Being the music geek that I am, I was wondering if anyone else enjoyed one of the most underrated genres of music, Prog rock. Sure it's self indulgent. But it's so entertaining. This summer "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" by Genesis has been in constant rotation on my turntable at home (yes, vinyl), as well as "The Yes Album". So...who likes progressive rock? Let the backlash begin......

Rush "rule me", or however the popular phrase goes. i'm not really up with the slang these days. Many people will speak badly of Geddy Lee's voice, but i find it to be amazing. what's also amazing is that he can sing and play as well as he does at the same time. it's not as if he's just playing root notes. the man is talented. the whole band is amazing. alex lifeson is brilliant. neil peart must have the biggest set ever. i love it when he goes off on his extended solos, with more toys than most highschool percussion sections. i'm reminded of the show freaks and geeks, when the older guy sits in his basement with headphones on, trying to play along with peart. i was touched- even though he sucked.

I don't think I'm intelligent enough (or patient enough) for prog rock. Here's an example: my guiltly pleasure is Genesis. But not Peter Gabriel Genesis, oh no. "Invisible Touch"-Phil Collins Genesis. Although I remember thinking that Invisible Touch was 'fizzy boat talk show' when I was little...Phil didn't enunciate well when he sang that part...

Um...anyway everyone can get back on track with the prog rock discussion...

Anyone could potentially think putting on a symphony based on King Arthur would be a good. Only a keyboardist from Yes would think it would be a good idea to present this on ice

Long live prog rock! My favorite albums are:

Electric Light Orchestra- Face the Music
King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King
Yes- the Yes Album
Can- Tago Mago
Emerson, Lake, & Palmer- Brain Salad Surgery

Self-indulgent, overwrought, often over-produced, yes. But also inventive & tight & a wonderful bridge between psychedelic rock & arena rock. BTW, I pronounce it "prog" as in "progressive" but have heard it pronounced like "Prague". Anyone know which is correct?

I've always pronounced it as "prog". And might I just add that "In the Court of the Crimson King" is one of my favorite albums EVER. King Crimson is amazing. "Lark's Toungue in Aspic" is also very good.

did anybody else see king crimson last year at 328? it was a really great show, and i blew a perfect chance to meet mr. robert fripp himself, as well as a certain ex-bassist from led zeppelin. let's just say i shouldn't have told adrian belew's (current frontman/guitarist of king crimson) daughter that i wasn't a big crimson fan. she seemed a bit let down.

Ray - Go back and read the threads from about the first 2 months of this MB's existence - it was one long discussion of Kraut Rock - neuboy, brianeno2, exliontamer, and lawnwrangler were all big fans. I like what I've heard of Can. They were definitely very ahead of their time.

By the way, "Prague" Rock is the only way I've EVER heard it pronounced.
