaneously trying to avoid the cracks in the sidewalk, and it becomes very awkward to the point that I have to concentrate on not doing it.

Also, I just realized that whenever I scroll down a page, I have to leave the mouse pointer resting over words so that it shows the little "I" bar and not that wretched arrow.

Not a fixation per se, but I have a problem going to work if I havent read/drank coffee for at least an hour and half. I'm not sure if this is a function of my desire to relax before facing the public, or if it is just an addiction to caffeine. i'm having a hard time thinking of good ones, though i know i have a ton.

i do the two alarm clock thing. i'm also obsessed with snooze. once i hit snooze for 4 hours. and i'm also a heavy sleeper. and it doesn't help that i constantly incorporate the alarm sound into my dream (ambulance, school bell, telephone ring, etc), making it even harder for me to wake up.

and since work involves a lot of routines, i have a lot of weird things i have to do there. after i put a new diaper on a kid, they have to stand up and then i spin them around. i guess it's just to check to make sure the shirt isn't tucked into the diaper, but i do it even when i'm certain that it's not. at naptime, the kids have to have a blanket to lay on and a blanket to cover them up. if they wiggle the bottom blanket away while trying to get to sleep, i will risk waking them up to pick them up and readjust the bottom blanket. also, and this might be the weirdest one, when the barney tape is ending and the "i love you" song comes on, all the kids get up from where they're sitting and give hugs. i like to keep track of the hugs given and recieved, and make sure that each kids gets at least 4 hugs. i'd prefer if they hugs were from four different kids, but if the song is ending i accept same kid multiple hugs. anything to uphold the 4 hug minimum rule.

i have a pillow ritual. there's two fluffly pillows and one squishy pillow. at the beginning of the night, i start with all three stacked at an angle. then, when i'm almost asleep, i push one of the fluffy ones to the floor, leaving the squishy one on top.

also, when i hear the andy griffith theme song, no matter what i'm doing or how important it is or if i'm in another room, i get up and turn the channel as quickly as possibe. no exceptions.

Exactly!  Also, do you chew to the beat of music that is going on in your head?
I always walk to the beat of the song in my head. Sometimes this means I have to slow down or speed up the song or change the time signature in order to match my pace.
Ditto. If I need to get somewhere fast, I usually play "Oh My Love" or "The Beginning" in my head.

Here's another one:

I have a strong hatred of wet hair. I'm talking wet hair detatched from the head that winds up in the bathtub or sink. Before I take a shower I wash my feet under the faucet so I don't track any in from the floor. The left one must be first, then the right.

Wet hair is my enemy especially since the dirty Ray Davies lives with me. He's one hairy guy. ph34r.gif
Ugh. Wet hair makes me want to puke, seriously. This is a problem, because I am sure some of you have noticed how much hair I actually have. I have to look away whenever I clean out the bath tub drain after a shower. If I see the hair, I will gag. It wasn't a big deal until about 2 years ago. I don't know what my deal is.

Oh, and I am insane when it comes to learning new things. I expect to know just how to do everything that very moment, and I do whatever I can to prevent myself from messing up. So, getting this new job has taken it's toll on my patience with myself. Although I will say that I have had very few complications during my first days alone on the job, thank you very much. I also hate asking for help, whether it be in a store or with directions. I think I'm just a control freak.

Feet...womens feet...I do not have a fetish with them...but it is of the utmost importance that they (the feet) are not ganked up...if they are I can't even talk to a girl with out feeling odd...
I agree. I once dated a girl who's feet I didn't get a chance to see until a couple weeks into the relationship. She had hobbit feet. They were big and hairy and flat. Screw that.
I am so sorry for you...I made that mistake once and before I knew it I thought I had a fucking squirrel climbing up my leg whilst we were making out...There is NOTHING worse than a chick with dragon toes...

i constantly incorporate the alarm sound into my dream (ambulance, school bell, telephone ring, etc), making it even harder for me to wake up.
I hate when that happens! Have any of you ever dreamed that you were actually gettign up and getting ready to go to class, but you were still asleep. Then you woke up pissed at yourself.. and rushing like hell.

I freak out whenever I hear "The Nanny" opening song. Also, I will receive so much shit for this, but in Chattanooga, our radio stations are limited so I am constantly changing stations. I think every radio station in Chattanooga has an 80 times-a-day play request for Outkast's "Hey Ya" and now that song is driving me absolutely insane!!!
And here is a pet peeve that my 7th graders do. I'll say something like, "Okay guys, write down these vocabulary words because we are having a quiz on Friday", and it never fails that some child says, "REALLY!" I usually say, "No, I just said that for no reason." Kids are getting smarter and smarter (sarcasm). At least I have one or two that say, "yes, ma'm" if I ask them something. Notice I said, one or two.
And speaking of being a heavy sleeper, I slept through the earthquake last year. When I'm out, I'm out.

"My bed is pulling me, gravity..."
"Look at that lip. Gonna bite it."

ive been out of town. good topic. i like the ones that let me talk about myself.
i know i have plenty, but the biggest one i can think of is when im riding in a car on the interstate i feel the need for my top teeth to "jump" either the lines on the street or the light post thingies. i unclench my teeth when the car passes one and reclench.
my sheets have to be straight when i get in bed.
i have to have a bowl of ice cream every night at 11 pm [if im home].
i use the cruise control too liberally.
oh the drudgery of being wet
