From the wire...

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) - Jason Mewes, who played a pot-smoking slacker in the Kevin Smith films "Clerks" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," has been ordered to complete drug rehabilitation or face jail.

Mewes, 28, who failed to report for a court hearing stemming from a 1999 heroin conviction, had a warrant issued for his arrest in December 2001.

On Tuesday, he surrendered and pleaded guilty to probation violation charges. He admitted failing to report to his probation officer, take drug tests or undergo counseling. He also admitted leaving the state without permission and lying to his probation officer.

Superior Court Judge Michael D. Farren ordered Mewes to begin treatment within 10 days at Discovery House, a rehabilitation center in Marlboro.

Mewes, a Highlands native now living in Hollywood, Calif., must complete the program before he's allowed to leave New Jersey, Farren said.

If he violates his parole again, he faces up to five years in prison.

Mewes, who didn't speak during the hearing, declined comment afterward.

I was actually talking to a friend of mine last night about him. I knew he was a stoner, but I didn't know about him being into drugs THAT much. Have you ever seen interviews with him as extras on the DVDs? On the Mallrats DVD, he is completely gone the entire time they are interviewing him. I was like, "Jesus. He is completely stoned off of his ass."

Maybe both him and Kevin Smith will get locked up for some reason.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back wasn't that great but I don't think it was criminal.

By the time Dogma came out, I realized that if any one of those movies had come out and stood on its own, then it would've been great. The five of them together just make this massive mess of Kevin Smith's wet dream that he's a good screen writer or director.

Kevin SMith is an excellent screen writer. dogma proves this.

jay and silent bob wasn't made as an art film, it was made as kind of a "thank you" to his fans just givin' out inside jokes and stuff.

anywho, kevin smith rules me.
thank you for being a friend.

I disagree. Clerks proves this, Dogma disproves it. Chasing Amy proves it too. But Dogma is weak writing, weak direction, weak performances, a weak film.

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.

I agree whole-heartedly. I will add that Mallrats was damn funny, but poorly acted and directed. And I thought Chasing Amy wasn't as funny as it could have been. All in all, while I like his first two films, I think he's highly overrated.

I think that Kevin Smith is a good writer. Jay and Silent Bob completely sucked in my opinion. Chasing Amy I think is his best work... and for all the praise that clerks gets, I'd have to say that some of the deliveries aren't necessarily there. *shrugs* I thought Dogma was great, but it was trying to do too much in one movie. The explanations seemed a bit rushed in Dogma... but regardless, I think he's a great writer. I also think that everyone thinks too highly of him, however. The movies are at least entertaining.

I can agree with that, out of the 3 movies I would definitely watch Chasing Amy and Clerks over Dogma. Although I have watched dogma several times, I even did a report on the movie for my film class a year and a half ago. I was just shocked that my teacher had a Kevin smith film on the lists of movies to choose from.

Clerks is a very well-written movie. Its acting and pacing makes it hard for me to watch more than once every two years or so.

Mallrats is what it is. I watch it for the laughs.

Chasing Amy is an alright movie, but just seems to me to be Kevin Smith screaming to try and re-gain the credibility of his first film. He achieved this--a little. The dirceting is flawed.

My favorite take on Dogma is from my favorite film critic, The Filthy Critic. He says it much better than I could. Read it here.

Jay & Silent Bob...well, it's funny, sometimes.
