TOPIC: Frank Black @ Exit/In, Wed. 3-19-03

Post 1 of 29
For those who are not aware...Frank Black and his Catholics will perform at the Exit/In on Wednesday, March 19 for only $16 (surcharge included). I am looking forward to this show a lot! My sister was kind enough to purchase me a ticket to it for my birthday. smile.gif Also, Mr. Ray Davies told me at the Apples In Stereo concert that he has reliable sources who have told him that Mr. Black has been playing four or five Pixies songs per show on this tour. I am sure many of us, Stalker On Skates included, are highly excited about this show. Thank the Lord that the Exit/In is back.

On a separate not, the Moldy Peaches played at The End exactly one year ago on that date. What an interesting show...

Four or five? That's not enough. How about this: get back together, Pixies.

i dont think that will happen after the way that he broke the news to the other members that the group was breaking up.......via fax. and besides, four or five pixies songs is better than none at all.......

It's highly unlikely that the Pixies would ever get back together. There is alot of animosity between Kim Deal and Frank Black and they have both been doing their own things about as long as they were with the Pixies. It would be awesome, but it's wishful thinking. The same with the Talking Heads. There was "talk" after the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction but it isn't very likely they will ever reunite either. Oh well.

Yeah, actually, I heard that Kim Deal has a restraining order that means Frank Black isn't allowed within 100 yards of her. It'd be tough to reunite under those circumstances.

I still think that the Pixies could be a great band today. They just had that something, you know? I haven't ever been very into Frank Black's non-Pixies work.

Well, actually, I think that the restraining order was in the past. But even today, I don't think they're exactly best friends.

My sources indicate that David Lovering will be opening for Black Francis. Anyone know anything about this fellow?

Just for the record, my previous post was not referring to Mr. Lovering. I'm not familiar with his work.

Before that, they both put a restraining order on me. They said I killed their cats or something.

As for Buffy, I thought the Breeders only did "Last Splash". Are they still around?

Their restraining order on me states that I can't own any of their CDs, and can't even half-way care about either of them or their current projects (even though Black Francis has connections to WATT).
I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party.

Yep. The Breeders are addicted to Buffy and are huge fans. They often play the theme song during their concerts actually. Buffy has been sporting some good music this year. One episode featured both The Shins and Coldplay.

The Breeders have a few albums out. Title TK, the latest, is probably their best in my opinion. I got it on vinyl the other day and I couldn't be happier.

So I was fortunate enough that the only decent show to come toJacksonville this quarter was Frank Black & the Catholics. I was really surprised by how good the show was- I kind of assumed he would just be sloppy & loud live. But everything sounded great & his band can play. And he did almost half Pixies songs: Where is my mind, Mr. Grieves, This monkey's going to heaven, Gouge Away, The Holiday Song, and more that I don't know the names of. He did 2 or 3 songs from his solo albums & the rest songs with the Catholics. I didn't realize they had kind of an Americana flavor, but it works.

David Lovering did indeed open, with a Mad Scientist/ Magic show. He made a pickle light up with an electrical current & blew smoke rings out of a rigged bass drum. Pretty cool.

holy shit! i had always heard that david dabbled in magic, but i didnt expect his magic act to be the opening act. this could be something quite spectacular.

At current count I think Frank Black did 5 Pixies songs. Did I miss anything else?

Where is my mind?
Crackity Jones
Mr. Grieves
Gouge Away
This Monkey's Gone to Heaven

I think they might have done a couple more but I'm not so certain. Quite a show, and the opening act was very unexpected.

Okay, I thought he had thrown Cactus in but wasn't sure as I hadn't heard it in a while. Wow. With such a strong showing of Pixies material, and a "semi-reunion" with the work for the "Pixies musical", you'd think a full reunion would be right around the corner. Maybe the bad blood has passed. We can always dream. Still, I think Lovering dodged the numerous questions about a Pixies reunion when he opened the floor. The questions pissed me off. Every damn one of them could be answered with the liner notes from the B-Sides album.
