I just learned that REM will release a greatest hits album sometime in 2003.
Just thought I would pass along the news.

Interesting. In my opinion, to really do justice to their vast (and incredible) catalog, they should make it a double album. I can't think of any combination of songs that would fit on just one disc that wouldn't leave out some vital tracks. Actually, I think that the best way to do it would be to do like U2 did and release them separately, and with a disc of b-sides paired with each. I know that they already had Eponymous for only the older greatest hits, but I think maybe their choices for the track listing might be different now.

REM on tour again? Okay. I'd probably go see them again, but the last REM show I saw (Monster tour) was one of the most underwhelming rock concerts I've ever been to.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I too think that it should be a two disc set. however, i am interested as to whether or not it will be a compilation of their time at warner bros. or it will be a combination of their IRS/Warner Bros. material. i've done some research and have found that if it is going to be a strictly "singles" compilation, then a double disc set will be a neccessity seeing as how they have released 47 singles over the course of their career.

I am excited about the greatest hits compilation, if only because it said that there shall be a tour coinciding with it. I've never seen R.E.M. live, and it is honestly on the top of my things I have to do before I die list. They have been my all time favorite band since I was in fifth grade. I am willing to take a plane or even walk.

On a some what related note, is anyone in the fanclub and if so... have you recieved your single yet??

yeah to comment on jamiecarroll's post...

i once set out to make my friend a mix of REM songs...ONE CD that is...

yeah...no...
it ended up being 2 cd's and i just ended up splitting it up...my IRS favorites on one....and the WB favorites on the other.

Same here. Exciting news.

I for one don't know what I think it should be. I've made my sister a "singles" mix cd (with "Leave" added for good measure and because it is my favorite). I don't like it as much as I could, because the best songs in my opinion go unreleased. Obviously many always feel this way, but I think with REM its even more the case. Like "Half a World Away." Simply an amazing song, easily Out of Time's best.

I've heard that some fans are upset about the band releasing a greatest hits album. Apparently, some people interpret it as a sign that Warner Bros. no longer sees them as current creators of hit music and are raiding their catalog to recoup some of their investment. If that's true, it makes me very sad.

It's conceivable that the IRS stuff could be included on the greatest hits CD. Around the time that Time-Warner merged with AOL, they made some other acquisitions that gave them control of Capitol Records, who own the rights to the IRS recordings. (I think it was Capitol... maybe it was EMI... who cares... aren't all record companies owned by the same guy now?) Anyway, as much as I love the IRS stuff, I doubt it will appear on a new greatest hits album since most of it can be obtained on Eponymous.

In other R.E.M. news, TF's favorite album, Document, will be released in DVD-A format next month. The disc will have all of the tracks mixed in Dolby 5.1 surround sound and include videos for "Finest Worksong," "ItEotWAWKI(aIFF)," and "The One I Love." Reveal and AftP are already available on DVD-A.

Peter Buck even talks about how Warners wants to turn them into an oldies band. Look at their latest time on MTV Unplugged--they played songs from the new album, but almost all of them were cut! A greatest hits album is just another ploy to put REM to bed before their time.

I think with 1997's R.E.M. In the Attic, there really is no need to go back to the IRS years. Why bother upping the price of this disc just for songs that you already have four mixes of anyway?? Throw some decent b-sides on the greatest hits from the Warner years and put it out.

Isn't their new album going to be out in the spring anyway??
REM needs to tour. They need to come to Nashville.
