So many, many months ago I saw "24 Hour Party People" (a film that you all should see, especially Ray Davies, if you haven't yet), and I was introduced to Joy Division, and I got Heart and Soul, and it was wonderful. Watching it again, I feel the desire to enter into the world of New Order... but I don't even know where to begin. The press on Retro, their new Heart and Soul-based box set, has been negative, and I hear that the band now has more greatest hits albums than actual albums. So my question for the musical elite here on the board is this:

if you were going to get into New Order, how would you do it?

It'll be interesting to hear what is said.

I would buy "substance", their two disc set of singles and b-sides first. if you like it, then i would buy "power, corruption, and lies". I got a sampler of the "Retro" box set from the station and I liked it quite a bit. However, I don't know if I would be willing to buy the box set. I don't really like the tracklisting, and I'm a much bigger Joy Division fan than I am a New Order fan.

I have been meaning to see 24 Hour Party People for quite some time now....Damon rented it and said it was fabulous.

Yeah, the "Substance" set, with its Joy Divison connotations and all, is tempting. It doesn't cover their work beyond the mid 90s, but maybe this is a blessing in disguise?

And yes man, see 24 Hour Party People. Its a great movie even if you don't know any of the bands already. If you do, I can't imagine how much you'd like it.

24 Hour Party People was a great film. Highly enjoyable. I was happy to be introduced to the Happy Mondays. They were sort of overlooked it seems while Joy Division and New Order went on to greater popularity in Europe and the US.

Spearking of Joy Division, you can hear the clone of Ian Curtis in the guise of the wildly popular Interpol. "Turn on the Bright Lights" is a noteworthy album, but the vocal resemblance is eerie.

i've only heard three new order albums(movement, power corruption and lies, & substance), so i'm not qualified to really say. "blue monday" is easily one of my favorite songs ever, but the album it's on(power...) drags to me. substance is all 12" mixes so you'd get drawn out dance versions. movement is them trying to sound like joy division. they're one of those bands who i'd love to make my own compilation of. i just can't afford every album.

the "best of new order" compilation is pretty good. it features most of the popular new order tracks in their original mixes......however it does not contain three key songs: ceremony, confusion, and temptation.
