I miss college. I've always felt like I belonged in a classroom. Yeah, I'm a dork, I know. I'm in grad school now, but instead of taking classes I "work" in a laboratory all day. It's just not the same. Beats the real world, though.

thanks, sos. i'm up for a venting break since i am right now writing a history paper. i hate my history class. there is endless busy work. but the worst thing is that with every reading assignment we get she highlights 100 or so words that we have to look up in the dictionary. that's right, vocabulary words in college. dry.gif digsy can attest to this since he has the same teacher. i'm so thankful this semester is almost over. i heart enlgish though. my teacher looks like dylan's dad (jack mckay) from 90210, you know, the one that got blown up by the car (or so everyone thought). digsy can attest to this as well.

I'm a BIG skipper. There hasn't been a week last semester or this semester that I have gone every day. Plus, I have this Philosophy teacher who is quite good, but he is the hardest grader I have ever had. EVERYTHING that you write in a paper is checked for plagiarism. A girl behind me today told me that she got accused of it, eventhough she said in the paper that Altman or Singer said it, she didn't put quotes around it. He just looked at her and said, "I could turn you in and get you kicked out of school right now". What an ass.
PLUS, I have finals coming up too. And, finals = no fun. 2 on mom's birthday and 2 on my brother's. So, at least I get to go out to eat after finals both nights. And, I am looking forward to that relief I always feel when it's over.

It is nice having an amigo in your Customs group so you can get classes together.

Our English teacher has a huge floor-to-ceiling painting of the Rolling Stones in his office...we talked Stones some...very odd (considering I have marginal knowledge). HaveSomeSoma and I have discussed making him a Features mix CD. History is hell too. I have to do a buttload of studying in that next week, as well as Understanding Mass Media (IWantElvis can attest to that).

I'm going to miss this semester. It was fun... sad.gif

MY HEAD IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE! I just took my Intro to media exam today... I'm so shaky about that class, he coveres 4 chapters per test, which is just to much information to cover!

My Art History teacher's mom died and she's just walking around like la...di...da... today is Wed.???

I'd be freaking torn apart if my mama passed.

I've got an English and a Spanish Exam coming up on Thursday and Friday blink.gif I'm so burnt out on school.

God, I hate school. I have a 10-15 page paper due next week which I have yet to start on...three exams...and a test this friday, too. It's freezing and wet outside, and I'm tired because I stayed up until 5:00 this morning studying for a test that I had to take at 9:00. All I want to do is go to sleep in my uncomfortable and squeaky dorm bed. Oh, and I have a bitch for a teacher in my pointless history class. Yeah, that basically sums it up. I hate school, I always have, and I'm pretty sure I always will. I remember hating school as far back as 2nd grade. It's quite a touchy subject for me. I think MAYBE 10% of the information I have learned in college will pertain to my life after I leave here. Of course, I'll be paying off loans for the next 40 years of my life too, I'm sure. I honestly do not feel like I've learned anything I didn't already know that's important or relevant to my life.

I always say to myself that years from now I'll be wishing that I were in college again and look at my college years as the good ol' days...but that doesn't help, I still hate it.

I had a 35 page paper on strategic management due last week, so everything from here on out is a cakewalk. Actually, I just have one exam tomorrow, and one on Friday and then I am done with school supposedly forever. I guess I'm excited, but this Real World thing is starting to frighten me a little.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

I definately miss the skipability of school, I wish I could skip work like I did classes. Otherwise, I like having money. after five broke years of school it's nice to get a paycheck twice a month. real world's not so bad. the same thing that sucks about a 9-5er is a plus too. You may have to work every morning earlier than you would like, but all nights and weekends are free. and for the most part, the stress level stays consistent, no all-nighters, yet.

LOANS I hate them so! mad.gif this shit should be free... considering all the pressure students go through during finals, hell the semester.

I used to be OK yep just OK with school, and when I graduated high school, I never thought about not going to college, I just did it and it felt natural. Now my will to continue is deteriorating as each semester passes. My study habits get worse, my paper writing skills get worse, I don't know if it's my teachers meticulous grading or is it just MY half-assing, but Grammar fucks me up everytime!

Grammar even fucks me up in spanish now blink.gif I've taken spanish since I was in the 9th grade and I've made A's up until THIS semester I have my first B in that subject... I was always good at that.... I'm falling apart, In English I have a C normally it's a B and I know my GPA will drop a few points now sad.gif I have to kick it up a knotch next semester, yeah... an I don't even PARTY HARD, I just need to devote time to studying an crap like that wink.gif

That's only if you handle your college days so that you can think of them that way. Take advantage of the general freedom that you have. Skip all the classes that you can get away with. make c's (unless you plan to go to grad school). party hard. Do things that you normally wouldn't. risk a little. make it worth remembering. Just don't get kicked out. Do all this and still take pride in what you do get accomplished, because college is hard. Don't kill yourself for grades. Like my dad always said, "work hard and play harder", especially during the time of your life when the actions out-weigh the consequences.

Hmmm. I've been on easy street all week. Before Thanksgiving I had to turn in:

-a 10 page paper on Herzog and Fassbinder's films
-a 5 page paper on Waiting for Godot
-a 9 page paper on the aesthetic of the first 30 min of Saving Private Ryan

Since then, I've been breathing easily, casually finishing up our short for my film production class.

Man, I really feel for you people.

I've had possibly the best first semester an entering freshman can have in college. I've had good teachers who are all nice and willing to go the extra mile to educate. They all know what they're doing and are reasonable. Out of a 17 hour schedule made up of 6 classes, I only have final exams in three of them, and they're all going to be easy. My final paper in english was a one page business letter of complaint (I wrote about how they discontinued Marie Callender chocolate cream pies at the grocery store). On top of that, the lowest grade on a paper I've made in English is a B, and that's the one he supposedly "hammered" us on. Math is easy, a simple review of high school. I'm only required to have one math class, and after tuesday it'll be over. As an architecture major, all I did all semester was draw stuff and build models out of balsa wood. People say that architecture is hard, but it just takes time. It was good because drawing and building stuff are two of my favorite things to do. I'm expecting all A's, save for maybe one B and I didn't have to bust my ass to get them, just pay attention and go to class. I'm really not that smart, I'm just lucky that I seemed to fall right into the best situation possible. I'm looking forward to exams, because they will signify the beginning of Christmas break, and I'll look forward to school starting again in January probably for the first time ever.

well i'm torn between "hootenanny", "let it be", and "tim" as my favorite. I guess i would give the slight edge to "let it be" since it does have "sixteen blue" on it and it doesnt have as many bob stinson guitar freak-outs as "tim" does....."pleased to meet me" is really good too. i guess i just love their twin tone era stuff better than their sire era stuff (not that their sire material is bad, i fucking love songs like "left of the dial', "skyway", "alex chilton", "swinging party", "i'll be you", etc.)......iwantelvis is also a very large mats fan as well.....

I only have one hardcore "math" class (calculus), but I will have architecture-specific math courses in the future, and they should be fun because they'll involve physics and applicable stuff.

As far as all-nighters go, I stayed up for 58 hours straight during the days before thanksgiving working on my final project. I stopped only to eat and to take 3 half-hour "power" naps on the couch in our studio. You know it's time for bed when you sit for five minutes at an intersection waiting for the stop sign to turn green.

My favorite 'mats song is Can't Hardly Wait, followed closely by (as expected) Left of the Dial. the problem with the mats is that they were always way too fucked up and generally didn't care all that much about making a great record top to bottom. But christ, when they were good, they were the best band in the world, Smiths and R.E.M. included. If I had to pick, I'd say Tim is my favorite record--its got the best lyrics.

"Pretty girl keep growing up, playin makeup, wearin guitar,
Growin old in a bar, grow old in a bar.
Headed out to San Francisco, definitely not L.A.,
Didn't mention you're name......" --St. Paul Westerberg

The greatest opening of a record of all time (The Replacements Stink):

"Hello, this is the Minneapolis Police...the party's over..."--anonymous police officer
--"HEY FUCK YOU, MAN!"--Dave Pirner

indeed it is, roadie.

"stink" is a really good little ep. "white and lazy" is one of my favorites from that ep (however my alltime favortie song from the ep is "kids dont follow", that song is so good). i must admit that i do enjoy the mats more punkier material quite a bit (though not nearly as much as their post hootenanny material). "sorry ma...." is a really good album. i mean , come on, it has "shiftless when idle", "johnny's gonna die", and "something to du" on it.

all of this replacements talk has definitely influenced me to have a mats binge...

They say that without REM sleep you are screwed. Hallucinations do actually take place. I know I couldn't do it. I've pulled an all-nighter (before my freshman orientation actually), but never two in a row. You're a strong man Joe. I remember when you went without sleep last semester too. It is currently 6:40 in the morning, and I have been studying one subject since approximately 8:00 last night, with about a thirty minute break to do homework for another class. I thought, "hmmm...astronomy...stars...fun stuff". I was very very wrong. Not fun stuff at all. I did sleep pretty late yesterday though, so I'm not too awfully tired yet. I will be by the time I get done taking the stupid test though, I'm sure. Plus, I have to go to two classes before I can even go to the class that the test is in. I'm more angry and sick of school than I am sleepy.

On top of this nonsense, I doubt I'll get any sleep all weekend because I have two finals on monday and a huge paper due on Wednesday that I need to finish this weekend.

This ,once again, proves my theory that school is not cool.

Ahh... so many good songs to pick from. "Left of the Dial" is definatley one of my favorites and I also really enjoy "Bastards of Young" and "Here Comes a Regular". All of these are from Tim, so I guess it's my favorite.

I guess I'm kinda weird because I love the fact that they fucked up so much. It's fun to listen to their records and pick out all the mistakes. Sorry Ma... is a great record to me. "Johnny's Gonna Die" and "Shifteless When Idle" are my favorite songs off that record.

And I agree R.E.M., The Smiths, and The Replacements are all amazing.

math does not. a play that was written 400 years ago by some guy who i don't care about does not.

As for an all-niter, I have never pulled anything close to what you guys are talking about. The only time I can think of would be last year (senior year of high school), I had to edit a drama project and do the credits, finish reading about 40 pages of "Brave New World", and study for a Spanish test. I didn't go to bed until about 4 A.M. and got back up at 6...other than that I usually put my 6.5-7 hours of sleep ahead of all else.

At least for now.

the class is on world war one literature. so we read some war poems. a couple of these poems had a lot of imagery in them about light vs dark and it made me think of the force. i think i said something like, "the speaker of this poem might as well be anakin skywalker because this is his life story - letting evil overpower him" or somethign like that.

one of the poems was about ice skating and i talked about Hoth.

while a good idea at 6am, it really wasn't executed very well.

a play that was written 400 years ago by some guy who i don't care about does not.
Just because I'm in a confrontational mood, and because I disagree, I'll say it does pertain to you.

I can only guess that a 400 year old play would be a reference to Shakespeare, and trust me, with any remote attachment to Western literary tradition (which I'm sure you have), Shakespeare pertains to you.

Does that mean you need to read his plays? Of course not, I'd never argue that. But the man's work pertains to you during at least a quarter of the books you read or the movies you see.

Speaking of which, last year my fiction final story was due at like 7 and I stayed up until 5 writing it, getting very sleep-deprived. When I awoke at 6 and read it, I realized that it was filled with shit that literally made no sense whatsoever, because I was falling asleep while writing it. Literally stuff that made no coherent sense. So I QUICKLY rewrote it, saved it, and turned it in. Got a B+. But when I was fully awake, I was pissed, because it was a story about sleep deprivation written under sleep deprivation, and the weird randomness of the original draft was something I could never consiously recreate, but I'd saved over it. I've been meaning to do it again ever since.

not shakespeare. ive read lots of shakespeare, have even been in a couple of his plays. shakespeare is relevant; john dryden and william congreve are not (in my opinion, anyway). thanks for playing.

Rachel, don't be scared. Yes, college is more work than high school. But you know what? By the time you've graduated from high school and been through orientation at college, you'll be ready. And all of the other freshmen will be in the same boat as you. It won't be more than you can handle. And for every stressful, painful thing about college, there are several amazing and cool things.

All the same, enjoy high school while you're there. Every night I ask God if he can PLEASE just drop me off in 1996, armed with everything that I know now...

I guess I can sort of see what you're saying, Keith. In high school, you have stuff due every day or at least almost every day. I suppose that makes it harder on some levels. In college, you might only have 6 grades in a class for the whole semester. But those 6 things are majorly important.

It's hard for me to believe that OVERALL, college has been easier for you than high school, Keith. That's incredible.

For me, high school was the Hell for which this is the reward. Maybe it was going to school in Chattanooga, where the sympathies for my interests of theatre and film were not the same as they were in Franklin. Still, I love this and hated that. Go to college Rachel, it is so much better than high school, even if it is more work.

Here is the deal. I have always been able to perform well on tests, papers and projects. I have never been motivated to do homework. In high school, about 50% of your grades were based on homework. I would make A's and Bs on tests, but end up with Cs because I never did the busy work. In college, they couldn't care less if you did homework as long as you did well on the tests and projects which I do. My GPA in college is a full point higher than my high school GPA.

Also, USN is a VERY tough and competative school. Belmont is not.

since it's finals time, i thought i'd give this a little bumpy bump. and here's my story to go with it:

so i walk into my boring ass sociology class today a little late. we were just supposed to be reviewing for the final exam next week, so i didn't think it would matter. so i walk through the door only to see everyone in the class with their heads down and writing. "oh, another teacher evaluation," i thought. wrong. the teacher handed me the "evaluation." it was the final. i told him "uh-uh, motherfucker, the final's next week!" and he was all "no, bitch, the final's this week!" the test proceeded to kick my ass for the next hour.

Fuck school! I hate it all, and always have. I never even wanted to go to kindergarten.

I have a paper due for this English/History/Honors class I thought it would be great to take "just for fun" (because I'm a freaking moron), a marketing plan that counts as the final that has to be turned in some time within the next couple of weeks, and three finals. And I'm really worried, because between work, stress, and multiple deaths in the family, I've missed a lot of days this semester (like technically I could get dropped from every one of my classes). And I really want to tell my algebra professor to fuck off.

Okay, I might be done ranting now. This was an awesome idea for a thread!

But I learned all those words from you! (j/k) And thank you!

I'm taking 14 credit hours next semester, but one is Event Management and it's taught Friday nights from like 5:00-10:00 and Saturday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM for just two or three weeks. Plus interning, plus work, plus volunteering, plus I need to take classes online through the community college back home...so, ummm, I feel entitled to say this again now: Fuck school!

I'm using Liz Phair for my marketing plan, maybe if I use a photo from the new album (you know, the barely clothed ones) I'll get extra credit?

Yes, you're a very good girl. And you helped me get rid of the creepy pizza guy!

It is a male teacher. And he told us to pick a real artist and make up a hypothetical marketing plan, and to include a picture...It's not my fault if the artist I pick just *happens* to be posed nude behind her guitar... ph34r.gif And he can't get me in trouble for who I pick, because he's the one who made us make up licenses for the 50 Cent song "P.I.M.P." and claimed he didn't know what it would be about...The whole class was like, "You couldn't have guessed?"

I agree. So far I'm three semesters into college and I still have no clue how to do anything even remotely resembling what I want to do (writer/director/producer for television). All of the classes that I am interested in or feel like they will actually help me either get filled up or have gobs and gobs of pre-requisites that I can only take one of per semester. And now, the Buffy film class, the one class in all of MTSU that I feel will really really really be of use to me apparantly has oodles of people lining up to take it and there's no way I can guarantee a spot. There should be a trivia test to get into that class...I would definitely get in that way...

Realistically, I can't imagine that it would be that crowded. I interviewd Dr. Lavery for a speech I'm giving tomorrow and he told me that. This might just be him over exaggerating or tooting his own horn, but I really don't know if the class' 25 person limit will be reached. Hopefully...

This post was just an excuse for me to use the term "tooting his own horn."

I think I'm going to fail every class this semester...And it's not that I care about failing them so much, it's that what will happen if I fail scares me. But yeah, I think I'm screwed.

Well, it's not so much failing the classes that scares me as losing all of the grants, scholarships, and loans and not being able to give it another try next semester. And my mother. She scares me. I once got all A's and one B on my high school report card, plus pulled a 4.0 GPA in a couple of community college courses at the same time and all she did was look at the one B and say, "I'm really worried about you. Do we need to get you a tutor? Can't you do better?"

since it's finals time, i thought i'd give this a little bumpy bump. and here's my story to go with it:

so i walk into my boring ass sociology class today a little late. we were just supposed to be reviewing for the final exam next week, so i didn't think it would matter. so i walk through the door only to see everyone in the class with their heads down and writing. "oh, another teacher evaluation," i thought. wrong. the teacher handed me the "evaluation." it was the final. i told him "uh-uh, motherfucker, the final's next week!" and he was all "no, bitch, the final's this week!" the test proceeded to kick my ass for the next hour.
deathscythe and i both got that shit pulled on us. my case was worse, as i walked into dr. kimbrell's free expression class without even the slightest clue that there was a final. i'd spent the entire previous night kicking the shit out of both of my roommates in ncaa football 2004. needless to say, that didn't help me with any of the supreme court cases discussed on the test. i walked in with an A and left 80 questions and several nervous stomach cramps later with my grade dashed.

okay, i need to vent more.

anatomy and physiology is a crock of shit. i fucking hate that class. i studied NINE HOURS yesterday for a stupid lab practical on muscles, histology of muscle tissue, the eye, the ear, neuron structure and the brain. that is WAY TOO MUCH for one lab practical! and when you study from the book, there's a nice little picture of the brain with th different parts and structures highlighted. i knew that shit backwards and forward. but when you go in to take the test, there's a big sheep's brain plopped on a tray with a pin in it saying "name this structure." i mean, c'mon! you can't even tell what it's pointing to! and now i have to make an 80 on the final to make a C so i don't have to take the whole damn class over again. what i meant to say was, school's going great.

take home exams suck major ass. granted you have all the answers in front of you, but they are more demanding questions and reuqire about 5-6 hours of your time rather than the standard 1 hour you would spend taking a regular exam. if i don't pass with an overall B average this semester i will raise some hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My biology teacher did the same thing when I had his class last year. Brother Love and I still managed to pass with C's, though I for one failed the shit out of some lab practicals.

ok, you got me, the 6 two pagers in sociology were actually assigned one a week for 6 weeks, then we had to turn them in all at once on monday. so actually, i had written 2 of them prior to typing this. (so i only had 4 to write for yesterday) other than that, yes, all of this work was assigned to me in my classes specifically the week of finals.
the good news is, I only have 2 more papers and 2 more exams to go!!

Okay, I'm going to fail the class my final tomorrow is for. It's a pass/fail class, and you have to get a 75% to pass...I can do about 60% of the material just fine. But I know the prof. will mostly test us on the 40% I don't know. If they'd just let me take the next class up, and skip this stupid pre-req., I'd pass the upper class. So why can't I just take the stupid higher level course and get it over with? And if I fail this class, I could ace all of my other ones and I'd still lose my scholarship. Isn't that peachy?

I tried taking an ibuprofen for my headache, which made me nearly puke. So much for the pain-relief idea. sad.gif

I think Naproxen (Aleve) is the only acceptable headache remedy. Ibuprophen (Advil) and Acetamenophin (sp? Tylenol) never fully do it for me.

That doesn't mean I didn't appreciate your drugs last night, Caroligula.

Yeah, I actually have special headache medicine. But if I took it, I wouldn't have studied for or shown up to my final. So I tried generic ibuprofen instead, and re-realized there's a reason I have prescription headache drugs.

School sucks just as royally when you are on the other side, as in writing exams rather than taking them. I just spent 3 hours writing exam only to find that the new printer I bought Thursday to replace my other malfunctioning printer has gone haywire and won't print. I have a stack of papers roughly the length of arm to grade, and a million other things to do. Not to mention the huge pile of shit I'll have to deal with next week because it's the last week of the semester, and every kid will inevitably act like a jackass. So, yeah, I agree with the rest of you: Fuck School.

I really failed a class. I always did OK on the tests, but I often decided to just not show up. I did exceedingly well in everything else I took this semester, I just didn't care about this one at all.

My mom is pissed at me, and I think she has the right to be. I pretty much knew I was going to fail, but I didn't care about that, I cared about her reaction, and the guilt I would feel for disappointing her. I've decided I'm going to pay her back for the class.

I'm just so burned out on school, but I'm afraid to take some time off and get a stupid job, because I know people who have done that, and then never go back.

This sounds kind of vain, but I know that I'm smart. Smart enough to do pretty well without any effort. But I really just don't care that much anymore.

Taking a year off from school was really good for me. I did go back, and when I did, I was much more focused. You know, from the time we're about five years old, we go to school every August through every May. It's only natural that after 14-15 years of that, a person would be really burned out.

You do seem like a very smart girl, though, so whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll be just fine.

I would go with death in the family, but they might require some sort of proof to back that up. If your parents are cool enough, it just might work.

Good Luck, 'cause getting a 75 at most for 2 classes would surely suck.

I slept through my first college final and woke up as it was supposed to be ending. I ran down there and told my teacher that I woke up sick as a dog and couldn't leave the bathroom. She let me take a later final and kept watching me the whole time and asking if I felt ok. I would occasionally make retching faces to freak her out and make it more believable.

Good luck!

If they ask for proof, you could just cry. It's kind of insensitive to demand proof that someone is dead...Most teachers won't touch that.

Be prepared to back up whatever story you sell. It's a pain for any teacher to go back, dig up the test, schedule a time for you to take it, grade it after all the rest are graded, and then change the grade. I'd have to really like a student to go through that kind of trouble.

i had a situation such as that on time, only my story was not bullshit. and she refused to believe me. "you're so un-original" she said. then there was one semester in chemistry, i had done so well in the class, not showing up for the final meant i could still pull off a B. that was one of the best 90 minutes of sleep i ever had. i earned the right not to show up. and a B was worth it!!!

I'm just so burned out on school, but I'm afraid to take some time off and get a stupid job, because I know people who have done that, and then never go back.
Taking a year off from school was really good for me. I did go back, and when I did, I was much more focused. You know, from the time we're about five years old, we go to school every August through every May. It's only natural that after 14-15 years of that, a person would be really burned out.

You do seem like a very smart girl, though, so whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll be just fine.
so when you take a semester off of school, do you just go online the next semester that you're ready to go back and register for classes normally? or do you have to be readmitted or some shit?

i've called two different administrative offices at mtsu, and they both gave me different answers. maybe i'll try a third.

oh yeah, and does anyone want to talk me out of switching to an english major? anyone?

At Vanderbilt, I had to take what's called a "leave of absence." You could take it for one semester, and then extend it for one more semester if you wanted. Starting it just required a brief meeting with a dean and filling out some paperwork.

I don't know if it works the same way at MTSU. Have you talked to your advisor? They would probably know, or at least be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

When I dropped out from MTSU in the past I always had to reapply. Perhaps policies have changed.

Oh, and be an English major if you like, just, from my experience, be prepared to not be nearly as interested in English as you think you are. Everyone's declared major is bullshit for the most part anyway.

Was that gramatically correct in the slightest?

I agree with the second statement. It took going to grad school for me to realize that college has a lot more to do with learning how to think and a lot less with gaining factual information.

Of course, there are many exceptions.

Not in the least. Of course, it was just my first draft. I was aiming for content as opposed to structure, clarity or grammatical perfection. Perhaps my poor writing habits is the reason why I'm no longer an English major. My penchant for violence against those people that incessantly proofread casual prose may be another factor.

thanks for the advice. i think my advisor is fictional. she simply does not exist. the last 10 or so times i've tried to contact her she has either been not in her office or "busy." psh, if by "busy" she means "busy doing things associated with not being a real person," then i believe her.

and the truth is, i don't know what the hell i want to do. right now, i'm a nursing major. i majorly dread the day the day that i'm done with all the prerequisites and i have to move on the actual nursing classes. i just thought that since i feel that way, i should look into something else.

so, what about education? yadadada? token? any warnings on that one?

also, what about native american studies?

Well, first, I loved being an English major. It made me far more interested in English than I even had been before (and obviously I already had a love of the subject which prompted me to choose that major in the first place.) I loved my upper English courses. I found most education classes, on the other hand, dull and unacademic. They were filled with the types of people who just can't wait to teach third grade, wear denim jumpers, and have apple decorations all over their classrooms. Ugh. Such classes did prove useful in the long-run, though.

Education, as a profession, has its ups and downs. Prepare to be underpaid* and to put up with more bullshit than you could ever have imagined. Get a job at a school that has an academic focus and a bunch of students who want to learn and respect you, and all of that is completely worth it. I just wish I could find that school.

Overall, I am finding my profession gratifying, but last year I did not. The majority of high school students in Metro public schools (and probably most districts around here) are bordering on illiterate.

Oh, and I can offer no advice on Native American studies.

*However, $29,000 as a starting salary is not that bad -- plenty to live on for me.

Isn't that the worst? I was in the same situation. I just decided to change advisors. I went to a professor that I really liked and just asked him if he would be willing to be my advisor. He said yes, we filled out a form or two, and that was that. In my opinion, having a good advisor is very important.

If I had college to do over again, I would major in English. It's what I love.

YAY! hey, maybe i'll see you around.

perhaps. probably not. there are some very respected subs that frequent our school. just don't take it too seriously. nothing is worse than getting excited about a sub only to find he is more strict than the actual teacher.

That rocks, JC!

If you pm me your sub. number, I'll request you every time (if you want to be requested.)

Last year one of my substitute teachers told my students she wouldn't tell me how bad they had been if they would just let her bum a cigarrette off one of them. Ha! I love it.

Yeah, be a good sub. And don't sub. for foreign languages if you have a lisp. In high school, our French teacher took a whole quarter off (we had year-round in AZ) to have a baby, and we got stuck with a mean sub. with a lisp...it's very hard to learn French from a person with a lisp, btw. Anyway, she wasn't very nice to us either (and our actual teacher had been really cool), so we didn't treat her very nicely in return...at one point during a lesson she suddenly yelled, "I want to kill myself!" So, umm, yeah.

I guess that would be my other advice, never sub. in Arizona. There's a reason the high schools look like maximum security prisons (the one I went to only looked min. security, thankfully).

I have to say "Fuck MTSU" for many many reasons, the latest one being that two of my teachers have decided to put everything on reserve, thus meaning that all of the students will have to fight over the materials for the entire semester. I've already lost out on reading one of the books, and it's only the second day for this class. This semester is going to blow...

It took me monthes to sort my schedule out, it took Belmont less than four hours to fuck it up again.

And you know something's wrong when your favorite prof. is from algebra...But her basic stance was "I know this is boring, I won't collect homework, feel free to answer your cell phone in class - just talk in the hall, and you can burn your books when this is all over." I think she's the only math instructor I've ever met who admits it's not fun and acknowledges that none of her students really want to be there. And she made it clear she doesn't want to treat us like five year olds, which I appreciate. Maybe I won't have the overwhelming urge to slap this one all through class (I hate people who are condescending).
