so, what about education? yadadada? token? any warnings on that one?
also, what about native american studies?
Well, first, I loved being an English major. It made me far more interested in English than I even had been before (and obviously I already had a love of the subject which prompted me to choose that major in the first place.) I loved my upper English courses. I found most education classes, on the other hand, dull and unacademic. They were filled with the types of people who just can't wait to teach third grade, wear denim jumpers, and have apple decorations all over their classrooms. Ugh. Such classes did prove useful in the long-run, though.
Education, as a profession, has its ups and downs. Prepare to be underpaid* and to put up with more bullshit than you could ever have imagined. Get a job at a school that has an academic focus and a bunch of students who want to learn and respect you, and all of that is completely worth it. I just wish I could find that school.
Overall, I am finding my profession gratifying, but last year I did not. The majority of high school students in Metro public schools (and probably most districts around here) are bordering on illiterate.
Oh, and I can offer no advice on Native American studies.
*However, $29,000 as a starting salary is not that bad -- plenty to live on for me.
