TOPIC: Saturday Night Live

Saturday night live is always on Comedy Central and sometimes on E! But they always how the same ones. I've been waiting for years to see the one with the Foo Fighters where Will Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate is playing drums. Now that E! has the old ones, I am crossing my fingers for the one with Brian Wilson on it. I believe Jodie Foster hosts. Now I don't have cable, so I don't really have regular access to 24 hour SNL, but I see it enough at friend's houses. They always show the same ones, at least on Comedy Central. It's always either Jane's Addiction, Robbie Robertson, or Vanilla Ice as the musical guest. I've seen those episodes the most. They are always on. Oh and I think it's cool how on the current episodes Tiny Fey (who is way cute) says "good night and have a pleasant tomorrow" after weekend update. That's what Jane Curtin said in the 70's. It's like a little tribute to the snl history.

I love Tina Fey. Period. See, there's a period right there. And there. And...okay that could go on a while BUT I really like her.

Anyway...that was pointless.

Okay, I'm just trying to get my post number way up. I confess!

I will take Phil Hartman over Chris Farley anyday. I like House Guest more than Tommy Boy (hey, it's Sinbad!) and Newsradio was/is hilarious. That show had one of the best ensembles ever until Khandi Alexander left and Phil was murdered. Jon Lovitz couldn't compare.

OK. House Guest is pretty funny stuff, but don't get me started on Tommy Boy. I laugh almost every bit of that movie. David Spade's sarcasm (although some find it annoying) humors me.

"And, did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?"
"No, it was a cordless."

HAHAHA. That's great.

I really wish that E! would show the snl episode that is hosted by Martin Sheen. Why? Because the music guest is Lodger-era David Bowie, perfroming TVC-15, and Boys Keep Swinging. I've only seen this episode once , and I only got to see the last 10 minutes.
Another cool episode would be the Malcolm McDowell episode featuring two amazing performances by Captain Beefheart, performing Hot Head and Ashtray Heart.

i don't think an incredibly i mean really good episode of saturday night live has been aired in about 15 years. adam sandler and mike meyers are funny as individuals, and of course it spouted wayne's world, a great skit and film(s), but the old school saturday night live with steve martin and gilda radner and dan akroyd was the best. ph34r.gif

SNL always goes through eras. It will suck for a while, then it will be awesome again. The news segments will also go through the same cycles. Personally, I love Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon doing it right now. They are hilarious and a really good team...Much better than Colin Quinn. I want David Spade's "Hollywood Minute" back, too. Oh! And, I can't forget the "Buh-bye" segments or the "Matt Foley- Motivational Speaker" skits. laugh.gif

I'm a gimp and think that watching Buffy reruns or Beat The Geeks is more important than the news, so teh way Tina Fey and Jimmy make the news funny...so funny...and Tina is very nice...um but anyway, they teach me a lot about those countries...over there...

And I also love the Daily Show but I still feel like I'm cheating on Late World when I watch it....

I find Saturday Night Live boring these days, absolutely not worth watching. I forecast a day when the critics will, for the zillionth time, say, "Saturday Night Live is back and as good as this era or that era." It's happened before. I still found it boring and forced. It will happen again, and I'm skeptical that it will get any better.

They should cancel it or show worthwhile re-runs.

Steve Martin, though at one time the most-invited host (probably still is), has never been a cast member of Saturday Night Live. Other regulars hosts include Geroge Wendt, John Goodman, and Tom Hanks. The person most asked to be on Saturday Night Live is Paul Simon, who has hosted more than just about everyone other than the four I mentioned before, and he's also been the musical guest more than anyone.

Random shit that I know and I don't know why.

Check it out.. The word "Fuck" being broadcast on Saturday Night Live
-Norm MacDonald got fired for saying it
-Today REM sang "I never understood, don't fuck with me" in "What's the Frequency Kennith"
-Pearl Jam in 1994 performed "Rearviewmirror" ("I gather speed from you fuckin with me"). Funny thing, on the comedy central reruns, they don't show "rearviewmirror," they show "Daughter" as the second song. Maybe that was from a sound check. I taped the original airing in 1994 and "Rearviewmirror" was the second song.
-That sketch of the kid's show where each person had a letter on their shirt and when they stood in line it spelled "fuck." hahaha that was a funny sketch.

I'm sure there are more, those are just off the top of my head.

I was wondering about this earlier today. It's very common for people to say, "SNL isn't as good as it used to be. Today's cast sucks." But, really, how much blame should be placed on the cast? Isn't there a fairly large pool of actors you could put in a funny sketch? Isn't really the writers' fault if the show sucks? Even if the cast is really good, the show will suck if they're acting out unfunny skits. I'm sure the cast has some impact. Mike Myers, for example, created the "Wayne's World" sketches, but overall, I would blame the writers... except for Tina Fey. It's never her fault.

I agree with TF. The actors do take their part in it. SNL actors write a lot of it and often create the recurring characters--which have been lame for a very long time now. The actors' trouble is that they can't even take a well-written sketch and make it work well on stage. They make it die a harder and much more terrible death.

SNL should be taken off the air.

I just watched tonight's SNL and it was aweful. Beck was good, I haven't heard much of his new album. But its a cool mellow vibe. But the sketches were aweful. Horrible. There was a WalMart one that was not funny. I was embarrassed to be watching it. And there was some stupid rap song during the fake news.
However the rhyming Burt Bacharach thing was good because it was nice a short.

I watched tonite's episode (while doing homework....sigh) and it may just be because I usually try to find the good in most things, but I don't really think SNL is that bad. It has been better but it has been worse. I thought the Michael Jackson & Elizabeth Taylor sketch was hilarious (anything involving MJ and his magic tree is fine by me) and I actually liked the Wal-Mart sketch. The Middle School news show-sketch thing was also entertaining.

SNL nowadays is usually 50-50 (tonite's Saddaam/Osama sketch completely bombed). Weekend Update, however, is very nice. Tina Fey, very nice. very funny and very nice. But really, since Tracy Morgan is now the it cast member, why isn't Brian Fellowes on anymore? You cannot miss with Brian Fellowes.

It was also nice to see Jennifer Garner doing comical stuff since her Alias routine is usually pretty...non-funny...BTW I saw Daredevil today and I have to say that if you didn't enjoy Spider-Man or X-Men, don't bother with DD. Once again, coming from someone who usually tries to see the best in things, the movie wasn't worth seeing if you aren't a comic fan. I blame Ben Affleck. Of course I blame him for a lot... ph34r.gif

I am glad this topic is back. Trth be told, the last time I actually saw an episode of SNL was when my friends forced me to watch with britany spears hosting. i kicked and screamed and protested, but they fed me roofies and made me watch. some of the skits were ok, but mostly terrible. nothing will ever compare to the sketch comedy of kids in the hall.
thank you for being a friend.
