I heard that the "Loan Ranger" was investigated because he was actually a money-laundering front for some Las Vegas mafia group. His commercials were quite amusing, though.

It's very common for the bands that play Memphis in May to also play River Stages. Wilco would make perfect sense for both.

I have nothing to back this up.

i've noticed that nashville gets shafted as far as the may music festival thing is concerned...memphis, birmingham and atlanta always get better acts at their may festival thingys (is atlanta's called midtown music or did i make that up?)

best group ever to come to river stages: travis

also it seems to be the touring circuit for slightly washed-up older bands. and to steal your infamous quote, i have nothing to back this up.

Atlanta's is called "Music Midtown" and it is the same weekend as Riverstages (and Memphis in May). LOTS of bands play all three. Personally, I'll be going to Music Midtown this year (thanx MikeD!). I don't know who is playing it yet.

Ben Folds Five is probably the best band that I've ever seen at River Stages. Travis would be a close second. I really regret that I didn't get down there in time to see Dylan in 2001, or care enough about them at the time to see Wilco in 1999.

I've only gone one year and that was the Bob Dylan year. Since I'm not a fan of Bob Dylan, I would have gladly traded my place in that pot/hippie/dreadlocked grid of death with anyone.

I went because, at the time, I wanted to see the Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, the Wallflowers, and Steve Earle (who actually I Want Elvis wanted to see but it was well worth it). I think it's cool that I have seen Bob Dylan, but since I know about 1% of his music and have no desire to listen to him, it wasn't as fun for me as it was for a Dylan Superfan. But hey, I have something to complain about now so that's good. ph34r.gif

Yeah, the best performance I've ever seen at Riverstages was definitely Travis.
I would honestly have to say that the second best was probably Bjorn Again, an ABBA tribute. They were very entertaining and did a fine job. And, yes, I think I would rate them above Dylan on my list, entertainment level-wise. Sounds crazy, but I'm not a big Bob Dylan fan. It's nice that I've seen him, but I was less than impressed.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

I think that I'm partly responsible for Digsy's bad time. I like Bob Dylan, and I thought that it would be really nice to be up close. So I made him do it, and looking back on that now... we should have stayed in the back.

I agree that Travis was the highlight of all the Riversatges I've attended.

I also agree that Travis was the highlight of all the riverstages that i have been to.....i squealed when they played "blue flashing lights". i really wish that they would come back to nashville.

and i second sexysadie's comment about Bjorn Again; they were fucking great.

Least favorite riverstages act: crazy town. i remember that someone blew fire on stage durng their set....that was the most exciting thing during their set.

I gotta be the music snob here. Yes, Dylan is not for everyone. But he is required listening (and enjoyment) for any songwriter. Period. The understatement of the year was on this thread: "Dylan's made some good music." (can't remember who it was). Saying you don't like Dylan is, to me, saying you don't like Shakespeare.

Granted, he has made mostly terrible records and sucked live for the last 25 years.

True that, teddyfred. Dylan put out some really bad stuff in the 80s and 90s. But from what I can tell, he has had new life breathed into him since Time Out of Mind. I hear that his live shows are actually pretty good right now.

I saw him the last time he was at municipal and it was god awful. I'm embarassed to say that in my old age, I can't remember when that show was. I remember hanging out with the features at the show, though. The show at municipal in 99 with Brian Setzer was great, I'll admit.

Come to think of it, I can't remember how many times i've seen Dylan.

in 1752, benji franklin scampered into a rainstorm with a kite and a key to take the phenomenon of lightning and prove that man could harness and exploit the source of power. as franklin is to electricity and all of its subsequent manifestations, so dylan is to the song. so shakespeare is to the written word, so pet sounds is to recording, so sisqo is to the thong.

i don't give a shit if his shows are bad now, to know the descendants but negate the ancestor is blaphemous. let us not forget, little children, we all came from somewhere.

Oh, how I despise Joe Cocker. If I do go to Riverstages, I might have to leave the Nashville Metropolitan area during his act to protect my ears from awful Beatles covers.

That would be funny to see Mr. Hosier there.

Yeah, I was there, too. If I remeber correctly, Green Day was on the small stage when Joe Cocker was on the main stage. I was pretty pissed about missing that. It really sucked that they didn't have a way to let people know when certain bands were on certain stages. Oh well, at least I got to see a lot of boobs.

Wilco? You'd better have a good bit of caffeine beforehand if you're going to see them in concert. Zzzzzzz. They still make great records, though.

I won't be at River Stages. So let's get to the real question: who's playing Glastonbury this year? So far, REM, Radiohead, the Polyphonic Spree. I hear that the Rolling Stones might play this year. Hmmm...

Knowing how the higher-ups think, according to the two previous Riverstages that I have attended, Wilco would be forced to play in the middle of the afternoon. They have no sense of mood-setting when they schedule some of that stuff. I know Josh Rouse played in the middle of the afternoon last year, if that tells you anything. Wilco should be played as the sun is going down or something. "I have nothing to back this up." (Sorry Carl & Mike)

Radiohead, Björk, REM, Coldplay, Underworld, Metallica, Queens Of The Stone Age, Moby, and Massive Attack.

Def Leppard is gonna be at Riverstages! I will enjoy this, because it will bring back fond memories of high school and music that I used to like. I will also enjoy this for the sheer number of 80's hair-band groupies who should now be well into their thirties. Buddy Guy was also announced. Finally, everyone's wish has been granted, as John Mayer will make his umpteenth Riverstages appearance.

awesome! Dancin in the District Titans style- what more could I ask for?!?! I too will be happy if they charge this year,,, that should weed out a few of the people who weren't there for the music and endded up talking the whole time. I really hope the Features play there again this year! Earlier today I e-mailed the company that puts on the shows and told them how much I hoped they would be there again this year. unfortunately, it isn't sounding too hopefull for this year Just got a response saying:

"Thank you for the inquiry. Our line-up for Coca-Cola's Dancin' in the District 2003 should be announced in mid-April.

The Features were great at our July 3 show last year, sorry that you missed it.

Thank you,
Tania

Actually, I was being sarcastic. I think the best thing about DID is that it's always been free. I've been going since high school (~8 years) and even though they've gone back and forth on the age and drinking policies, this is going to upset me to see such a drastic change in a Nashville tradition. I've never thought the venue was very condusive to my favorite local acts, so I admittedly went more for the laid-back atmosphere and social scene. I think the proposed changes will ruin that.

There are some shows where it really sucks to have people there for the wrong reasons. At an outdoor music festival like DitD, though, they're OK because there's so much space that they don't get in your way. I think it's silly for them to charge. Maybe I'll protest by climbing over the fence.

Yeah, so if this is true, I'll never go to DitD again (unless the Features or Blur are playing). Not that I really went that often any more anyway. I went to 2 last year - Cake and the Features, and in both cases, I only went to see that band, then left. The fact that it is right downtown and on the river is one of the only redeeming things about it. But I bet it'll be so much fun baking to death in the Coliseum parking lot. And I'm sure the downtown businesses love the move across the river. Oh, and charging $3 is lame, too.

OK, so back to the topic at hand. I found out that Dylan is playing at Music Midtown in AtLanta, along with every band on both the Nashville and Memphis lineups, and every R&B act currently on MTV. Check it out:

I've heard many reports of 'Jay' sightings, so it's quite likely. I've also heard that he is often in search of / partaking in some sort of drug. So, if you know any drug dealers, there's a good chance they could arrange an introduction.

I, too, am hoping the rumor of DitD being in the Coliseum is just a that, a rumor. I think the amount of high school skanks and nasty oglers (which are just a part of the experience to me) attending will go down, and older Titans fans will go just to get a free seat in their Mecca. That and the stadium sound bouncing around everywhere coupled with it being less personal will make it not as fun to go to.

I'll second that prediction. Where is the charm of hanging out in a parking lot in the dead of summer (or any time of year, for that matter).

I think that the quality of the bands has actually stayed pretty consistent through the years, though I couldn't confirm this without seeing some records.

I think that the biggest thing that's changed has been the size. The crowds have gotten much larger. I sound like such an old fogey, but I remember when I would go to DitD in like 1996, and the crowd would be almost completely contained in the park itself. Now DitD sprawls out over a third of downtown. Also, the crowd has gotten younger and more "geographically diverse" - people drive in from like Shelbyville or Clarksville or Columbia to go to DitD now (which I guess is good for our city's economy).

Anyway, I just don't see the appeal of having it across the river. And I don't think as many people will go. And I think that 2003 will be the final year.

I'd be willing to bet that fewer people attend at the coliseum as well. I'm excited about it, just b/c of how much I like the titans. However it will not be as comfortable and the riverfront park just looks like a cool concert area. There's just something about multilayer grass seating that makes me happy.

I'm prolly gonna draw in some nice preconceptions about myself by saying this,,, but I've camped out for tickets at the stadium the past two years and the parking lot isn't that bad cool.gif It's especially entertaining at night b/c the metro canine unit practices drug raids on the lot. Alot of highschoolers use the lot as their make-out spots as well. I will say that alot of people have characterized Bud Adams as a greedy old bastard... nice to see he isn't charging like crazy for the use of their facilities.

by the way, I now have permanent issue's with whoever made the comment about burning the stadium down biggrin.gif

now i will agree with you on that point, there are some really cool stadiums and arenas going up these days, the gaylord entertainment center was built before the stadium and it looks much cooler. our stadium blows chuncks compared to other nfl stadiums

and while the city did build the place, somehow the titans organization still can get some money for events there if they choose, I don't think that it's right.

nice to see he isn't charging like crazy for the use of their facilities.

That isn't their facility... it's mine, and anyone else that pays property taxes in this city. I think they should have more events there. And for what it's worth, it is an eyesore... with all the cool retro styled stadiums going up, why the hell did they build that monstrosity of design?
If the Bellsouth Tower is going to be here than anything can. I don't think the stadium is that bad, have you seen the new seattle football facility?

Not me, I've always hated the whole thing, but have treated it as a necessary evil for seeing some bands I like.

Long live Uptown Mix.

i've been very impressed with the acts uptown mix has brought in over the past few yrs (steve earle, wilco, flaming lips, BIG STAR!). however I had much contempt for it before the advent of my 21st yr
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

Speaking of, has this year's line-up for Uptown Mix been named? It's among the last chances for the Lips to get back in good graces with me.

The Flaming Lips will not ever play the Uptown Mix again. Sorry, Ya. They've blown up.

Well, at least they blew up while I'm pissed at them. I'll piss on the flames of their crashed airplane, buncha no-talent Beck-backin' hacks.

Not "blown up" like that, but rather "blown up" as a past tense version of "blowing up," which is slang for "quickly becoming extremely popular." Like, you know, being in Intel commercials, and hanging with Justin Timberlake, and having every music critic in the world stroke your album like it was Sgt. Pepper's.

Gotcha. But since I'm pissed at them, I wish they would blow up.

It has occurred to me that they will probably skip Nashville since 328 is apparently closed, leaving no appropriately sized venue for them to play.

Shut the hell up JamieCarroll. Justin Timberlake can hang out with whoever he wants to. You music snob.

you're more likely to see jay (jason mewes) slumming around nashville, as he's in town shooting some movie. my old boss from cd warehouse is apparently really good friends with him now. maybe next movie is "jay and cd warehouse boss strike back."
for the record, jay's left, i do believe...the movie got canned or something and i think he's back in jersey.
on a side note, i'm really really really thrilled about aimee mann...the magnolia soundtrack made me a fan and i've never seen her live.
and i won't even begin on the happiness i have about everclear:D
right you are, ken!

"In the can," I think, means "completed," as in, "the tape has been taken out of the recording device and stored in a canister." Or, as in, "Ryan Adams has 9 albums in the can."

"Canned," I think, means "aborted," as in "the tape has been ripped from the recoding device and thrown in the trash can."

I know the difference, that's why I asked. Here's another: I'm gonna get my laptop fired up again, so I can post "in the can".

I'm hoping to enjoy Steve Winwood, but the Jethro Tull catastrophe of last year has me scared about my classic rock favorites. One or two Traffic songs will do and I'll consider the outting a success.
