My god this new format is overstimulating. Just wanted to confirm that it is indeed Josh Rouse.

Does Josh Rouse really need to play in secrecy, I know he's a pretty big draw, but....

or is it just a joke of some kind?

Josh Rouse is a folk/pop songwriter who has lived in Nashville for a few years & had some national exposure of his songs on teen TV shows, talk shows, and on movie soundtracks like Vanilla Sky & Sidewalks of New York. I think he has some nice songs, but they sometimes borders on sounding too adult contemporary. He does good covers of Smiths & U2 songs, though. I've also seen him at Features shows, but only ones where Character opened.
I was wondering if it was a joke too- it's pretty arrogant to seriously think you need to assume a fake name when Badly Drawn Boy & Lambchop can have shows at the Slow Bar using their real names. Or maybe it's s'posed to only be a show for people "in" enough to know that it's a fake name? That's arrogant too.

Amen. There is something in the water in Nashville that breeds this almost laughable pretentiousness. I think my Brita filter catches it, though, so I'm safe.

...once when i was drunk, my friends were trying to get me to drink some water to help avoid a hangover, and i demanded brita filtered water. i think i should suggest that for a commercial.

Jamie, I was checking your sig to see what you thought was relevant to see just how pretentious your tastes were (and PT Anderson is definitely one of the more pretentious things to be in to [not that I'm judging because I'm a big fan and I can't wait for the new movie ((which my roommate saw while interning at Cannes)), just commenting], not to mention including both Punk and Post-Punk) and I realized that everything that you deem relevant begins with a P (another link to pretentious, even). Any reason for that?

And how pretentions is the parenthesis within parenthesis within parenthesis?

i don't think that it's josh rouse being cocky. i just think they do it all in fun. he's on tour right now but that's not an official stop so maybe they just want to not advertise it so much. i wish i was there to go see him. if you really want to figure out who he is, don't look on vanilla sky, but go get his album "Home".. I think it's great. Highlights- probably Laughter, Marvin Gaye, 100 m backstroke, actually all of it. and grimey is on his new album, "under cold blue stars", and he owns slow bar. it's cool. anyway, don't knock him 'till you try him. his manager ph34r.gif is cool too biggrin.gif

Well, Will, in the days of yore, on this message board, everything was deemed either 'relevant' or 'irrelevant' by a man named brianeno2. Eno has since retired, and that signature is a bit of a tribute to him, as he used to have similar signatures with the latest update on what was and was not relevant. Yes, all of the relevant items start with 'P'. Why? That's a secret. But when I decided to do 'P', I just kind of listed things off, stream-of-conciousness style. I'm sorry if some things listed are pretentious. In all seriousness, I think that I am one of the least pretentious people that I know (or at least I try to be).

By the way, I like your signature. That is my favorite BFF song.

Thanks for the bit of history... I had wondered if anyone could be as pretentious as to dictate what was and wasn't relevant at whim... I sensed that it was in jest in some way. Eno seems to be a hot topic lately.

And I didn't mean to indicate that you were pretentious. Really, I said that just so that I could accomplish my goal with the parenthesis. Meanwhile, I do think that PT Anderson is pretentious, but I love his stuff. I don't view pretention as being all that bad, but that partially comes from being a film major, and its almost instilled in us to like things like the French New Wave, which was just a pretentious (albeit cool) movement. Take Radiohead as well. Its hard to say that they aren't pretentious. But I love em anyway.

Hands down the best BFF song. And he's been playing it live a ton lately. In my 10 shows that I've seen (him or with the "Five") thats one of the few songs that I've never seen. I'm pumped for the next chance.

Hope I didn't offend.

when i was in scouts (yes i'm an eagle scout) we had a PUR water filter when we went on long backpacking trips. that thing was a life saver because it meant we got clean tasting water instead of having to purify water with iodine tablets which i may add is the sickest thing in world to drink. so if you use a brita water filter and you still don't like the taste...don't complain...i've had worse.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

confirmed. And Last Polka is also one of my favorite Ben songs. I know he played it at one of the shows that I saw in the past year, but I can't remember which one. He's releasing a live album this fall of stuff recorded during his recent solo tour- yay!

And he's been playing Kalamazoo and Silver Street and Elton John's Tiny Dancer as well. Hopefully these make the disc. I can't wait. At shows that my friends have attended, he's stopped the show to record backing vocals for the cd for tracks like Army. Should be very interesting.

Yup- to clarify, he stopped the show to record the audience singing the harmony parts on a bunch of songs, which sounded amazing & was smart since everyone always sings the songs at shows anyway. He's a good choral director. And I have to brag that Tiny Dancer was per my request after he put on some sweet circa 1974 Elton John glasses happy.gif

I saw the Josh Rouse show that started this topic and I must say that I loved every minute of it. I suppose it was pretentious to do what they did, but it was still a packed house with the subtle advertising. Of course, the Slow Bar website and Nashville Rage made it painfully obvious that it was going to be him.

By the way, Ben Folds Five was the most underrated band of the 1990s (in my opinion). While I think TUBORM was their most inconsistent album, I might say that Mess was their best song. I would also say that Alice Childress, Philosphy, Emaline and Evaporated also rank highly.

Also, PT Anderson is the bomb. Boogie Nights was very underappreciated cinematically. All anyone could talk about was Mark Wahlberg's fake schlong.

Welcome Carligula!

I thought the Rouse show was OK. The first couple songs and the last couple songs were really good. Everything else kinda bored me, but I am not as familiar as I guess I should be with Josh. I can say that Marc Pisapia fucking rules and the JMB rhythm section certainly adds a lot to his band. Overall, I'm glad I went to the show.

I think Whatever And Ever Amen is less "consistant," but generally more enjoyable than Reinhold Mesner. Their first album is their best.

(Edited by Keith at 6:46 am on Jul. 12, 2002)
I TOTALLY AGREE!
