TOPIC: NME wrtier's 100 best albums list
Posted  Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at 12:09 PM
Post 1 of 30
THE STONE ROSES' eponymous debut album has been voted the best album of all time by the writers of NME and NME.COM.

The poll, conducted for the first time in ten years, saw the Pixies' 'Doolittle' LP, also released in 1989, come in at Number Two. The 1993 winner of the poll, 'Pet Sounds' by The Beach Boys, is at Number Three this time.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, The Strokes represented the Noughties, with 2001's NME Album Of The Year 'Is This It' entering the chart at Seven.

The full Top Ten is:

1. The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses'
2. Pixies 'Doolittle'
3. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds'
4. Television 'Marquee Moon'
5. The Beatles 'Revolver'
6. Love 'Forever Changes'
7. The Strokes 'Is This it'
8. The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead'
9.The Velvet Underground 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'
10. The Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The Bollocks...'

(taken from nme.com)

I'm just happy to see "marquee moon" get such a high placing because that album is amazing.....

I only own three of those albums but...it just doesn't seem right that the Pixies and Television would be above the Beatles. And also...why are the Strokes so high?

Okay, I absolutely love The Strokes, and Is This It is seriously one of my favorite albums of all time. I also love every other band listed, except for The Stone Roses and The Beach Boys (who I'm just kind of indifferent about). I really don't care what anybody says, not one of those top five artists should be above Revolver. And, not one of them should be above "The White Album", or just about any other Beatles album for that matter. It's just wrong. I mean, really, are The Stone Roses better than The Beatles? I don't think so....in fact, I know they're not...but apparently some people think they are. It really infuriates me. mad.gif

I guess if every thread is going to be about The Strokes, I may as well chime in on the subject. I think they are ok, but lazy. There are some cool bass lines on Is This It, but everything else from the guitars, to the drums, to the vocals, just seems lazy to me. I don't mind lazy and, ahem, languid music, but it just doesn't really work in a "garage rock" band. That said, I don't at all mind listening to the album (I put it on in the background a lot), but it doesn't particularly move me.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

well...i'd rather hear the self titled stone roses album than some of the stuff on HELP!...although all of the songs on the movie are great...i like it more than some of Let It Be...plus you have to take into account that the stone roses are still like royalty in the UK. overall, i agree that Revolver should be rated above all of those, but I still think that The Stone Roses deserves a spot in the top 10, especially in a UK magazine.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

Well, I haven't heard a lot of stuff by The Stone Roses, just some. Of course, I prefer my Beatles over anything, but I don't have a problem with The Stone Roses being in the top ten at all. I just wouldn't have it that way myself, if it were my list...but, it's not.

For the most part, I agree, Sadie. But I'm not surprised. Those fucks at the NME are so predictable, with their Strokes and whatnot. Just look at this list, people. Now look at it again. One more time, look at it. You'll see ten fine albums. But do you really think that these are the 10 greatest albums ever recorded?

Collectively, no, they are not the ten greatest albums ever recorded. I agree with one or two, I will give them that. But, as I said, the rest resembles the poo.

First Q puts "Live Forever" at #87 on the Greatest Songs Of All Time and now "Definitely Maybe" or "(WTS)MG?" don't even get in the NME top 10 albums ever. I used to have so much faith in England...

You're probably being sarcastic, but I really do love those albums. They were timeless rock albums, I think.

You're still new here, so I guess I have the job of informing you that the two most rabid Oasis fans in the southern part of the US post on this board: them being Damon and myself. My name is from "Digsy's Dinner" and also a line in "Be Here Now."

"Morning Glory" is my favorite album of all time. I was being sarcastic in my post...sort of...I actually have no idea what I was going for there. I'm trying to write a paper on The Jungle and it's making me loopy.

That sums up my thoughts pretty well. I don't see how an album that's been around less than five years can even be considered as one of the greatest albums of all time. To me, greatness means standing the tests of time and passing fads.

How funny is it that I only own or have owned 7 of those? I've heard about 3 more of them. I am in a bubble, but I know enough about all those music people to know that they suck and I hate them.

This list is irrelevant.

That list is DEFINITELY irrelevant since it lists two Eminem albums as well as the White Stripes' "Elephant" which isn't even coming out for another 3 weeks. I mean, that is taking it to the extreme...I just sigh all over that list.

readers polls are fluff. they should leave the task of making definitive lists to the professionals like all those great editors at rolling stone, spin, alternative press, and cmj.

for the record cmj and alt. press, two once great voices of fresh music, have completely lost their original visions.

smee & i were talking about that tonight. magnet seems to be the overall coolest. they're not indie elitists, so they'll actually cover stuff like queens of the stone age and ween. rolling stone is practically worthless. spin has some really good articles. mojo's great for reading about old bands. chunklet is great, not so much for their music coverage, but for the humor. you're pretty much right though. no one seems to have the guts to say what they think anymore.
