TOPIC: Overrated Albums...
Posted  Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at 10:39 AM
Post 1 of 25
Sometimes an album comes out and it's like everyone just has this preconceived notion that it's brilliant. However, deep down, everyone is afraid to say how truly sucky and overrated it is. So the question is.. what is the most overrated album , in your opinion.

In my opinion: Tapestry by Carole King.

A famed Brill Building composer puts out her first album and everyone deems it a "classic", the quintessential singer songwriter album, the cornerstone of the singer songwriter movement. I bought it, listened to it, and thought,"there's a few good songs on it, but it's no masterpiece". I've given it a few more listens and I just don't see it. it wasnt life changing, I didnt feel the earth move under my feet. The songs were slight in my opinion. So tapestry is therefore....Overrated.

A better singer/songwriter album is "Blue" by Joni Mitchell.

I'll second that. I lost the best baby I'd ever had once. It sucked. Oh and in the immortal words of Q-Tip, "Joni Mitchell never lies"

Creed should be banned from...well, from living.

I remember Rolling Stone giving Green a 4/5 stars. I do think it's a good album with good songs but it is the worst Weezer album. I think the reason that it was so well received by critics when it came out was because it was a breath of fresh air. For once it was good pop/rock music that didn't involve "death" or "child support" or "divorce" or "groupies." The fact that Weezer are back in the strength that they are just amazes me after going back and reading interviews with the band from 1997. Go Weez.

doesn't kid rock fit into the same singer songwriter category? what's more, did he not have his own midget? surely this makes him as historically significant (or relevant).

i'm not exactly a fan of either (king & mitchell, rather than kid rock & his midget), although i can appreciate it. it's good music, but not really my thing. you're so vain wouldn't be half as cool if it weren't fo mick in the background (or chevy on snl).
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

Ditto. I do remember seeing Carole King on The Muppet Show once though. She was involved in an earthquake...

I do know more about Joni Mitchell though. I've just never really been a fan of the female singer/songwriter outside of Sheryl Crow (call me a musical blasphemer, I'm used to it).

If y'all don't mind, I'll get back to the subject and answer the original question:

In my opinion: U2's Joshua Tree

Don't get me wrong, I really dig U2 and appreciate what they do, but this is not as solid an album as everyone says. They pack all the singles into the first half and we're left with a pretty weak second half. Listening to the CD pisses me off because there seems to be major volume issues. Most of it is just way too quiet. I noticed that their greatest hits CD basically has the first half of this album as the lead-off tracks to it. I would venture that my money would have been better spent buying that one. Their most recent release does kick ass, though. I really need to buy that...

wow, yous guys are putting out some realy good points. i think kid rock, his midget and creed shuld be buried right next to limp bizkit.

joni mitchell is wondrous. tapestry, def. ok, but still overrated. as for the nomination of green, no offense, but in all of music's history, there are more highly praised and worse more famous albums that deserve this award. i think you sir need a little bit o' skoolin.

Yeah she would be, but I do love me some Kid Rock so (those was jokes...ugh those were jokes).

I just don't think it's my cup of tea. I've heard a lot of the female singer/songwriters and it never interests me. I'm not opposed to it at all. If I hear a female who I think sound great then I will have no problem with liking her. It's just that outside of Sheryl Crow I haven't heard any. The little I've heard of both Carole King and Joni Mitchell lead me to believe that they are talented but I don't have the desire to actually follow up on it and buy a CD or download songs.

I have enjoyed what I've heard by Liz Phair and PJ Harvey and I would consider downloading more of their songs to see if I like them. Of course no artist compares to who is playing on Leno right now: Audiovent. They rock man.

if you like punk rock check out sleater kinney. they're the best girl band around, man. ani difranco is a kick ass guitar player and song writer. she has a reputation of being a "feminazi" but she sings songs for and about men too. she's not a hater. she rules me.
if ya like midi based music with fun sounds and hip beats, le tigre is a girl band that rocks hard as well.
of course there's fiona apple, liz phair, beth orton, and hott hott ember swift.
the donnas, bratmobile, bikini kill, lunachicks, L7, chicks on speed, heavens to betsy, and excuse 17 are some more punk oriented riot girl bands.
i also highly reccomend pj harvey; cibo matto, beth hart, and, duh, tori amos.
if you like girls voices, also check out mates of state and rainer maria.
this is my girl band gift to you, and anyone who is interested in some kick ass tunes. ph34r.gif

Well, considering kid Rock's midget (Joe C) is already dead, I guess we know where the rest of the bodies will end up.

Speaking of dead people that were hated members of the music community, did you hear that the lead singer of Drowning Pool ("let the bodies hit the floor") was found dead on his tour bus? It's weird, because I was talking to a friend on the phone about how much they suck. He said, "Yeah, I don't think we'll be hearing much from those guys a year from now". Ten minutes later, the E channel announced his death. Wow, I guess my buddy was right.

hott hott ember swift.
Did you see Ember Swift in Nashville in May? I was blown away. She's all tough and determined and a really good musician and attractive, too.
However, upon listening to the music afterwards , I was less impressed. Her songs are just all about "do it yourself and stand up and love the scene" and all that. I respect what she's doing, but sometimes she is less than subtle in her lyrics.

Good topic. I will give a nod to Carligula, for his choice (U2's 'The Joshua Tree'). I love U2, but this album is so overrated. I will also say that Joni Mitchell's 'Blue' is overrated. I just listened to it recently and found myself only *really* enjoying "River". I've always esteemed it as a great record, but when I go back and listen to it now, I find myself pretty underwhelmed.

Might I point out at this juncture that considering an album overrated is NOT necisarily saying that that album sucks. It's just saying that it's not AS GREAT as it's hyped up to be.

Having said that, my choice is: 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' by the Beatles. I like this album alot. But how many times have you seen this one touted as 'The Best Album of All Time'? It's not even my favorite Beatles album. I will concede that the production of this album was revolutionary at the time (or was it? Have you heard Pet Sounds?), but to me, the SONGS are just not up to the level of those on, say, Revolver or Abbey Road or the White Album. So much of this album is JUST production. Again, please don't think I'm dissing this album or the Beatles. It just doesn't live up to the hype.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I agree with that analysis of Sgt Pepper- I've always wondered why Revolver or Rubber Soul didn't get the credit they were due. (Interesting note: All Music Guide tells fans of Revolver to check out Smiley Smile). While listening to more British bands of the same era lately, I'm likewise beginning to wonder how revolutionary it was. I'm not straight on the exact chronology, though, so I'm not sure whether bands like the Pretty Things or Tomorrow were mimicking George Martin's production or he was following theirs.
I disagree about Joshua Tree- maybe just because I really like "In God's Country" & "One Tree Hill."
So, my nomination is Kid A. Remember the insane hype it got? And it turned out to be something that I liked in the background if I was studying, but nothing new or special or compelling. And definitely too cold to really connect with. A disappointment after how much I enjoyed OK Computer.

For a long time, my nickname for Kid A was "The Emperor's New Clothes". There was so much hype -- Hey, everybody, it's Radiohead, and they're going to show us what's cool in 2000. I think, for the most part, Radiohead has reached the status of "can do no wrong" in the eyes of music critics. No matter what they put out, people are going to say it's GENIUS.

That right there is my main reason for disliking Radiohead. Yeah I think OK Computer and everything before it is great, but the 1-2 punch of Thom Yorke (him as a person) and the constant praise/overhype that they got for Kid A makes me hate them. I dunno, I just have weird music principles and hating Radiohead is one of them for some reason.

I dont consider Kid A to be overrated. I believe it to be a very good album but not a masterpiece. Nothing will ever top OK Computer, as far as Radiohead is concerned.
