what's your favorite home cooked meal? or what do you always ask your momma to make when you go back home?

my favorite has to be salsbury steak with cheesy mashed potatoes, greens, corn, and rolls.
followed closely by: mexican chicken, veinessan chili, and gulash.

Mmm. Mmm. Mmm.

on a related note: have any of yall been to arnolds? wow.

my dad makes really good lasagna with spinach and ricotta cheese. that'd probably be my pick. coming in at a close second would be the way my mom makes this dried vegetable soup mix that we get from the amish store in KY. that stuff rocks.

Among my favorites are maccaroni and cheese and fried sweet potatoes.

I look forward to later this summer when my mother's garden starts coming in. That's when I get all the good corn, tomatoes, greens, green beans, sugar snap peas, watermelon, butter beans, etc...

My mom makes a really good home-made chicken pot pie. She also makes really good macaroni and cheese and really good cornbread dressing. I make the best sweet potatos...

My little sister makes the best, desserts, though. Her banana pudding is seriously one of the best desserts I have ever tasted.

I'm not a meat and three fan. However, I'd love it if we could have a mb get together at Monnell's. It's a place that could accomodate a large number of us. We'll have to wait until there's a show near downtown Nashville I guess.

Swett's is great Sina. Definitely worth a trip out there. It's great this eatery has been home to probably the most mixed racial crowd in the city. People from everywhere know where to get some good food.

My favorite homecooked meal, that I can actually make myself now, is chicken with pasta with tomato sauce and a salad. I usually throw in some of my own spices in the sauce. Great stuff. Might have to cook some tonight.

I just can't get into "Southern" food - meat and three and the like. I know that makes me an oddball for Nashville, but oh well. I think Mexican food is my "soul" food. Mmmmm....beans, rice, tortillas, guacamole.

If I went home to FL to visit my mom, I'd probably ask her to grill me some fish and steam me some broccoli. Which reminds me how very glad I am broccoli was invented. smile.gif

as far as cooking goes, i don't do southern food. i leave that for the experts. that and sushi.

when i cook, it's usually weird stuff that i saw on the food network...a bobby flay cooking show or in a martha stewart living magazine. baking is my love, though.

My favorite meal on the face of the planet is my mother's Fettucini Alfredo with Fried Chicken filet... it's simply amazing. I know alot of people like their mother's cooking (and probably more don't) but I can honestly say that eating out for our family is normally only a treat for mom, in that she doesn't have to cook. None of us prefer any restaurant food to my mom's cooking... it's simply too good.

my dad is actually the chef of the family. he makes fantastic spaghetti and meatballs, sloppy joes, beef stew, assorted chicken dishes, pancakes, and matzo ball soup. my mom has him beat on hamburgers and french toast, though.

my new thing is to look up recipes on allrecipe.com; i've been cooking dinner a lot for my mom and sister. i make a lot of baked cheesy casseroles. i just don't like cleaning up afterwards.

my current favorite home cooked thing comes courtesy of exliontamer: rice, peas and peanuts cooked with lots of spices.

You're right, Swett's is great. Also, how could we forget Sylvan Park? Or the White Trash Cafe? Or Wendell Smith's? I swear, there are more meat'n'threes per capita in Nashville than anywhere else in the lower 48.

Personally, I don't like much of anything that my mom cooks, with very few exceptions. My grandmother on the other hand, wow, she fixes some excellent country food. Fried chicken, corn on the cob, cornbread..mmm. I could eat that stuff everyday. It is so good. They know how to cook in Hartsville, that's for sure.

I would have to agree with that. I don't know why I turned out the way I did, but only myself and one other cousin actually dislike all the "southern home cookin'." I usually avoid most vegetables and have still not eaten some fruits, and I usually end up not eating much at Thanksgiving. Off the top of my head, I can think of my aunt's sinful potatos (which are potatos with a gajillion types of cheese...basically a heart attack in potato form), stuffing, steaks...hmm...that's about it I guess.

My top is my mom's ground beef that she makes for burritos. The burritos are better than any mexican place I have ever found. Of course, I'm not sure how much skill this requires since it is all store bought. I guess because it is made with love.

i love meat+3s. except i never know what to get for my meat. if they have fried chicken, ill eat that, but the rest is jsut too scary for me and i dont eat anything but chicken and fish anyway. otherwise i stock up on starches: sweet potatoes being the favorite, mashed potatoes second, and macaroni third.

my mom is a really good cook, and experimental too. after we had invested $1,000,000 in basantes sweet potato ravioli, she figured out the recipie. i think my favorite of hers is this lukewarm pasta with a cold mexican-type sauce on top with cilantro, goat cheese, and pine nuts. or maybe its her guacamole [even though that isnt really a meal]. she puts fresh corn and grape tomatoes [among other things] in it. it is divine.

but all of this leads me to my next point: i love goat cheese. i love it on everything. europe was a dream for me because i could get a salad anywhere with some kind of great fruit on it with chevre.

also. i love smoked salmon. and fresh mozzarella. and [really] fresh pineapple. and those bottled tazo tea-juices that they sell at wild oats, especially the wild orange flavor. i almost cried when i finished my first one.

all-time best desert: bread pudding. nigella lawson makes a spectacular one that she calls "apricot bread and butter pudding." apricot jam on the bread. plump raisins from being soaked in rum overnight. crystallized ginger throughout. heavy cream throughout. and although i am obsessed with dark chocolate, i havent really liked any chocolate bread puddings that ive tried. if anyone can suggest a place to get really good bread pudding [preferably without chocolate or nuts] in nashville, please fill me in. fyi: bread & company is not good for bread pudding, in my opinion.

this is so long. i love food.

im a vegetarian so my input on this post is kinof irrelevant. that andf I can't spell.

but when i go home, i like to eat some tasty bow tie pasta in some zesty lemon sauce that my mom cooks - not sure what its called. mashed potatoes and maceroni and cheese are great as well.

but the only signature thing i have in jacktown is lots and lots of white wine. go figure.

when im looking for soul-food, i have indian or 'one love' (its a vegan cafe/ juice bar in memphis) mmmm mmm mmm . . .

ps fried green tomatoes anyone?

Unfortunately, racoons don't taste as good as they look. It's best served as a barbecue mixed with pork. Otherwise, it's pretty dry and gamey.

I love fried green tomatoes. But, I'm a little picky about them. The tomatoes should be a bit tart and not bland like they are at some places I get them.

Mexican food is the only food that rivals home cooking for me.

Sweets are my weakness. I'm quite the baking fool. I wanted to be a pastry chef for the longest time, but decided to turn down my scholarships to Johnson & Wales and other culinary schools to pursue a different career.

Oh, I made this imaginary restaurant and menu for one of the culinary competitions I was in a few years ago that consisted entirely of dishes that had something to do with either music or movies. It was quite dorky and awesome. Each dish had a title, of course, and a description that included many pop culture references that I'm sure my teacher did not get 20% of. One of the dishes was "Savoy Truffle" while another was "Chicken Caccia-Tori Amos". wink.gif

I too love bread pudding. I had a good one at the Belle Meade Plantation's cafe a few months ago- maybe it's called Martha's? I can't remember, but the food is delicious. Kind of more gourmet Southern- fancy things done with grits, etc. We also went to the Red Wagon for brunch that weekend & it was grrrrreat.

My favorite mom foods are her baked things- toffee bars, Italian Creme Cake. She sells her cakes sometimes, they're that good.

Glad to hear that Martha's is good. I just booked my bridal luncheon there, and I've never eaten the food. Sounds like we might need to try the bread pudding for dessert.

I have been curious about Red Wagon. Sounds good. But I'm also just hungry right now. Reading this thread is only making it worse.

i looked up some recipes and all of them have some sort of liquor in them and i really just hate that taste.

I love country cooking. No one in my family is from the south, so I don't get authentic country cooking at home (though my mom makes some fantastic biscuits), but I adore it. The problem is, you can't get good country cooking here in Chicago. Myself and a friend from Alabama up here used to go to Cracker Barrel once a month, a 45 minute drive. The waitress always asks if you want biscuits or cornbread- our unison response was always "both!"

The other thing that I go crazy for is Mozerella Cheese Sticks... the appetizer. I have to try them anywhere I see them. They used to have them at Burger King, and during those 15 months, I was a slave to the House that Whopper built.

well, i actually pull the wrapper back about an inch or two, gnaw off the chocolate, nibble on the leftover toffee then peel back another couple inches. it takes me about 20 minutes to eat a whole bar.
That's how I do it, too. What a coincidence! biggrin.gif

Oh, I just realized I misspelled toffee. I'm quite ashamed. I was thinking of taffy I guess.

banana pudding
i had some banana pudding at a meat and three across from Bobbys Dairy Dip this weekend. it was definatley not up to par. i like my banana pudding light and fluffy but this was kind of grainy and runny. and the nila wafers were all mushed up blended in. everything else was great though so id reccomend it, just not the banana pudding.
