TOPIC: How many CDs do you own?
Posted  Monday, May 3, 2004 at 2:23 PM
Post 1 of 30
It's OK to include CDs that you didn't purchase but stole by burning someone else's copy. EPs and singles are also OK.

Crap! I left out one. Imagine that 300-400 is 300-500.

I don't know what possesses me to come up with polls such as this one, or the more frequent random opinion polls on the Features.

I guess I wonder what is normal among this crowd.

I voted before I knew it was okay to count burned cds. Otherwise I would have closer to 90. I dont have very many, but considering I'm only counting CDs that I've gotten since last summer, I think I'm doing alright.

I still think that I have sold more CDs than I currently own, but I am not sure if that is true. Probably not now. I bought two more today.

I have kept track of my CD collection in an Excel Spreadsheet for the last 6 or so years, so I know how many I have sold. I have purchased 273 albums, singles, and EPs. I have sold 57 of them, bringing the total to 216. This does not include burned CDs because I can't think of any burned album I have that I haven't bought after receiving a burned copy. I do have a lot of mix cds, though.

I have somewhere around 2,000. I never get rid of anything.

I should add, though, that my CD purchasing has seriously slowed down in the last year. For many years I bought 5 to 10 CDs a month. Now it's more like 1 or 2 per month.

I didn't start my own CD collection until a couple of years ago. Luckily my dad and I share many musical tastes, so I've stolen quite a few of his CDs. A lot of times he buys stuff for himself and burns me copies. He likes The Features too.

I buy very few CD's (but I'm not a "music person" like most of you) so I have a hard time understanding this. With that many CD's, do you usually buy them, listen to them once or twice, and then put them on the shelf? Do you get that many CD's because you like finding new music, or do you just like collecting them?

CD's can be used for many reasons other than their manufactured intent: coasters, weapons of mass destruction, pleasure enhancers, mini-frisbees, fashion accessories, skeet targets, et cetera.

A couple more people need to have 600-800 CDs, and it would be even more beautiful. So...a couple of you with money lying around..go buy some CDs!

My prediction was that it would be bi-modal with many people having only 0-50 CDs. Especially the chicks.

All of the above. Some CDs I have listened to thousands of times. Others have only been listened to only once or twice. Some CDs I buy knowing I will like them, some are just out of curiosity, and some are for "collecting" reasons - with some artists (Neil Young, the Beatles, Blur, Bob Dylan, Self, Prince & the Features are a few who come to mind), I want to hear everything they've ever done. Like I said before, though, the thing is that I never get rid of anything. Most people sell CDs when they don't like them. I feel like I should hang onto everything. I'm a packrat like that.

600-800 (closer to 600), and I have very few burned, just b-sides compilations of bands like Radiohead whose B-sides are too expensive to collect affordably.
