I will add Trouble Everyday. I mean Vincent Galo eats someone. He was already creepy enough then he goes and eats a girl's face. I will admit that I am strangely attracted to him though.

I saw the short film "Try" on the Smashing Pumpkins video collection DVD this weekend. It was extremely disturbing in the heroin junkie way. It was like a condensed version of Trainspotting without the comedy. More along the vein (pun intended) of Requiem for a Dream.

Okay, I had never heard of this, so I looked it up. Geez, this sounds absolutely disturbing. Where can I rent it?

Happiness isn't the most well-made film out there, but it didn't exactly leave me with good feelings.

eraserhead DEFINITELY is on my list...but i will tell you what is weird. i decided to look up vincent gallo earlier and saw that he was in basquiat. turned on hbo, and basquiat was on. this led me to look up the godfather because i always confuse robert duvall and dennis hopper (who is in basquiat). now the scarlet letter is on (robert duvall is in that) and gary oldman is also in it who also plays in basquiat! i feel like im in some sort of kevin bacon nightmare!!!

Well I saw it at the Belcourt this spring and I am not sure if it's on video yet or not. Before the movie the friendly staff of the Belcourt gave a disclaimer that film critics at Cannes actaully threw up during it. I knew I was in for a treat then. For the record, I did not hurl.

happiness and welcome to the dollhouse make my list. i forgot that kooky director's name. they're both funny though. i just viewed boogie nights as being really funny the whole time. requiem for a dream is up there too. death wish left me with a weird feeling. especially when young jeff goldblum(who bears a striking resemblance to don sergio)laughs maniacally while they're raping that girl. at the top of my list is the made for tv animated movie about the life of sammy sosa. if anyone would like to be horrified i'm sure wgn will re-air that stupid thing.

boxing helena was a wrong movie...

my list would have to include doom generation (or any gregg araki movie for that matter....except splender ..which i thought was cute and sweet)
caligula gave me nightmares whne i was like 9

and even though boys don't cry was more sad than anything...it just...made me feel ...i dunno..NOT RIGHT...for days after i saw it.

Todd Solondz & I agree with those choices. His most recent movie- Storytelling - was pretty decent & also disturbing, but not to the degree of the first two. I think this is because he cut the James VanDerBeek gay scene. Don't get me wrong- gayness is great, but James VanDerBeek is not. My #1 disturbing movie of all time (previously mentioned in the scariest movie discussion), though, is Man Bites Dog. Ick.

Any Solondz, Araki, or Korine film is going to get to alot of people. I'll add a more mainstream choice, though: Sleepers. I always feel dirty.

Oh, and definitely 8mm. I felt like having my soul remoed and dry cleaned after seeing that.

Oh, and The Cell.

I can stomach quite a bit. I've seen lots of films that could be considered disturbing--some I liked, others I didn't, most I could take or leave. I didn't think requiem for a dream was all that messed up. Storytelling had a few good moments but overall I think it was crap. Its dark, not disturbing. Same thing with Rules of Attraction. Bizarre, but not a good bizarre like Clockwork Orange. I consider myself a film junkie, yet I'm embarrassed to admit i'm not familiar with Araki or Korine. Havent seen Trouble Everyday or Boxing Helena. I'm getting to the point that if its a "shock" movie, i'm probably not all that interested cause I like being intelectually stimulated and inspired by film, not disturbed and confused. With that said, I did like The Piano Teacher 'cause what's her name was incredible, but I didn't *love* it.

Hands down, the most disturbing film I've ever seen is Water's Pink Flamingos. Sex with corpses, bestiality (real), self-mutilation, (real) animal mutilation during sex, and I think there was some incest as well. Interesting, but certainly not enjoyable.

If I know a film is going to be disturbing, I don't really go for enjoyment, but really just out of interest in keeping up to date with independent film and to be aware of what all is out there.

Seven
Dahmer ( I thought it would be more Gore, not about his sexuality but whatever)

Memento
Fight club
Pi
After Hours
The entire Faces of Death series

of course some of these films may not be gore filled throughout the entire film, but i think if a film makes you think about certain scenes more than 3 times after you watch it, then it falls in to this category for me. Just anything out of the "normal" in filmmaking

Okay, I know this topic is way old, but I have another to add to the list:

Dancer in the Dark

I rented this movie because I heard it was excellent and I'm on a big Bjork kick lately (she gives an incredible performance by the way). Luckily, I was warned by a good friend aa well as the check-out girl at Tower (who is super-cute by the way) that this is a distubing/intense movie. They were right. I'm glad I was prepared, but it was still an extremely engrossing movie. I'll not go into detail, but I will say that it is a very artsy, musical movie. Her voice is unlike anything I've ever heard. The movie itself is a bit shaky and gritty, but I suppose it makes it that much more unsettling. Rent this if you're ready to be depressed-- it WILL work.

I almost rente that about 2 weeks ago, but I didn't get it, I'm a Bjork fan as well, but I was not sure if I woul like her as an actress or not and I wasn't sure about the movie in general, I mean what is the overall plot of the movie?

Bjork is rapidly going blind and racing against time to raise enough money in a steel factory to afford an operation for her son with the same congenital deflect. Plus, she's a freak who imagines she's in a musical and constantly breaks into song.

Not so much fucked up, just fucking weird (and hilarious): The Killer Condom. It won a Berlin film festival award and has to be the funniest subtitled film I've ever seen. Of course, how wrong can you go with a movie whose main characters include a penis-eating condom, a drag queen, and a gay cop trying desperately to put a stop to the madness.

I tend to love the work of David Lynch; however, I did not like Lost Highway one bit. I saw it several years ago, and I could barely keep my eyes open through it. It's still "fucked up", it's just not to my liking. On the other hand, Blue Velvet and Mullholland Drive get my vote for this topic. Twin Peaks is my favorite TV series ever, but Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was a huge disappointment; therefore, it does not make my list. I've always wanted to rent the Short Films of David Lynch DVD boxset from VideoCulture but haven't had time to yet.

I also thorougly enjoy Happiness and will watch it again with pleasure.

I would also have to suggest Street Trash. Ray Davies and I rented it a year or so ago. It's...interesting...and a pretty terrible movie, too. It's worth renting for one specific scene which I don't want to spoil.

Hmmmm, fucked up films...

Pretty much anything by Dario Argento. "Opera" has plenty of eyeball slicing and "Phenomena" has Jennifer Connelly being chased by a psycho midget.

Doom Generation - Castration by scissors on an American Flag!

Caligula - The fisting scene alone lands this one here
Kids

Dead Alive - uber goriness dished up by Peter Jackson

Bad Taste - More Jacksonian goriness
Meet the Feebles - This film is sick and it involves puppets

Cannibal Ferox - The grossest thing is how parasite infested the actors become shooting in the Amazon. You can see blisters on them from a certain nasty worm that is native to the area. Oh yeah, and then there's "castration dinner" and other delights.

American History X - Just plain hard to watch.

Salo - It runs the entire gamut. This film was banned in most countries and the director was beaten to death by the crew and actors for the indignities he put them through.

holy shit, this is disturbing. i couldn't even make it through the first 30 minutes...

Salo - It runs the entire gamut. This film was banned in most countries and the director was beaten to death by the crew and actors for the indignities he put them through.

oooooooooooh, like what!?
Is that not the Disney film?? Oh.. no.. maybe that's Meet the Deedles...

Replying to "Stalker" on Salo...

If you want to get the story on Salo, check this out. The film can be had on DVD through import versions. It was released very briefly by Criterion and now fetches prices upwards of $600 if you can find an original DVD copy. There are bootlegged "Criterion" versions. I'd recommend any of Pasolini's films, as well as anything by Fassbinder.

Though I'd agree with the Fassbinder recommendation (especially Fox and His Friends, Marriage of Maria Braun, and Why Does Herr R Run Amok?), I must say that all of Passolini's work that I've seen was agregious in one sense or another.

I watched Rules of Attraction about a week ago. I didn't think that it matched up to American Psycho either. While I didn't hate it, I wouldn't buy it.

Does anyone have a copy of Blow-Up I can borrow? There isn't one in this town to rent, and I'm to lazy to look at Amazon to see if it's even for sale anymore.

I went to Blockbuster about a year ago (huge mistake, I know) to see if they had it, and the snot nosed film geek wanna be looked at me with a jeer and says "Blowup? Never heard of it." To which I wanted to promptly cross the counter and choke the little fucker, for the anguish that my 25 page thesis in film studies class gave me10 years ago. But instead I politely commented on their not 1, not 2, but 3 copies Swamp Thing 2.

I usually go to Hollywood Video, they have the best selection of stuff, but unfortunately somebody never returned it.

Little footnote to music history: Herbie Hancock scored the film in one live take (as was all the audio, no overdubs) His jazz piece, "Bring Down the Birds" is the sample used in Dee-Lite's "Groove is in the Heart". Chew on that one a bit. Dig!

Video Culture is clearly like the best video store in Middle Tennessee. I love that place.

And Peacefrog, near my home in Chattanooga, the only video store that isn't 20 minutes away is Movie Gallery, which had 2 copies each of Psycho II, Psycho III, and Psycho IV but not even a single copy of the original. They had the Van Sant remake, as well as a copy of the Hitchcock for purchase, but none for rental.

That's fucked up.

I would think so Ray as it seems to perfectly illustrate the Mod era.

I love how Thomas goes into a nightclub and The Yardbirds are playing and it feels natural whereas a film of today probably couldn't get away with its main character stopping by a club and, oh my!, there's Incubus playing in the corner. (sorry, I couldn't think of a better example for a band to put here, it's late)

that is my favorite part of the entire movie. i love it when Jeff Beck gets frustrated at the sound-guy at the club so he just starts banging his guitar against his amp. fabulous. and i cannot forget the brilliant performance of "train kept a rollin' (retitled "stroll on" for the movie) that they do in that scene. I read that Antonioni's original pick for the band during that scene was the velvet underground, but they couldnt make it overseas in enough time so he got the yardbirds.

and yes BrianW, it does perfectly illustrate the entire mod era, and that is why i love it.......

Freshman year, me and two of the guys I now live with went to see Dancer in the Dark (also not a happy one, if you aren't familiar). Afterwards we got word that Aranofsky was doing a free preview of Requiem about 10 blocks away, so we went and saw that too.

Moral of the story: never watch these two films on the same day. We were all contemplating the leap onto the third rail while waiting for the train that night... there seemed to be no good in the world to live for.

This one hasn't been brought up I don't think. "Leaving Las Vegas". I went and saw that film at a Saturday matinee and was supposed to meet some friends out later at a bar. I got there and couldn't even look at a drink. In fact, I quit drinking for close to 9 weeks after that. I was convinced I was heading down a bad path, and I probably was. That film probably saved me from a lot of bad coffee and weekly meetings. Plus the sheer irony that it would have been when the Features and I were playing poker in Knoxville with AA chips we found in a closet.

Ray Davies and I rented Roman Polanski's Repulsion and I watched it today (Mr. Davies decided to doze a little during the movie). I was looking forward to it because: it stars the beautiful Catherine Deneuve, it was made in '65, and it was directed by Polanski.

...I did not enjoy the film very much at all. I found it rather boring, actually. However, I feel that it fits into the category herein discussed. There are scenes involving hands bursting out of walls, and Catherine Deneuve just walks around like a zombie for a large percentage of the movie. Oh, and I had to cover my eyes many times because raw rabbit meat is shown at length. Yeah, i would say it is somewhat "fucked up".

Yeah, I'm bringing it back, baby.

So, I was too lazy to check and see if it had been mentioned, but I saw "Pumpkin" over the weekend. It's a dark "comedy" about a shallow sorority girl (Christina Ricci with blonde hair... eh) who falls in love with a physically and mentally handicapped guy training for the special olympics. The movie frequently mocks the handicapped in such a way that was just a tad too real for my tastes. The overall message was a good one: Retarded people are people, too. It definitely had its moments (especially in its portrayal of shallow Greeks), but for the most part was just really mean.

I mentioned this on another thread, but I also saw Storytelling and must say that I was disappointed. I guess it's hard to top Happiness. The Belle and Sebastian soundtrack was very entertaining, though, and I liked the homage to American Beauty (one of the best movies ever made).

I really like Buckin in "Rushmore." Something about Scottish accents..ahhh. Plus, he kinda reminds me of Ewan Mcgregor, my favorite Scotsman. In the Criterion Collection dvd, they have lots of people's auditions for the movie (Max, Ronnie and Donny, Dirk, and Buckin)...it's hilarious. Yes, it is. Its cover at Hollywood Video caught my eye. That's what prompted me to rent it.

The same issue features some really cute pictures of the dreamy Jason Schwartzman.
As in "Rushmore"??? as in Max Fischer?
Why of course. Oh, and I love your avatar, Buckley...and the signature.
Did you know Jason Schwartzman is like Francis Ford Coppola's nephew or something like that??
Yes, he is related to all the coppolas, including Roman Coppola (director of popular music videos), Nicolas Coppola (Nicolas Cage), Talia Shire (Adrian from the Rocky movies), Carmine Coppola (composer of music for Godfather trilogies) most of the Coppolas were in the Godfather movies. And also he's the cousin-in-law of Spike Jonze.

I used to be a regular in disc-go-round perusing the 99 cent racks for obscure music. While hunting for treasure about six years ago, I found phantom planet's first cd and loved it. The new one, eeh.

Yeah, me too. I actually did a double take the first time I saw it and wondered if the movie had actually been filmed long ago when Ewan was younger.

Roman Coppola (director of popular music videos),
And let's not forget CQ. Which also features Jason Schwartzman, Sofia Coppola, and...the adorable Jeremy Davies, who I think looks a lot like Matt.

I finally saw Secretary last night. This is definitely one of those movies you're much better off seeing completely ignorant of the plot. I knew a little bit, but my roomates knew nothing and I think they got more out of it. Either way, I think this movie was completely original. I would also like to point out that Maggie G. is so extremely hot in a way that I could never completely understand. Hooray for full frontal nudity!!! Outstanding!

The many times this thread has come back, I've never thought of it, but seeing it again on Criterion's recent Brakage release reminds me...

"Window Water Baby Moving" is the most fucked up thing you'll ever see. I can't even begin...

The By Brakage set has some great stuff on it though, and is recommended if you like highly experimental art and can deal with some fucked up shit.

Exactly.

And yes, if you have not seen Nekromantik, you must. I had to leave the room for one animal-related scene and close my eyes for another, but other than that, it will always hold a warm spot in my heart... wink.gif

And, Digsy, we haven't returned the video yet, so I'm up for some more if you are...
