I keep hearing the rumor that someone is writing a book called "Soaking in the Center of the Universe: How A Local Indie Rock Scene Elevated a College Town to Mythic Heights; The Seattle That Never Was, Mufreesboro 1990-2000."

Has anyone else heard this? it's probably another rumor but that was the full title as it was told to me. would be a fascinating read.

Wow! That sounds like it would be really cool and very informative. Therefore, we can probably assume that it will never happen because a shroud of enigma has been thrown over the behind-the-scenes workings of Murfreesboro.

Wow indeed! It would make my year if someone did something like this, and did it well. I'm not much for "The Seattle that Never Was" as a title, though.

Also, those dates intrigue me. 1990 - as far as I know, the "scene" didn't really get going until about 1992 or 1993, whenever Ella Minopy splintered and caused the Big Bang that started Spongebath. Is this not true? Also, 2000 - I suppose that implies that the scene ended when Mahaffey left?

I hope this book is a reality.

I think 2000 would be a good ending point for the scene that I never really knew. Mahaffey left. Fluid Ounces went through several line up changes that stole all of their momentum. Spongebath effectively died (stopped answering the phones, fulfilling orders, etc.). The Features started playing more shows out of Murfreesboro than in the town. Didn't the Katies leave around this time, too?

While in some regards the scene still exists, no one expects it to be the next Seattle or Athens like they once did.

actually, the reason it ends in 2000 is because that was the year i moved away from there.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

Well, considering it's the most populated state in the country, obviously there's SOMETHING in California that people love.
whatever.
this book sounds dope. i think the year range sounds right, gives a nice ten year chunk of history and lore. i think around 1990 it was still a nascent scene. of course any band sam baker was in is worthy of a chapter in and of itself.
i would imagine the juicy stuff is from 94-99.

Well, I'm moving to LA (after school) because you can't make movies anywhere else. And who wouldn't want to make movies?

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.

I think the book should start in the 30's and include Uncle Dave Macon.
