well gang, here we go again with an absurd display of my arrogance...starting an entire post of my own self-absorbed pithy comments. A sad display of my need to feel important, or a glimpse into the mind of an unheralded genius? You Decide.....

Gang, I don't think i'll ever get used to working 40 hours a week....The new Sigur Ros sucks...Morvern Callar was ok but not as advertised...The new White Stripes is good...Fuck Jeff Tweedy and that guy named Jim O'Rourke he rode in on...What can I say about the war? its a goddamn joke to me...I still like Aaron Brown....SNL sucks these days, after a good 3-4 year run...I recently realized that I haven't seen a good movie since CQ...Its baseball season and I couldn't care less...HOT: Debra Messing, Katie Holmes, JLo, Natalie Maines, Diane Lane, Paula Zahn. NOT: Renee Zellwegger, Xtina, that bitch from the Pentagon, Courtney Love....being single sucks...the oscars were a joke this year...I absolutely love drinking beer...

and thats all folks (for now) had to cut it short cause i'm at work

Work sucks. At least my job ends in 7 weeks, and then I get a break for a month or two.

Fuck Jeff Tweedy and that guy named Jim O'Rourke he rode in on.
To what are you referring? Jim O'Rourke is an unofficial member of Sonic Youth these days, and I think he fits in well there. Bad Timing is a great record, too. (available now at Tower records)

Work does suck, getting a job is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. And I have to agree with your placement of Renee Zellwegger in the NOT category.

first off you're an ass...
and now...

the new white stripes is very good...

tweedy is still great, as is o'rourke and loose fur. i remeber you telling tweedy you were his favorite songwriter in columbus. i suppose you feel differently now...

haven't seen tv in a while. no comment on the war, or more importantly snl...

jlo and katie holmes are both quite hot...

yeah, i like the loose fur ep too, but it doesn't really seem like much of a collaboration. you have tweedy songs and o'rourke songs. and while jim seems to offer some more interesting production to jeff's songs, all jeff seems to do in return is make weird guitar noises.
the more like the moon ep is great, except for the song where jeff tries to sound like conor oberst for some reason.

I just don't really care too much for the O'Rourke tunes on the Loose Fur disc. The Tweedy songs are knockouts though.

I wish I could get an actual copy of the More Like the Moon EP. I wonder what the Hell is up with it.

I'll agree that J-Lo is a not, but so is Renee. I swear to God, everytime I've seen her outside of playing a character in amovie, she looks freakish. Her eyes are all squinty and it looks like she ate something far too sour. I don't exactly understand how they make her look normal for a role, but she needs to get on that makeup person to do her up for a big social event like the Oscars.

I've seen very few movies since CQ that can live up to it. It's beautiful. Now we all know that breasts don't matter to you since Debra Messing has none, I don't find any of your hot picks especially hot, J-Lo's name alone is enough to make me sick, Katie Holmes and Diane Lane are attractive, Renee Zellwegger is cute in a little giddy girl sort of way, I never watch SNL anymore unless there's a good host or musical guest, it's pretty much sucked for the past few years.

im going to go with rachel dratch, basically because she always plays ugly women or boys so realistically. sheldon on wake-up wakefield is unparalleled in transgender humor. not to mention her work as a siamese twin with the baby arm coming out of the side of her head, but maybe the makeup artists are to be celebrated for that.

I love those skits. I try to impersonate them by saying, "Randy Goldman" in her voice. Hilarious. Sheldon is pretty funny too, and Rachel Dratch certainly plays boys and ugly women quite well. She just looks funny. You know?

Is it okay for me to ask what was so great about CQ?
It was kind of fun to watch and had all the earmarks of a "hip" movie--cute slackerish lead actor, Air-clone score, directed by a Coppola, gave a nod to the campy Barbarella, has the same title as a Clinic song, and other such stylish attributes, but that's really all I took away from the movie--all style and no substance. I'm not trying to sound like a bitch I'm just honestly wondering what has led people (including people like Roadie whose film taste I highly respect) to praise it so much?

let me clarify a few things:

First, for the most part, I am able to separate the art from the artist. I think Being There and Summerteeth are two of the top five records of the 90's. I also like O'Rourke's work with the Youth and my other favorite band, Stereolab. However, the two together suck ass as witnessed by the most overhyped record i've ever seen, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The songwriting and production is subpar. Jay Bennett is exactly what it needs. I also think (and have heard from reliable hearsay) that Tweedy is an asshole that didn't know he had a good thing going with the Summerteeth lineup. Keep in mind that these opinions are coming from the biggest Wilco fan on this board.

Second, I don't want to say that I liked CQ precisely because of the style, but that played a big part. There is nothing wrong with liking a film because of its style. I think it was an interesting and heartfelt look at an aspiring filmmaker, cleverly (and refreshingly) set against the backdrop of 60's sci-fi kitsch--a sub genre that really hasn't been revisited by modern hollywood. However, the kitsch factor isn't overbearing or spoiling, and I think the overall feel of CQ mirrors the optimistic and creative attitude of the young director/protagonist. In other words, its easy to fuck up a film about filmmaking, and its easy to fuck up Fellini-esque dreamscapes, but I think Coppola does it here with heart and refreshing creative imagination (on his first try, no less!). Of course it doesn't hurt that the chick is hot as shit.

Third, whoever said breast size doesn't matter to me is exactly right. I am in love with Debra Messing and Katie Holmes equally.

Fourth, I too am a big fan of Wakeup Wakefield.

There's nothing wrong with "way too many people" liking it. I don't know why so many do. I just know that when I was in high school, it was a great movie and I wished that my life could be as fun as theirs (minus the speed, of course). If you see "Empire" for the first time and you are over the age of 17, it won't be good and you'll probably not like it. It's just something that, I think, a lot of people like because they associate it with good memories. Every time I watch it, I think of all the inside-jokes that my friends and I used to say to the TV when we watched it.

"Office Space," on the other hand, is not overrated or underrated. It's "rated" just enough. "Office Space" is bloody hilarious. From Michael Bolton, to Diedrich Baker's neighbor character, to Brian, it's just a great movie.

Of course, like Carl, I have nothing to back this up.

This is true. I just watched it for the first time about 9 months or so in a fit of boredom and thought it was really stupid. I thought that again today as I watched some of it on t.v. However, I can see how it would be a lot more enjoyable if watched at the targeted high school age.

Nah, don't bother.

I never had Office Space quoted to me much, so I was able to appreciate it. I never heard it rated - under, over, or otherwise. I just think it's a pretty funny movie.

I agree, the appeal of the Misfits is a great thing. However, I've talked to way to many people who claim to be fans and like their music simply because they should... It's like... they're trying to be Indie or Punk and so they go out and research what they "should" know in order to fill that prerequisite. *shrugs* maybe i'm just a snob.

i love office space. along with the big lebowski, i'd have to say it's the most frequently quoted movie among my group of friends (eight year olds dude...)...maybe Snatch is on that list too, although way too many people try and fail to recreate the pikey accent. wankers.

as for overrated, i'd say Clerks is way overrated. i mean, it's good, but not as good as everyone makes it out to be. i think i liked chasing amy better, and even it wasn't one of my favorites.

I concur. When I first saw Clerks, I was in love. A movie about people that were very similiar to me! It was a real first. Requiem For a Dream was great, but I don't do heroin. Saving Private Ryan was great, but I'm not in the military. Regardless, I was absolutely in love with this movie. However, as I watched it more it started to, sadly, get old.

I can still watch Requiem. I can still watch Star Wars. I can still watch just about anything. But Clerks is tiring on me. I've laid off of it for a while, and maybe when I watch it again it will be laugh out loud funny, but the last few times I watched it it was merely OK.

I enjoyed "Clerks" when I saw it. I thought it was very funny and written very well. But the acting by almost everyone was horrible I still don't get how Jay is so popular. Jason Mewes is a horrible, horrible actor. And the lead guy (whose name I cannot recall) had the charisma of cardboard. Overall, it was good to see once but I wouldn't want to see it again. I liked "Mallrats" better and the half of "Chasing Amy" that I have seen.

digsy, i would think that you of all people would appreciate jay for the comic book hero that he is. and frankly, the role of jay would be wasted on a better actor.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

Bluntman & Chronic pale in comparison to Wolverine & Jubilee, Batman & Robin, Deadpool & Weasel, Strong Guy & Multiple Man, I could go on and on. I also am not down with pot humor, so that might detract from my appreciation of the character.

Yes, this is definitely the weakness of Jay and Silent Bob. It is also what endears them to my 15 yr. old students, which makes me appreciate the duo all the less.

I can still watch Requiem.
I can still watch everything but the end of Requiem. Ugh, it gives me the willies.

Anyone ever see that short film on IFC called, "The Bear Witch Project," with a gay guy and kenny the teddybear?

I've never seen it but my brother and dad have and they always talk about it. It sounds really funny.

What, are you doubting the credibility of said duo or dissing on them as characters? Dude, you don't want to get into an X-Men argument. I don't know the touch of a female, but I do know my X-Men. Weasel was Deadpool's arms supplier and drinking buddy for the first 16 issues of his ongoing series (which debuted Jan-97). The series was originally written by Joe Kelly and penciled by Ed McGuinness. Seriously, if you actually think comics are respectable, I'd check out issues #1-32 of Deadpool...very good.

Oddly, I know this because of my lack of female interaction and this knowledge also keeps the females away. It's a never-ending cycle.

You wouldn't be living a lie! You'd just be neglecting to tell them something about yourself. But your right, they should see through your X-men obsession to the real Digsy.

The last (new) girl I dated was very interested to hear about Daredevil, Elektra, Wolverine, Spider-Man and the likes... She'd ask me where I thought the comic was going and whatnot... Funny thing is, she doesn't read comics, so I guess she was just trying to talk to me about something... esp. since all she listened to was butt-rock and numetal. *shudders*
It's hard to find a girl in Louisville that *isn't* into butt-rock.

Anyway, Digsy, what did you think of the two part Wolverine with the Catholic Church conspiracy and "Dogma?" Personally, I thought it was a great storyline and wished it had been a four part or maybe an entire story arc. oh well.

I thought Dogma was a good movie and I didn't really find it offensive, despite my religious tendencies. About good ol' Wolvie, I haven't read "Wolverine" since issue (consults Excel spreadsheet) 95. Wolverine as a character has only interested me in the context of the X-Men team. Wolverine solo usually (at least when I read the book) consisted of "Look how much of a bad ass I am...really...I am...grr." As if anyone cared, I currently read New X-Men, Uncanny, Daredevil, Amazing Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and some other books here and there.

My dream job is still working in a comic shop...

Oh, well I was referring to the name of a villain in the miniseries, but cool.

haha. And I do care what you read. excellent choices, although i do think that uncanny is going somewhat downhill.

This is going to get terribly esoteric, so here goes:

Of Uncanny, New & X-Treme, I find that Uncanny is probably the best. Of course Grant Morrison is a great writer and all, but he 100% does not respect the X-characters. He has butchered continuity and many characters for absolutely no reason. X-Treme is good, but Claremont has seen better days. Uncanny, aside from the horrible horrible art, is the happy middle ground. Chuck knows and cares for the characters and is trying to do interesting stuff, but his pacing is all off.

The best X-Writer would have Claremont's X-Knowledge/respect, Grant's ideas, and Chuck's dialogue. My favorite of all the books I get right now would have to be Amazing Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and Daredevil. I also am enjoying Ultimate Spider-Man (Ultimate X-Men is going downhill).
