For a second, my heart stopped when I opened this thread, as I thought Mr. Eno2 had returned. But alas, he remains in retirement.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

My general question for every one is what you think the legacy and place of Nirvana is 10 years after they hit it big with Nevermind and all that.

nirvana was a good band but certainly not one of the 15 best of all time......if kurt were still alive a) no one would be saying that because it seems these days you have to be dead to get recognition for anything. cool.gif nirvana would still be no more.

dont get me wrong...i like nirvana...they just get too much credit......

i hope in 10 years people don't refer to some of the shit bands we have today as 'great' ......like creed....ick ick

and by the way.......you left out The Frogs
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

the frogs are good, but NOT in the top 15. I saw them live last year and it was seriously the most terrible show I have ever seen - the biggest dissappointment of my life.
Nirvana, yeah, they wouldn't be nearly as recoginzed if kurt were still around today, (its like the whole beatles/ stones thing in another thread) but you have to admit it, they wrote some good tunes. Relatively speaking, they weren't phenomenal musicians but they defined us as a generation. they spoke to all the kids who everyone made fun of in middle/ high school. plus, while not outstanding lyricists either, kurt had some good stuff to say. it was an important time. Nirvana rules me - not necesarily because of their talent, but bc of their symbolism. But their talent should not be overlooked. Bleach is great album, nothing innovative, but punk rock roots - they get me every time. Nevermind, while sickeningly clean sounding, still has some good rockin tunes. and next year, when its been ten years since, it will still be revered as one of the greatest albums of all time.

speaking of, and I am probably the only person who still cares, but do you think kurt cobain killed himself?
thank you for being a friend.

(Begin Devil's Advocate or the role of the average rock critic) Hmm... Nirvana is generally considered the best band of the 90s.  Whether or not you agree with this is one thing, but critics and random pollings on Rolling Stone and other places have come to this conclusion.  So does the best band of a decade not qualify for a top 15 slot? If not, then certainly a top 25 or 30.

And reading about the material Nirvana worked on in the final months of Kurt's life, and future plans he had, reveals that Nirvana would probably have become a much different band if not a solo act for Kurt. So who knows how things would be if he were still alive today.

(Now begin my opinion) Anyway, I believe Radiohead is the much better band and certainly more qualified for the title of best of the 90s, if you can truly come up with such a title.

Ummm, its 2002 right? I could have sworn Nevermind was released in 1991. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuse me. I wasn't trying for specifics, and for some reason I guessed such a thing would be pointed out to me since I sometimes point out such things...

Nirvana was great, but not top 15 of all time.  If for no other reason, because they only made 3 albums.  Three albums is not enough to accurately place someone in the top 15 of all time.  It's the same as when people talk about the Sex Pistols being one of the greatest bands of all time.  It's like, how can you tell that from their *one* album?

Bleach and Nevermind are good (though more and more I'm recognizing that Nevermind was a Pixies tribute).  But In Utero is BY FAR their best album.  Really, seeing how they developed from Nevermind to In Utero makes me think they could've been one of the best bands of all time.  I've heard that Kurt was about to start working on a really dark acoustic album with Stipe when he died; that could've been amazing.

Right, Jamie, I read the same thing. Reading Stipe's description of what was going to be the next Nirvana album is pretty heartbreaking. It could have been special.

michael stipe is in league with courtney love, and courtney love is evil. evil, stupid, ugly, and horrible. i wouldn't trust a word either of them said.

I agree, In Utero was their best album. I think it's amazing that something so dirty and noisy was like the most popular album in America. Horray for rock.
Too bad we couldn't have seen the next step. Lost forever, like The Beach Boys's SMiLE, which I've been listening to the bits of recently. That would have been an amazing album. The vocal break alone in 'heroes and villains' is enough to convince me.
