TOPIC: Need Some MB Help
Posted  Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 10:30 AM
Post 1 of 27
Hey guys, I'm editing a documentary on the American Solar Challenge, a race on Route 66 from Chicago to LA using solar powered cars. We have enough money in the budget for one or two pop songs.

Can you help me think of some songs that have to do with sun/solar/road/racing/open space/go west young man type music. Almost anything is in play except the Beatles... way to pricey. I have covered most of the obvious ones but I won't limitit you with my list. There's probably a cold beverage and maybe even some worthless title in the credits for you.

Thanks

If you want local stuff, the luxury liners have some GREAT power-pop songs about the sun.

If you want mainstream, you can't go wrong with John Denver's "Sunshine on my Shoulders".

I'm all for local stuff... I'll check that out... John Denver may be a bit slow... looking for a bit more drive to it... ala Sheryl Crowe... I'm in love with with some Joshua Tree stuff (there is a ton of desert footage) but I'm afraid PBS or HBO may wince at that price. Keep thinking!!!

I've got the perfect song for you, Peace Frog:

"Section 2 (It's the Sun)" by the Polyphonic Spree

It's a beautiful song and it's definately about the sun.

I can get back to you with some others, but trust me...that's your song.

Obvious? No. Brilliant? Yes. Okay, maybe not.

-For an open road kind of song, "Running Down a Dream" by Tom Petty would be great, but maybe it's too expensive. Or "Wiser Time" by the Black Crowes.

Keep em' coming... JC I'm checking out Polyphonic as we speak. Running Down a Dream and Middle of the Road are on the yes bin. Exactly where I want to be.. I have "California" by Phantom Planet in there, too. "Who Loves the Sun" excellent... in the yes bin. Tom Cochrane... man I haven't heard that forever... gonna give it a listen.

John Denver's "Sunshine on my Shoulders".
"Man, that John Denver's full of shit"

....sorry, I cannot resist the opportunity for Dumb and Dumber quoting.

But, I second "Who Loves the Sun", and there's always "California" by Rufus Wainwright and "Sunny Afternoon" by The Kinks.

GOD SINA...
I don't recall listing my 40 plus songs... alot have been mentioned... but I did get some fresh ideas... I like the Polyphonic Spree... but unfortunately the mention of suicide in the first line kinda made my partner cringe... he liked the Reach for the Sun from PS... until I showed him the iPod/New Beetle commercial.

If you think of anymore, let me know. The good thing about this MB is that some more obscure stuff will come out, meaning we can buy that for less and still have money left over for a more commonly known pop song.
