Post 1 of 18
hey, i just wanted to let everyone know that Year of the Rabbit is playing at the Exit/In tomorrow night (wednesday) - they are the new band from Ken Andrews (the former frontman of Failure) and are currently on Elektra records. Opening are Imaginary Baseball League (PROMPTLY at 9pm), followed by the Lucky Guns. This has to be the best thing to do on a wednesday night in the whole entire world.

love,
brandnewbie

1) I will definitely be there by 9pm

2) To curtainsfall: Just so you know, there's kind of an unwritten rule about one's first post at least mentioning The Features.

C'mon, I know there's more people going to this one. I think it's 18+ isn't it?

By the way, I won't waste a new topic on this, but I was wondering if anyone plans on seeing the New Amsterdams tomorrow night at the Exit/In. I realize it's uncool to like the GetUpKids and associated side projects, but I have to admit I kinda like that stuff. $10 is a little steep for a marginally good band, but I might check it out anyway. 'Cause I'm a high roller, you know.

yeah, i would be totally down for a sweet imaginary baseball league show...if i didn't have mono. again. for the second time in two months. dry.gif

and it's funny that you mention the new amsterdams. i just brought myself to put my dusty old getup kids' cds into the "to sell" pile today. to see this show now would just be a waste.

Actually, the mono probably never went away. When I had it, the doctor said that it could be in my body for up to six months, and that during that time, the symptoms might "come back" after they'd gone away. But, the doctor said, once it was gone I could never get it again...like chicken pox. I feel your pain, though. Mono is no fun.

ain't no shame in that. i rather enjoy a getupkids tune here and there. of course, what i've heard of the newer album is a joke.

well, the doctor said that it was a weird kind of case. once i get the steroids into my system, it only takes a day or two for me to feel back to normal. he said that there was something wrong with the way my tonsils are functioning and that he'd schedule me an appt. with an ent specialist. i, too, suspected that the mono had never left, but the doctor seemed to think otherwise. i thank you for the concern though. mono is, indeed, no fun.

Do you mean the last album or upcoming album? While not my favorite, I think "On a Wire" was their most interesting, mature album to date.

i'm not sure, but it was probably on a wire i was referring to. my friend bought it, we listened to it once, we both decided it sucked. maybe i was too hasty in judgement, but none the less i didn't care for it.

when i had an absolutely horrible case of mono, my doctor said that mono never leaves your body and it could come back at any point throughout your life.... sad.gif

So, I just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed myself last night. IBL sounded fantastic. My only complaint was that they didn't play longer-- but that's obviously not their fault. I think these guys are doing a much better job of arranging their setlists and making a conscious effort to avoid "dead air" between songs. Plus, they rock.

I can honestly say that I'm starting to come around on the Lucky Guns. I will agree with about 95% of the people on this messageboard that a full set from these guys is a bit hard to handle. But I'm starting to think that it's because these guys are sooooo high energy, it's just exhausting. They do a good job of incorporating the crowd, but in the meantime, they wear us out. I don't know-- maybe it's just me. I think it's hard to deny that they have incredible presence, energy, tasty guitar licks and thick basslines.

I left a few songs into YotR. I thought their set-up was cool (dark, smoky, bright spotlights, dark clothing, etc) and the music was very captivating-- for a few songs. I'm still not sure how to feel about the label "modern rock" and what it means exactly, but from what I can tell, these guys wrote the blueprint. The music seemed sincere, while not being too overdramatic or "emo". Definitely worth checking out.

All in all, great show. I also had a good time chillin at Obie's with a couple of rock'n'roll drummers talking brains and whatnot.

I, too, had a good time last night, and was in need of a night out.

I only really came for IBL because I am a huge fan, and to hear the Exit\In since it has changed hands-- I didn't think the sound was as horrible as everyone says, but has definitely gone south in terms of quality. The sound guy just doesn't know what he's doing it seems.

Lucky Guns-- uh, whatever. I didn't get into them, that was my first time to hear them. It really sounded like a bunch of noise to me, not very melodic.

Year of the Rabbit-- I've never heard of Failure, there, I said it. But, YoR was very good, I must say. The guys voice was amazingly perfect. The mood was dark, and I really enjoyed some of the things they did with the vocals. They kind of used them as guitar lines in a few songs. It was an intense show, although the musical side of it was, as Carligula said, modern.

Damn labels, I thought YotR was space rock. Modern rock always makes me think of Fuel, and that's not a good thing.
