TOPIC: Q Special Edition: Oasis
Posted  Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 11:09 PM

So I'm at Hastings looking for a job application when I get magnetically pulled towards the magazines. I then find the Q Special Edition "Ten Years of Rock N Roll Mayhem: OASIS" magazine. Ahhh such a wonderful book! So much swearing! So much bashing! So much Oasis! Yes it was 10 dollars but for 146 pages of Oasis, I'd sell at least 1.5 of my fingers.

This is just beautiful. So much reading to be done....

They did one of those about Oasis?!?

Let's see here, we've done the Beatles, Dylan, and REM. What legend can we do next? How about Oasis! Don't get me wrong, I love Oasis, but they DO NOT belong in the same category as those others. Are there really 146 pages to be written about Oasis? Those Q Special Editions are cool, though. I read the Dylan one and felt like I could teach a college class when I was through with it.

What is everyone's favorite British music publication? I think that mine has to be Q, though I also really like Mojo and Select. NME and Melody Maker are toilet paper.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

i disagree. i think that there is easily enough to fill 146 pages, and i definitely think that they are important enough (and not just because i'm a huge fan). they are probably the most significant band of the last decade aside from nirvana- maybe not in the US, but internationally. They top charts all over the world and sell out show after show. they also inspired a lot of kids to pick up guitars. I think that they would regain some of their past US success with the current album if the bums at sony would lift a finger to promote it.

I'll have to agree with Damon's disagreeing. There were also Q special editions for R.E.M. and Radiohead (IMO, Oasis deserve it more than Radiohead). I definitely think that The Hindu Times could have cracked the modern rock stations if Sony would have put some muscle behind it. But then again, I really don't care if they ever become huge in America again. After the super-lack of promotion Who Feels Love? and Sunday Morning Call got, I just stopped caring. I just wish they would do more extensive tours and get closer to Nashville....

Are you kidding? R.E.M. and Radiohead were/are groundbreaking bands, and ORIGINAL bands. Oasis (once again, I love 'em) are not original. In the past, they have written some great pop songs, and they have kept Britain (and in 96-98, America) entertained with their rougeish, cocaine'n'lager-feuled buffoonery. They were a great rock'n'roll band, but please don't try to tell me they've ever been revolutionaries.

As for Sony not promoting their records, maybe if they made another good album, Sony would spend more cash promoting it. They could hire Johnny Cochran and sue Sony like Michael Jackson is doing.

well, i must agree that oasis are far from being revolutionary in their music. however, in terms of pop culture in england, they were massive trend setters and constant news makers. still today, they are in the news on a regular basis, and most times by no fault of their own (granted, liam punching sweden's most famous comedian may have been his fault). i guess i just find cocaine'n'lager fueled buffoonery to be more significant than most people. i will admit, i can definitely see your point... maybe... but i must respectfully disagree.

as far as sony not promoting the album...

i have had the new album for months now, and i must say, it isn't bad. if you put it next to most of the year's biggest sellers, i dare say it would bend them over and aim for penetration. nickelback, puddle of mudd, and all that nonsense has nothing on oasis. sony is a huge part of the problem. for an album to make the top 5 in nearly every industrialized country except the US is stupid. with no promotion it managed the top 25. i have to think that it would do better had sony made an effort.

i might note that noel has always been strange about what songs he picks for albums and which he makes b-sides of. there are a few b-sides this time around that should have easily topped some of the album tracks. this couldn't have helped anything.

Sure, Liam is a tad immature (and that was a tad bit of an understatement), but I consider Noel to be very intelligent at least in the ways of common sense. I think he conducts himself well in interviews, knows the business, knows music and is very witty. I'm also sure that Andy and Gem aren't dimwits. And then there is my favorite member, poor Alan who never gets a word in edgewise. Bollocks.

I totally think REM should have one. I am a definite fan of REM's. But Radiohead. To me, Radiohead doesn't have the universal quality that Oasis does. Noel doesn't dress his music up and try to be different or anythign that he or his band isn't. It's just rock music. Radiohead...I just don't like them. Yeah they're intellectual and yeah I'm sure they're brilliant but there is just something about the way...I dunno...to me Radiohead seems to exude this "you bloody better be worthy of listening to our records and you better have an IQ upwards of 150." I think, that while Oasis were/are not in anyway as revolutionary as Radiohead, they have definitely earned their place in British Rock Royalty due to the mass hysteria, the attitude, the anthems, and the songs that (while not requiring a thesaurus) make people feel good.

Then again, Radiohead and Oasis are too different to even compare. blink.gif

True that, my friend, true that. We are in a bit of a funk as a nation, musically, aren't we? I haven't actually heard Heathen Chemistry yet, but I've heard 'The Hindu Times' and it does nothing for me. HOWEVER, I have heard from reliable sources that this album is the best since Morning Glory. So I have decided to buy it.

In reality, why Sony isn't spending on Oasis is that the kind of music that they're making just isn't popular right now. Labels follow the pop charts like struggling lawyers follow ambulences.

I ordered fish and chips for dinner tonight, damon, in honor of you. Mmmm.

What's your favorite Oasis single? Mine is either Wonderwall (w/ Swamp Song, Round Are Way, & The Masterplan) or Whatever (w/ It's Good to be Free, Half the World Away, & Slide Away) or D'YKnowWhatIMean (w/ Stay Young, Heroes, & Angel Child).

I would be satisfied if Oasis got the same amount of publicity that the Hives, White Stripes, and the Strokes are getting. All I'm asking for is The Hindu Times video at 1:00 am on MTV. Is that so bad?

And I have to say that Just Getting Older (liked it since the SOTSOG demos) and Idler's Dream are better than (Probably) All In The Mind and even Little By Little. I haven't been able to digest Stop Crying Your Heart Out's b-sides yet.

I remember back in 98 when Acquiesce was a quite popular song on KDF (pre-country). It topped the top 8 at 8 a couple times and stayed on the chart for a while. Go Let It Out also did well on Lightning 100. But this time around...zip in the ways of promotion.

oasis are part of modern england. even the british army used oasis songs in recruiting commercials. they are everywhere.

My fave Oasis albums in order are Morning Glory, SOTSOG, Definitely Maybe, Heathen Chemistry and Be Here Now. I think I'm one of the few who really loved SOTSOG. But favorite single? That's really hard...I listened to the All Around The World single on an almost daily basis sophomore year while getting ready for school. But Wonderwall has amazing B-Sides and so does Whatever. The only one that I don't really enjoy would have to be Shakermaker.

flashbax is such a great b-side. i love that song.

i think i would rate the albums:

1. Definitely Maybe
2. (What's the story) morning glory
3. Be Here Now
4. Heathen Chemistry
5. sotsoog

*if the masterplan counted, i would probably put it #1. i think it's brilliant.

believe it or not, i really liked sotsog (minus little james). i guess i'm just a big fan of be here now. HC would be higher than Be Here Now, but some of liam's songs don't do it for me. still, songbird is so much better than little james. i really dig that song.

digsy~ have you heard shout it out loud or thank you for all the good times? i think that they both belong on the album.

It is really hard for me to rate the albums because after Morning Glory (the album that set my musical taste in stone so many years ago), all the other albums are really strong and all have gems on them. I was listening to Be Here Now in my car today and I realized how much I liked Magic Pie and The Girl In The Dirty Shirt. I really do go through phases. SOTSOG somehow managed to blow me away in terms of lyrics and music. Gas Panic! is my favorite Oasis song ever and I used Fuckin' In The Bushes in as many school projects as possible.

Heathen Chemistry is also solid. Hindu Times, Force of Nature, A Quick Peep, She Is Love, Better Man, Stop Crying Your Heart Out, they are all top songs. It is a solid album.

And I may have cried a tad. When I got it. Tears of joy...um...that may be too much info... rolleyes.gif

i can remember the exact night...

i had started downloading it as soon as i found out it was leaked (cheers to the madferret), but i forgot about it during supper...

immediately after supper, i went to my friend's room to get drunk. when i stumbled back into my room, songbird was playing. i was in awe. i sat my drunk ass down on my bed and listened to it over and over. i must confess, i was moved to tears (but i was drunk).

i mostly agree with your b side rankings, although i would probably have ranked going nowhere a little higher, as well as listen up. cheers!

by the way, i just realized that the new b-side shout it out loud is destined to be on the real world. it's perfect for one of those moments when somebody gets dumped over the phone...

Does Noel still use the Union Jack guitar?

i saw it in a picture recently, so i know he still has it, however, he basically uses a les paul and a telecaster on stage these days. maybe he'll bring it back someday. from what i've seen of him lately, he has started to bring back the cool semi-hollows like the dots, casinos, and es-335s. maybe this is a sign in favor of the good ole union jack.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.
