TOPIC: Radiohead Listening Party @ Belcourt
Posted  Monday, June 9, 2003 at 1:00 AM
Post 1 of 28
In the vein of the White Stripes/Wilco media ensemble put on by Grimey's and the Belcourt, comes the Radiohead listening party/documentary showing. I have talked to several board members that are going. I think it starts at 9 or so @ the Belcourt. Naturally, the new album goes on sale at midnight and the show is free. At this point, I'm just wondering who isn't going.

for those that haven't yet seen the radiohead documentary (keep in mind that I am a HUGE fan of radiohead), it's nothing more than bullshit posturing and mastubatory excess. It's like someone said "hey, i wonder how I can stroke Thom Yorke's cock for an hour and a half" and decided to do a movie about how serious and intense (notice how the italics make it more intense?) they really are.

speaking of, my friend sheronda and i were at Underground Sounds (it's a great little record shop here in louisville) and because she bought so many albums last night, they threw in Hail To The Theif for free and a few days early!.. It's my new favorite place to go record shopping..

I've heard the album and seen the documentary. For the record, I'm a big fan of both (I think Meeting People is Easy is a great film when you're in a particular mood). Whether or not I'll be there is up in the air right now. Maybe. Maybe not. If I go, it will be for entirely social reasons...

It's been a long, long time since I've disagreed with a post more, but I won't argue. Don't feel like it and of course you're entitled to this opinion (even though it's so wrong. Heh...)

well, i was a bit harsh in my post. I just really didn't like it. Maybe I chose a bad time to watch it or something, but it really did not hold my interest.

I've always found it interesting to watch, mostly because I love Radiohead. But whining about the side-effects of fame (which is the whole theme of Meeting People is Easy) was so 1993.

That's my major beef with it... It screams "They're so put-upon... Look at how put-upon they are... see this guy recognize Thom at a bar? he doesn't like that..." I would have much rather seen interviews discussing their musical process, their past, etc... but, alas.

Hmm, I didn't see any whining. I didn't see Thom yapping to the camera about how much he hates the media. They did let the documentary do the talking and it demonstrated, brilliantly, just how crazy the world's media can be with the "world's greatest rock band". The constant photo sessions, hounding fans, constant interviews, constant taglines or whatever you call it when you say "Hey, this is Soandso from Someband and you're listening to...", and so on... how that can all build to a fevered pitch that would make anybody, 1997 or not, literally explode.

This was the very tour where Thom literally lost it and nearly killed himself. This was the tour that nearly ended the band. If it weren't for REM and Michael Stipe's influence over the band and specifically Thom things would have ended (and some of you would probably have liked that seeing what they've released since). So taking this into mind, if this documentary was a happy-go-lucky overview of the OK Computer tours than it would have been a complete and utter lie. It would be like asking any documentary covering the final weeks of Kurt Cobain's life to be a crowd pleaser.

Well, maybe I approached it improperly. For one, I assumed, apparently incorrectly, that this movie was a documentary of radiohead as a band, not just of the ok computer tour. But there was hardly any narration or direction to the piece either... It leaves you wondering "what the hell is going on?" or "and the point of this is?" in many places. I also expected to learn something about the band by the time I finished watching. I did not.

and i don't mean that thom or anyone else in radiohead themselves whined... but that the movie portrayed the media so bastardly and the band as constantly worn and burnt out... It just left me feeling if they didn't like it so much, they were in a position where they had all the bargaining chips... they were at the pinnacle of success and without them the management, a&r, the label, wouldn't have it... so they could have called the shots if they were that unhappy... that's just how i felt at the end. i was thinking and feeling "don't expect me to feel sorry for you."

i've also only seen it once, so maybe a secondary viewing would be called for.

True, it's not a traditional piece with a narrator and storyline. So I can see how you might enter into the film thinking what you did. Another point is the film was not the vision of the band but of the director (Grant Gee I think?) and he decided to make the film about the onslaught that tour brought them. And the name is apt for this reason, or ironic, or whatever. But I can see your point.

I understand that it might have been a hard time for them - touring the world and getting paid millions of dollars to play music for two hours every night. But however strenuous it might have been, I think that they just came off looking like miserable bastards in that documentary. But maybe they are miserable bastards.

Yeah, apparently they, or at least Thom, was that miserable. I don't get it either, I mean, it seems like such a great life but apparently it doesn't agree with everybody (again, Cobain). You can enter into the equation drug abuse or mental problems, but those are obviously real factors that cause people to interpret situations, like media frenzies, differently than you are I might. Filmmakers live for this sort of "character flaw" from the subjects they follow around.

even when you are doing what you love and what you've dreamed about, stress is a factor that will, at times, be approaching you. perhaps he is one of those people who is plagued by what he loves. maybe his vision for his music is alot to handle. some musicians love to play their music and that has always been their desire, but frustrations can arise in them because their ideas and creativity aren't coming out to the full extent, and they know it, but no matter how hard they try, it's being stubborn, and there is a block. so, you never know, maybe he seems like he is miserable because he is frustrated or was dissatisfied at the time of the filming with what he has created. not to mention, no matter how enjoyable playing music is for them, they live a life of instability by being gone from home and normality all the time. touring will do something "not right" to you, although it is fun.

unfortunately, i got turned away from this premier, because all of you jerks got there before me. that's what i get for enjoying my mellow mushroom a little bit too long....

I know they let more people in around 10pm after they played the album and before they showed the documentary. As far as I know, everyone got in. Of course, this doesn't help you now. Sorry.

I left early and decided to buy the album today at Tower for TEN BUCKS! Boo-Yeah! Sorry, Grimey.
