I am very much looking forward to the new album. "Internal Wrangler" is fucking amazing. "Walking With Thee" is really good, but not as good "internal wrangler".

Domino Records' website is reporting today that melodica-happy Liverpudlian cavern-rockers Clinic are preparing their third full-length studio album, tentatively titled Winchester Cathedral, for release later this year. According to Domino, no less than 13 new songs have already been recorded-- and the label was even kind enough to enlist tape operator Erasmus Benedict to jot down brief descriptions of each of the tracks, which have been published on the label's website.

From the sound of things, this record could be quite a departure from the canyon-reverb of their past two studio releases (as well as their self-titled b-sides collection). In the introduction to the track descriptions, Benedict reveals that "there's an overall deranged party feel to the music broken up by several mellow Bread freak outs. A marked shift from the darker character of Walking With Thee."

But the changes, it seems, go a bit farther than that: one song is described as, an "upright piano led pop song with addled fuzz" and "reminiscent of 'The Night Chicago Died'"; one is said to feature "Shirley Ellis verses and a baroque chorus... almost includes a guitar solo"; one is referred to as "slightly central European in character but with bar room piano and massed percussion"; and one employs "a mounting primeval rhythm with Brazilian overtones." And it looks like Clinic are putting that Universal Records recording budget to good use: Benedict counts Sicilian guitar, marimba, finger cymbals, "psychedelic box," classical distorted organ, slide guitar, wind chimes and a bullwhip as among the instruments used during the sessions.

The band's new still-very-much-under-construction website seems to hint at the band taking things in a different direction as well, with a markedly 1980s feel to it, skeletons virtually everywhere, crazy Flash animation that sends bolts of electricity through nearly every selection, and even a skeletal arm, which is depicted drawing the band's new blood-dripping, (dare we say) highly Zwan-esque logo.

No release date has been given for Winchester Cathedral as yet, but judging from Benedict's writings, it's pretty much finished, though some final recording and/or additional mixing may still be in progress. If that's the case, our guess is mid-to-late summer. In the meantime, enjoy this "provisional tracklist" (and keep in mind that Clinic are highly prone to last-minute title changes), or hop over the Domino Records website to check out the whole piece.

i'll just say that the thought of a bullwhip in a song gets me really damn excited. especially if it's a bullwhip hitting windchimes.
Nothin' gets in my way....Not even locked doors!

i ordered mine on the internet (this was probably a year & a half ago)...it seems like i've seen it recently though, maybe at tower? i believe it's still in print, so you shouldn't have a hard time finding it.
