The impression that I got is that the new version wouldn't use "previously unused scenes." Instead, he wants to digitally create all-new scenes for the movies.
Give me a break. Isn't there anyone at some point in the chain of command to say, "Hey, George, this really isn't a good idea"? Or does he have such control over the Star Wars universe that he is the
only decision-maker?
The part of me that still respects George Lucas says that he should be able to do whatever he wants with the films. I know that when I start writing professionally, I will want to have as much control over the product as possible. I'm sure he is a perfectionist and I can totally understand his desire to constantly tweak his films and add more to them (I'm always doing the same to the stuff that I create). This part of me applauds him for having the sole control over his vision, creation, and work.
Then there is the fan part of me that wants someone to put the money-ho on a leash. If the Star Wars films were independant films that had only achieved cult classic status, then this part of me would be fine with him tweaking it. But they aren't. These three movies collectively are the most successful films
of all time and are still so popular that even people who have never seen any of the films know the quotes, characters, etc. By tweaking and adding more, he is only tarnishing the memories that all of us who have seen the films before (also known as 85% of the planet) of how we remember them.
The special editions were cute and fun, but it really should stop there. The special editions only enhanced previously deleted scenes and actually added to the story, with the exceptions being the Wampa in "ESB" and the new dance scene in "ROTJ" (Come on, Sy Snootles rules!). By adding completely new scenes, he's just plain altering the films and making them into something completely different. This is ridiculous!
So there are my two opposing viewpoints. I must say, the fan side of me wins this argument, while the creator side of me sides with him when people call him a money-ho. Geez.
