The album, which was recorded in Oxfordshire and Los Angeles, will be released on June 9. Of the 14 tracks on the record, only two, 'Backdrifts' and 'The Gloaming' are unfamiliar to hardcore fans - the rest were premiered on the band's recent tour of Spain and Portugal.

'We Suck Young Blood'
'The Gloaming'
'There There'

I just got that from my w.a.s.t.e. mailing list...i have to say, that's about the only helpful thing it's sent me in forever. usually, it's just a tease in the subject, saying "tourdates," then I look and it's in Japan.

Yeah, a while ago, BrianW posted this awesome link.
But, as you probably know by now, ya can't download them songs no more! But while them links on that site was still up, I downloaded it all, and burnt it onta a SeeDee. And uh listent to it. N listent to it. N listent to it...

My personal opinion (based on hearing live recordings of the songs) is that this new material sucks, or at best is no better than Amnesiac/Kid A (which, if you read this message board regularly, you know I'm not a big fan of). It's surely not "a return to the rock." Phil sings lead vocals on one of the songs, for God's sake. Keep in mind, I haven't heard the record, only the live recordings.

You know how they say that when you take acid, you can never go back to seeing the world the same way as you saw it before? Like you can never go home again? Well, my friends, I think that Radiohead have taken the proverbial acid, and they will never be going back home again.

But I guess that's just a matter of opinion, now isn't it? I'll still buy the album, tho, because I'm a sucker.

Gooch? I've never heard that one before. I find this very interesting because I went to high school with a guy whose last name was Gooch and everyone sort of treated him that way.

Man, that bitch definitely was a Gooch. I would like to commend Buckley on introducing this new term to my world. It will be used with haste, as to keep from wearing it out quickly.

I love "There, There", at least the two live versions I've heard of it. I'm not sure how it'll all turn out until I hear the studio tracks, obviously, but I'm hopeful. I'm more optimistic than you are JC.

For what it's worth:

Filter Previews the First Four Tracks from the New Radiohead Album
by staff | 03.20.2003

This week Filter had the distinct pleasure of hearing 4 tracks from the new Radiohead album, which is tentatively scheduled for release in the US on June 10th. As we sat and listened all we could say after was "wow". Our first impression of the tracks we heard was that they are simply amazing. The songs were very reminiscent of OK Computer but, of course, going to a higher level like only Radiohead could do.

"There There" will be the first single from the album being released on May 19, 2003 in Japan and May 26 in the UK. The Japanese single will contain 5 tracks while there will most likely be two CD singles for the UK. The title of the record still remains somewhat of a mystery with titles like 2+2=5 and Are You Listening being rumored as the favorites.

Check back here for more details on everything Radiohead as we eagerly anticipate the release of the new album.

I don't know why, but my expectations are low. I know I'm not hip enough or whatever, but Amnesiac continues to bore the hell out of me, no matter how many times I try to force myself to get into it. I guess I just don't want to be disappointed again.

I like Pablo Honey... There, I said it.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

I do feel that its an unfair judgement, and you're well aware of it, so I'm not bringing it up except to try and instill some optimism in you. Look at the evolution of songs like True Love Waits for God's sake and you learn that Radiohead has an interesting way of reworking material and completely changing it. The less you like the songs as they were live, the more probable it is that you'll like the record... well, that's a lie, but you get me.

I'm pumped for "I Will", a great song whose previously recorded form, sans original vocals, made it onto Amnesiac reversed as the backing to Like Spinning Plates, another great example of live Radiohead differing from studio Radiohead.

But I'm super-pumped because I literally love every spare instant from The Bends on.

Amen. There seems to be a spirit of anti-KidAandAmnesiac-ism going on here. That really surprised me. Kid A and Amnesiac are my favorites. I think they've gotten better with each album.

That's just what the popular music media / quasi-indie hipsters on your block want you to believe. Remember that story, "The Emperor's New Clothes?" That's what's happening here.

For the record, I do realize what Radiohead is trying to do: kill their fame. Did you see Meeting People is Easy? That documentary is 94 minutes of bitching about the fame that OK Computer brought them.

"Okay," they said, "let's see how you frat brothers and People magazine readers like this." It's like Neil Young said after he made Harvest and experienced worldwide fame: "'Heart of Gold' put me in the middle of the road. But travelling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch."

And so Radiohead went to the ditch. But like Howard Beale in Network, the crazier they have gotten, the higher the ratings have gone.

Nah, I don't care for that stuff either. Actually, I think Pablo Honey is their worst album. Let's face it, Radiohead has made two really great, no make that INCREDIBLE albums and three above average to good albums. Will I still always buy their albums because of those two incredible ones? Yeah, probably. I think they still have another masterpiece in them.

jamie, I think there are only two topics that I've ever disagreed with you on. Live Wilco, post YHF, is one. Radiohead post OK Computer is another. While I won't be as bold as to say that they've topped OK Computer, I'd probably still have to call Amnesiac my "favorite" album of theirs, and Idioteque my favorite song. Motion Picture Soundtrack, Fog, You and Whose Army, and Pyramid Song are among my favorite songs ever. Do you honestly allege that all of this is because I've fallen under the influence of some "indie-hipsters" that you've been immune to the effects of? Or do you think that maybe, just maybe, the band is going places that you don't especially care for? My grandmother doesn't like The Beatles much after Help! but it doesn't mean that they suddenly began making lesser music, just that they lost some audience and gained some in other places. Some were fans for both periods, like many of us for Radiohead. Bands change, but it is quite harsh to allege what you have up there, more to those of us that like the music than to the band.

Well, I hope that is not being honestly alleged, because if so, it's not a very good observation. I certainly did not hang out with any "indie-hipsters" whenever I first listened to Kid A or Amnesiac, and I loved them then and still do. Not everybody falls for "The Emperor's New Clothes" scam. And, please don't yell at me now because I expressed an honest opinion. These words are not meant to offend.

When I first got Amnesiac I couldn't turn it off, and I still think it's an excellent album. There's plenty of rock on the album (knives out and I might be wrong are both great). They albums are not as weird and shitty as people make them out to be. As for tracks like pyramid song, I think Thom's attempt to bring some Warp Records feel into the band is great, and it is not necessarily for the sole purpose of turning people off. After all, why would someone buy the Warp Records catalog just to turn fans off? On the contrary, it's because Richard D. James is pretty damn cool.

hail to the thief is a mixed bag, but the good parts are the best radiohead has been since 1997. some of it ("2+2=5") stands up to the bends/ok computer. it also has alot of dry points. i like laptop radiohead as much as i like guitar radiohead, but it seems like the songs done with electronics on this album aren't very good. this is about 1/3 of the album, unfortunately. the good news is that on about 6-7 of these songs, the melody and emotion of earlier radiohead have returned in full force. the lyrics are great too. in the end it's not much of a cohesive album but a collection of songs, some that are incredible and some that are pretty shitty.

Following three solid listens, I'm definitely a fan of what the boys from Britain are up to here... definitely not too far off of the tone of Amnesiac, but with more emphasis on the rock side of Amnesiac and less on the electronic side (with some notable exceptions). To call it a perfection of what they were doing a few years ago would be premature, but it's definitely a possibility as far as I'm concerned.
