i acquired a sega genesis yesterday from game trader. $15 gets you the system, hookups, and two controllers. i got a sega six pack game which comprises of sonic 1, columns, the revenge of shinobi, streets of rage, super hang on, and golden axe. i also got star control. it's an odd space strategy game. if anyone has any old genesis games they'd like to sell, let me know.

I have Roostor Madness Xtreme, Manticore Puzzler, Snac-Man, Super Rocco Brothers, and Final Lemur IV
I'd be willing to let all of them go for $20.  Manticore Puzzler doesn't have much replay value.

There's a cheaper way to do all of this... emulate.

genesis does.......you can't do that on nintendo.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

Well, I'm not the expert on it, but it's downloading the software from Ninendo, Super Nintendo, Genesis or a number of others (including arcade games) onto your computer. It is sometimes hard to tweek properly, but with a controller you can play most of the old favorites from our childhoods.

my main problem with emulation is that the music always sounds really dinky. there's something nice about having the system and the cartridge too. it just feels more appropriate to stare at a tv screen rather than a computer monitor. it's like the difference between 4 tracking and recording on your computer.....not really but sort of. penguin rhymes with pendulum. not at all.

I agree it's not the same, but it's cheaper and easier to find.

Poor Sega, they always made the better machine but could never beat the competition. I guess it's all in the game selection (not that they had a bad one, well they did on the Master System which I owned of course...).

BrianW, you were off to such a good start until you made that ridiculous comment. Super Nintendo was light years better than Genesis (not to mention the shitty SegaCD and 32X add-ons) in every area I can think of: Sound, graphics, and especially games and control. I can't compare the later generation of Sega systems to their competition because I learned with the Genesis that Nintendo would always ultimately put out the better system that wouldn't go out of business within two years (see Saturn, Dreamcast), so I wouldn't buy Sega products any longer.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

doesn't sega still make games for the other systems? must suck to give in to the competition like that.

technically the genesis was better than the super nes in every area save colors. nintendo just had more developers, better games, more money, a moustachioed plumber, and an elf in a green suit. i have a ridiculous theory involving school pals and video game systems that i might go into later.

Whoa, Keith, sorry I made that comment!  I still stand by it though, as Exlion pointed out.  You might be right about colors.  Certainly SNES was a great system.  I worked for Babbage's during the Saturn phase.  I always read that the Saturn was the better machine.  Same was thought of for the Dreamcast.  This is not to say the games were better.  So throw in the Master system which, again, was thought of as a better machine than the NES and it's a pretty fair statement to say that the Sega made better players than Nintendo.

But, yeah, the whole 32x debacle was pretty bad.  The number of times Sega has made its customers upgrade is pretty ridiculous.

First off, I hope you realize that when I was calling your comment ridiculous, I was being sarcastic. You can't really have a serious conversation about video games, although I pretend to. Anyway, I stand by my comments as well. Play any game that both SNES and Genesis made (i.e. Mortal Kombat 1, Mortal Kombat 2, NBA Jam off the top of my head) and it is so obvious which system is better.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

nothing can compare to the PS2 it has the best game play and best controller the graphics are great and it is the overall best system out there - I know someone with an XBox that is getting rid of it for a PS2 for some of these reasons and the game cube is geared more toward kids

Keith, Mortal Kombat did have blood on Sega versions, while not on the first snes ones. Other than that, point made.

I wish I could quote something from each of the last few posts, but oh well.

Blightman- Drugs and WSP shows have damaged your judgement. PS2 is IRRELEVANT.

Exliontamer- Atari Jaguar is indeed irrelevant, especially that huge piece of crap controller. However their version of Alien vs. Predator is fucking amazing. Trust me. Atari Lynx was just way ahead of its time and had the misfortune of the 'Atari' label that ruins the credibility of anything made after 1984. And you are crazy if you think the Commodore 64 is irrelevant. It doesn't get much better than Dig-Dug on the old 64.

Deevol- I agree with the blood thing. That was really lame how the SNES took out the blood and lamed up the fatalities in MK1, but it was still a much better game than the Genesis version. Also, the Genesis NBA Jam had the original announcer from the arcade game, but otherwise was crushed by the SNES version.

P.S. I have a feeling a Gamecube may be in my future for my birthday (April 25th, for those keeping score), so I will keep you updated on those developments.

3.commodore 64

I agree, but C64 did have Mancopter, one of my very favorite games ever. That's the one game that I do have emulated on my PC. It's great.

Most forgettable game system with biggest hype - Neo Geo.

What was it like the first 16 bit system or something? Like $600 I think. Worthless.

neo geo was either 32 or 64 actually. it was pretty insane for it's time. in addition to the systems being pricey, the cartridges ran about $200+.

1. where's virtual boy on the irrelevant list?
2. PS2 irrelevant? Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Tony Hawk 3, DVD player?
3. emulation isn't as good as the real thing, but it's pretty fucking awesome
4. i think neo-geo was 24-bit or something weird like that
5. some neo geo games are actually pretty cool (metal slug series)
6. i think genesis nba jam also had music unlike snes. but it sucked.
7. the only thing genesis had on snes was speed, hence sonic.
