punk bands?

well, my favorite band of all-time has always been the clash, even though i dont listen to them as much as i used to(and i wouldnt even really call them "punk"...their first album is "punk" but "combat rock"? i dont think so).......and of course i love bands like The Jam, Television, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, The Buzzcocks, Pere Ubu, etc.

i was always a big fan of "pre-punk" bands like MC5, The Monks, The Stooges, The Velvet Undergound, The Modern Lovers, Rocket from the Tombs, The Flamin' Groovies......

the dead milkmen rule. your mention of that book got me thinking about "our band could be your life", which got me thinking about husker du.

I never listened to punk much. I have somewhat of an appreciation for it, but it just never moved me. I do dig on some Ramones like everyone else (in fact, I'm listening to some right now).

I'd also like to add to the list earlier work by Suicidal Tendencies and Faith No More (Chuck Mosely era).

I know next to nothing about punk aside from the obvious, but the DEAD MILKMEN FUCKING RULE ME! I remember the first mix tape my fiance ever gave me had a DM song on it about eating pork sausage & I played it in the rental car on a family vacation, not realizing that it also had lyrics about pussy on it. They thought very highly of him after that. Classics include Beach Party Vietnam, The Thing that only Eats Hippies, Bleach Boys and, my all-time favorite, Stuart. My first email ever was gorrillagirl@aol.com

i really think the misfits should be right up there with the ramones, sex pistols and the clash. they're criminally underappreciated.
i just recently started listening to mission of burma. "that's when i reach for my revolver" sounds alot better when it is not sung by moby.

Speaking of punk bands and goofy songs... anyone remember Stormtroopers of Death? THey had a song called Jimi Hendrix or something like that, that was nothing but the opening to Purple HAze... the "dant dant ...dant dant...dant dant...) then they say "Your dead"... freaking hilarious

Hmmm...a few I didn't see mentioned...

UK Subs
Stiff Little Fingers
Wire
The Fall
Mission of Burma
Reagan Youth
X

and the Distillers for good measure. I really can't get into new punk but this band has shown alot of promise. I'd also add Dead Moon to the mix for new bands that aren't terrible and cliche.

There are alot of great punk bands that have incorporated traditional celtic/Irish/Scottish tunes into their repertoire. The Real McKenzies (check out "Loch Lemond"), Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys fall into this vein. Good stuff.

yes indeed... I love that album to death. in fact i found a copy of that on blue marble vinyl just this past weekend. it's such a great record, although I like Answer That And Stay Fashionable slightly better because of the song Cereal Wars.

I would say that my favorites include The Descendents, GBH, Stiff Little Fingers, The Vandals, H20, Fugazi and The Pinkerton Thugs.

i always say that the misfits are underappreciated but that too many people enjoy listening to their music. i know, it sounds contradictory... I just think that less people should like them more. I think a lot of people listen to them just because they are the misfits, not because they really enjoy the music.

and new misfits suck ass.
