We've talked about "Saved by the Bell" several times before so I thought I would point out that the first two seasons of the show will be released on DVD on September 2. You can get more info from dvdfile.com.

TV on DVD is pure genius. I am a super fan of it. I can only hope that this leads to the "Full House" DVD with audio commentaries by Andrea Barbar and Jodie Sweetin.

I'm waiting for Seinfeld on DVD.

Also, one of my favorite TV shows ever...PARTY of FIVE. Since this show is no longer in syndication, I haven't seen it in years. I can't wait!

Oh, and Star Wars Episodes IV, V, and VI.

Does anyone know anything about any of these?

It'll first be those weird episodes with Haley Mills ("Let's get together...").

No news on Star Wars, JC. I bet it'll happen after the release of Episode 3. Indiana Jones this fall will be the greatest.

Yeah, I heard that they were going to release the Star Wars DVDs "in order," so it'll be at least another two years before we get the original ones.

How much do you want to bet that the SBTB commentaries will feature only Dennis Haskins and Dustin Diamond from the cast? My decision to purchase that DVD will be based soley on the extras since I have every episode already stored in my brain.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

I'm a a member of tvshowsondvd.com, which e-mails you whenever a show that you have interest in has news about their DVD. The special features for "Seinfeld" are being worked on right now, so it should be out soon. The first 2 seasons of "NewsRadio" will be out in the first part of 2004, which I'm really excited about.

As for "Star Wars," it is true that they won't be released until Episode III comes out. Then, I'm sure, there will be a 6 DVD box set and I'll have to buy Episodes I-III again because I'm that much of a sucker. Also, I've read that only the Special Editions of the original trilogy will be released, which blows so much.

I already thought about the possibility of a 6 DVD set, and I've decided not to buy it, as long as I can get them all individually at least.

I fortunately saved the original un-special trilogy on VHS, and that's good enough for me.

I have the "SportsNight" complete series DVD box set and it really is just amzing. There are absolutely no special features, but the show is enough. I watched every episode in May and it just left me wanting more. It really sucks that the show had to be cancelled, but if it wasn't, we may have someone else in "Six Feet Under" and that wouldn't be cool either.

As for "Star Wars," I probably will just buy them all seperately unless there is something way too super special about the box set. I, too, have the originals on VHS, but I wish George Lucas would give us the option. Maybe he should just release each of the original three on 2/3 disc sets, including the original, special edition, and gaggles of special features. That would be cool....

Indeed on all counts. Comedy Central is playing SportsNight now, at 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. most nights. rolleyes.gif The show deserves a little bit more appreciation than that. I think the only reason it tanked was that it had a horrid timeslot. It was good a couple years ago when Comedy Central picked it up and put it on around 1 p.m. or so... It was my ritual every morning: breakfast, Buffy, Buffy, M.A.S.H., M.A.S.H., SportsNight, lunch.

There's the slim chance that they will release it like the Beauty and the Beast DVD, which put three incarnations of the same film on the same disc.

I doubt that, since Lucasfilm marketed the trilogy in 95 as "One last time."

I actually thought they were starting with the Kelly and Slater years. I looked it up on ebay the other day out of curiosity, and it showed a picture of the cover. It did not include Nikki, Miss Bliss, or the other characters from that era. So, I assume it is starting with the pilot for the first season following the Miss Bliss years...I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

(Like the birthday boy, I have nothing to back this up.)

Lucas has recently said that he wants to "fix up" the original trilogy before releasing them on DVD. He's hinted that he wants to add in some scenes that would've given away major plot points of the first three episodes. This is, of course, a silly idea because, as Randall pointed out, Lucas thought up the plot to Episode I over a weekend.

Wait....so he wants to do a Special Edition of the Special Editions? How much more unused film does he have for these movies? This is getting ridiculous. Unlike most, I still have a speck of respect for Mr. Lucas, but this is pushing it.

The impression that I got is that the new version wouldn't use "previously unused scenes." Instead, he wants to digitally create all-new scenes for the movies.

Give me a break. Isn't there anyone at some point in the chain of command to say, "Hey, George, this really isn't a good idea"? Or does he have such control over the Star Wars universe that he is the only decision-maker?

The part of me that still respects George Lucas says that he should be able to do whatever he wants with the films. I know that when I start writing professionally, I will want to have as much control over the product as possible. I'm sure he is a perfectionist and I can totally understand his desire to constantly tweak his films and add more to them (I'm always doing the same to the stuff that I create). This part of me applauds him for having the sole control over his vision, creation, and work.

Then there is the fan part of me that wants someone to put the money-ho on a leash. If the Star Wars films were independant films that had only achieved cult classic status, then this part of me would be fine with him tweaking it. But they aren't. These three movies collectively are the most successful films of all time and are still so popular that even people who have never seen any of the films know the quotes, characters, etc. By tweaking and adding more, he is only tarnishing the memories that all of us who have seen the films before (also known as 85% of the planet) of how we remember them.

The special editions were cute and fun, but it really should stop there. The special editions only enhanced previously deleted scenes and actually added to the story, with the exceptions being the Wampa in "ESB" and the new dance scene in "ROTJ" (Come on, Sy Snootles rules!). By adding completely new scenes, he's just plain altering the films and making them into something completely different. This is ridiculous!

So there are my two opposing viewpoints. I must say, the fan side of me wins this argument, while the creator side of me sides with him when people call him a money-ho. Geez.

Don't get me wrong, I totally respect Lucas' right to do whatever he wants to his movies (after all, they were his babies). But I would think that he would have some people around him to think objectively about the changes they were considering making and tell him when he's crossed the line. But I guess everyone is just seeing dollar signs...

There once was. His name was Lawrence Kasdan. They disagreed over RotJ being an action film and the two never worked together again. His collaboration with Lucas made the first two films great. RotJ turned out well because of the good momentum. With the exception of Indiana Jones, Lucas has been milking it ever since.

Go to imdb.com and click "trivia" on the New Hope page. It's all spelled out there.
