I regret to say that I will not be present at this show. I could not pass up the opportunity to go to Lebowskifest, since it is so close and all. I'm going as the Big Lebowski (white hair, wheelchair and all).

I really wish I could go to the show. Ya'll better give me a full report...

Will there really be a kiddy pool at The End?? I can only imagine that playing in it there would be really cold.

It'd be nice to do Lebowski-fest, but the whole thing to me sounds too...too...too something.

We may make the show. I'd like to see Brian Carter again--viva broccoli!!

It was an awesome time. The beach theme was pure genious. I especially enjoyed the hula lesson tape being projected on the wall beside the stage. I still wish we could hear Derrick and Serai's singing on that song where they sing lead.

The only thing that bothered me was the apparent lack of crowd unity. It seemed like most people (unlike myself) were only there for Jetpack or De Novo Dahl. I'm not sure why both bands don't appeal to the same audience.

I definitely had too much rock this weekend. I'll be lucky to make it to the show on wednesday...

i think the unity thing could be easily explained. most any fan of either band is also a features fan, so on a night after an amazing features and character show, another very late very loud show may be hard to dedicate an entire 3 hours to. i mean what about brian carter? i thought he was awesome, but everyone was standing outside when he played. their loss for sure. i really want to see him with the full band. he conjurred up feelings of neil young in my heart.

i do hate the feeling of any kind of rivalry among fans, and i hope that it played no part in your observation carl. i have heard from people who move to nashville that they notice that our music scene has an apparent vibe of competition amongst the bands and the fans. the truth of the matter is that such negative vibe keeps our scene from growing into a better one. good bands, and fans of those bands do need to support the local scene in general. of course people will have their favorites, but lines in the sand eventually only box everyone in.

I'd say that's true if you consider the different genres of music represented in Nashville. I know individuals who are big fans of (for example) Submethod, The Loft, Lume, Del Giovanni Clique, Black Soul Choir, or The Features, but very few have any appreciation for more than one or two of the other bands. In fact, those that love one of the aforementioned bands will almost always have a deep hatred of at least one of the others. If they see one of the bands being more successful than their beloved band, then they're likely to become resentful.

However, having talked to several members of bands within the "indie rock/pop" scene (I'll refrain from my usual name-dropping for now), I'm always happy to hear about the mutual respect and appreciation the bands have for one another.

there is no reason in the world those bands should be grouped together.

yeah carl, tha hatred is the proboblem. and nothing good can ever come from the envy of someone elses success. i recently overheard some people griping about feeble weiner getting signed (or something of the sort, i really don't know), but why be mad at a local band helping put the scene here on the map. there are a lot of local bands that i don't adore, but none the less, i respect them for getting off their asses and making music. it is hard to coordinate 3 or more people's schedule and have like-minded vision and get people around you to like it. so when a couple of people do, we should applaud them, not tear them to shreds because they don't get our personal asthetic jumping. we need to be spreading more love dude. people have been calling me a hippie, so i guess i'll live up to it in some regard

My two cents: the reason for hate and/or competition amongst fans of bands (no actual band competition comes to mind) is simply the fact that there are many genres covered in the Nashville rock scene. Many local scenesters are fairly particular when it comes to which genres they will follow. Personally, I'm a huge music snob. I'm probably one of the worst. Locally, I really just stick to indie/garage rock, with no exceptions that come to mind. I think emo and jam suck. No exceptions in Nashville, unless you want to be technical and call Character a jam band (which I don't). Anyway, I think mall punk, emo and jam are terrible and as a result, would never say good things about any such band fitting that category in Nashville.

Let's take the Loft for example. I think their music is horrible and thoughtless, but they are acheiving what they aim for: bar music for 20-something year old frat kids (and I suppose they're good at it, given the context). Jetpack, while not emo, is still very Weezer-ish. Between those two alone...while they are rock, they definitely don't have the same people coming to both of their shows. And it's simply because of genre. The fans might argue the finer points of each group, but in the end, at least one side is gonna think the rest are a bunch of dumbasses for liking the Loft.

(I hope some of this makes sense, because it's really late right now and I'm very tired.)

Those words are so true, Mr. Ape. I agree completely. And it goes beyond just the local music scene. How about life in Nashville in general? More love is the answer. Oh, and Asschapel's album is really great.

exactly.

i don't like thousands of bands. so i'm sure as hell not going to like a band just because they're local.

but i like all kinds of music and it kills me when someone asks me my favourite bands and i list them off and then get asked "what kind of music is that?" first it upsets me that no one knows the bands i like, and second that they assume they're all from the same genre of music.

and i don't consider myself a music snob (though foldsfan made me feel like an asshole while discussing music the other night.), i'm willing to share my great taste in music with others. but i will ridicule others for not listening to me. especially when they ask.

and having children has given me great music discipline. i don't hate on my girls for liking the music they do.

I should clarify that when I said I was a music snob, I just meant that I am extra picky and I will tell somebody when their favorite band sucks (or at least that I don't think it's anywhere near as good as something else). However, as many can attest, I'm all about sharing the music. So, I guess I'm not a snob through and through. That's enough about that.

see, i don't like the idea of openly telling someone that their favorite band sucks. you may not like their music or even their entire genre, but that does not mean they suck, or that the genre sucks. it just means that you don't like it. and no one i know is the official end all of what sucks or doesn't. one reason people should support "local" acts is because they call bands that you do like and ask them to play shows. at said show the band you like will make money, play a show for you, and the band you don't like may just have a couple of fans who get to see the band you do like, and may decide to share your appreciation of that band.

i am not saying we should march around saying we love some band that we don't. i'm just saying we should cut some slack for those bands we think are alright or at least really good at what they do. we can't hold every band in town to the standard of our favorites. and my main point was that it is stupid to get mad when a band we don't like has success. it makes us whiners and yes, music snobs. all that it means is that there are people out there who really like that band, and they are entitled to like whatever they want.

in every community there are people who get along better than others, and there are people we don't think offer a lot, but for community to grow and expand we have to treat everyone with respect, and sometimes give them the benefit of the doubt. the same is true about about a music community.

one other point is that if someone hears you say something really mean about a band that they like, and they know that you really like some other band, they are prone to associate your attitude with the band you like. that certainly doesn't help bands that you like around town.

i am not singling anyone out with this response - just rambling

Case in point: this message board and opening bands for the Features. How many times have we ripped opening bands to shreds in the Reviews section of this board? Sometimes people from those bands come on the board to defend their band, and sometimes they don't. But always, I think, it reflects negatively on us as a community and perhaps even on the Features as a band. I have ACTUALLY overheard these words: The Features are a great band, but their fans are assholes.

I've been guilty of it too. I'm not saying don't be honest. Just maybe hold your tounge sometimes, or find something positive to point out. I'm sorry if I sound preachy. I just think that more unity in Nashville's music scene can only mean good things for EVERYONE involved.

it isnt ralph naders fault, nor is it the electoral system that lost the election for gore. the election was stolen by a republican supreme court. gore did win, but, you know, this isnt a democracy or anything. we dont get to choose our own president. your vote doesnt matter.

What's wrong the the electoral system? I'm very fond of the electoral college. Who would want our Presendial elections to be a popularity contest? We're not electing a Homecoming king.
The only time that the electoral goes in a different direction than the popular vote is when the race is extremely close anyway... so what's the point in having the electoral if that's the case?

So many things to say, so little time to say it.

My campaign slogans were said (typed) with my tongue firmly in my cheek.

As a platform, the Green Party's comes closest to my own personal beliefs.

I have a fairly good idea who Ralph Nader is, and I have read several books/articles/essays he has written.

I do not believe a third party is a viable option at this time. I believe I have mentioned my feelings on this subject in depth in a different topic. However, I do not have time to search for said topic at this time. Maybe later.

The Electoral College is an antiquated system and I forsee the demise of it sometime in my lifetime.

I can think of more things to say, but if I continue, I would be late for work.

I thought we agreed that that phrase should be replaced with a demonstration instead..

and what DOES it mean?

I've always wondered that myself. Funny how the term "cheeky" has pretty much the same meaning. What is it that links sarcasm to your cheek...or your tongue?

and Jesus was certainly not a capitalist.
It's true. The Kingdom will be a Socialist society.

Concerning third parties, I think you all know where I stand. There will never be any real, positive change in this country until we start electing third party candidates. The Republican Party is bullshit. The Democratic party is bullshit. They don't want what's best for our country, they're too chained to corporate fat cats, PACs, and interest groups to think or act objectively. In 2004, vote your hopes, not your fears.

man JC, you hit the nail on the head. if we wait to vote for 3rd parties once they are viable then they never will be. ceeze, i do humbly seek your forgiveness. i was in a bad mood when i wrote that post. i definately love me some tongue in cheek. i guess i am a little sensative with the subject because i caught so much flack during the election.

but i do think you should reconsider not casting your vote where your heart is. the whole problem with politics to begin with is that they do what needs to be done in order to win, instead of just following their convictions

much love to all, even you sina

by the way, we need to move on to some more relaxing topics for a while.
i know that most of the seriousness was my fault, so i'll try to direct us back to silliness.

well yes we are opening for k-max. it is a bit of a laugh, and it may be a strange crowd, but he is a fan and he asked us to play the gig. we will get a chance to play for a different crowd and that is always a good thing.
more love is the thing. i have not really heard any of his music since i was like 15 or something. i met him once around that age and he truly was a jerk to me, so i guess this is a good opportunity to turn the other cheek.

i think we may wear all pink.

If by "turn the other cheek", you mean totally upstage him. I know how much you love rivalries.

I wasn't planning on going for fear of the unknown, but all pink!?! I just might have to check it out...

I will probably be there, if I can somehow coordinate doing both that, and going to a strip club in one night. Any idea on what time you will be starting? 10ish?
I TOTALLY AGREE!

i think 10 ish is correct. i'll be happy to see you guys there. i am kinda surprised that there is interest. JC - i just want to wish you good luck tonight. i am really going to try to make it, but it is my mom's birthday and serai and i are seriously broke. i even had to back out of going to see blur.

i have a question for any gear nerd guitar players. there is a new silvertone hollow body guitar out. it is arch top and everything. and only $199. has anyone seen one or played one? it seems too good to be true.

if just one person can tell me it sounds even close to as good as the other hollowbody arch tops on the market, i am totally getting one soon. i am getting sick of playing the accoustics. i'm no hippie you know.

Man, I feel like an ass. I really really wanted to be there. I got very little sleep last night, so I was going to come home after work, take a nap, and go to the show. Well, apparently, I slept through my alarm, because here it is 11:50 pm and I just woke up. This sucks.

Well, you were on the guest list, and so was RichardDawson. Both of you were missed.

Despite technical difficulties, it was another great show. I'm liking DND more every day. I was surprised to see how big Derrick went over with the Christian crowd. He seemed to get the most screems of the night during his song. Anyway, good stuff.

Derek is one hot CCM ladies man, you know... Maybe it's the makeout song that drives the girls over the edge, or that high part in "Jeffrey".
