in the 3rd grade it was bon jovi's "slippery when wet" and def leppard's "hysteria"(which i'm honestly not that ashamed of).
then it moved on to dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince, mc hammer, and vanilla ice. in high school i really liked spandau ballet(of "true" fame), culture club, and this god awful band called my life story(16 piece orchestra with bass and drums). oh and my first cd was snow's "12 inches of snow".

i guess the only cds that i am ashamed of are:

nazareth: hair of the dog
espn jock jams: new wave (bought only for "public image" by public image limited and "Ca Plane Pour Moi" by plastic bertrand, the rest is pretty bad)
Romantic Hits of the 80's (purchased only for "the lady in red" by chris debugh, i cant help it...i like that song.... unsure.gif ...heh, it also has "true" by spandau ballet on it, if that makes up for anything)

Hmmm...the first record that I ever bought was a 45 of "Walk Like an Egyptian." The first tape that I ever bought was a cassingle of "Kokamo." The first CD was a single of "This is the Way We Roll," by Hammer. I guess until about age 13, I really tended to follow the pop charts. But I still have all of these to this day. Anyone who has seen my CD collection knows that I don't get rid of anything. Consequently, there are definitely some questionable items.

I guess I am most ashamed of: anything by Bush, Collective Soul, or the Toadies.

I was on a Hysteria kick for a while back in the day as well as DJ Jazzy Jeff. And Mister Mister. My god I wasted (in hindsight) many a night listening to that crap. Though I was also into Ice T, NWA and Eazy E. I never quite figured out why a white kid from the suburbs (this was in the 80s now!) ever got into West Coast Gangsta rap. But I did.

first record was the moneky's greatest hits. (6 years old)
first cassette was weird al yankovic's dare to be stupid. (10 years old)
first cd was the beatles sgt. pepper + rubber soul (12 years old)

the moneky's record has long since been forgetten(i have no idea where it is) the others i still have. ironically the first non beatles cd i owned was a gift to me to the day i got out of the hospital from having brain surgery...Pink Floyd's dark side of the moon.....very funny!
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

i don't think that the first albums you owned when you were 6 count as skeletons. i mean, ok, we ALL listened to some pretty stupid shit back in the day, but I like to think of skeletons more as 'guilty pleasures'.

but since we're there: first cassette(and 1st concert):
debbie gibson - electric youth
first CD: new kids on the block - step by step

NOW, current skeletons, ie guilty pleasures... (im just drunk enough to admit this) but occassionally I pull out no doubt's tragic kingdom

I also tend to put a bangles song on every mix I make, but that doesn't outdo the fact that "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred is also on every comp I've ever made. I also have not one, but 2 records by Dee-lite. and I like both of them.

so there.

there's nothing wrong with liking the monkees. i like them. they put out some really good material back in the 60's. I think "The Porpoise Song" is beautiful, and "Randy Scouse Git" is a very very good song.

IWantElvis and I had to hock some of our lesser CDs this weekend for money so this is very relevant. My first CD was Real McCoy's "Another Night" WHICH I have autographed by the German dance trio. My second and third CDs were Bon Jovi's "Crossroads" and TLC's "CrazySexyCool." I will never part with that triumverate of suckiness.

The stuff that I finally sold included ChumbaWamba, Smash Mouth, Matchbox 20, Spice Girls, Ace of Base, etc. Guilty pleasures of mine would have to be both Third Eye Blind and Hootie & the Blowfish. I still maintain that "Fairweather Johnson" is a good album and I actually thought more of 3EB before I found out that their new album will be called "Crystal Baller." I'm not down with that.

Overall I've always had iffy music taste and it still is pretty iffy.

I'm surprised Ray Davies responded to this thread due to his overwhelming fear of skeletons biggrin.gif

wow, this topic makes me nervous, but i'll respond anyways. my first cd was the 1996 grammy nominees cd (including such rare treasures as "you oughtta know" by alanis morissette and "you are not alone" by the catmonkey himself). my most laughable prior musical obsession was TLC. i absolutely loved them. i had a scrapbook. i was left eye (rip) for halloween in 6th grade for christ's sake. as for current skeletons, i think i prefer them to be just that, skeletons. unsure.gif

you can really tell what musical era we all grew up in based on our answers. for instance, havesomesoma has to be a lot younger than me--thankfully i listened to "good" music by 1996.

my skeletons came courtesy of columbia house: spin doctors, soul asylum, pearl jam, blind melon, dave matthews band...

very true. i guess our past musical choices really do show our age. i'm only 18, not that that excuses me having the 1996 grammy nominee cd.

I'm not ashamed to say that I own some questionable CDs, but I suppose they would fit this category...

The lame: Neil Diamond (2-disc and 1-disc greatest hits), John Denver (greatest hits)

What my friends call "dude-rock": Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Biohazard, etc.

"Rap-Rock": Korn (their first and only good album), Linkin Park

I am not ashamed to have loved Metallica's dreaded black album, GNR's Use Your Illusion I/II, The Bangles' Everything, or Wham!'s Make It Big.

I'm a little more embarassed about NKOTB (all of their albums), Spin Doctors (paid money to see them in concert), En Vogue, Phish (gasp!), and the fact that I can recite all of the lyrics to Ice, Ice Baby (to this day).

i forgot about "make it big". i still think "freedom" sounds like a great lost motown song.

My first cd order (from BMG, these were in fact my first cds) included the following:

The Offspring's "Smash"
Green Day's "Dookie"
Counting Crows' "August and Everything After"
Aerosmith's "Big Ones"
Weezer's "Weezer (blue)"
Dave Matthews Band's "Under the Table and Dreaming"

and the sort of skeletony

Collective Soul's "Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid"
Hootie and the Blowfish's "Cracked Rear View"

and the skeletons

Genesis' "The Way We Walk"
Soundtrack to Reality Bites
Crash Test Dummies' "God Shuffled His Feet"

11 cds for the price of one. What a steal. I still stand by Collective Soul and Hootie, by the way, but I recognize that many would not.

Collective Soul I can understand, but I find Cracked Rear View to be filled with bits of nostaligic joy and solid songwriting. Mostly the songs that weren't hits, but thats often the case anyway.

Of course I'm in no position to complain, I dissed God Shuffled His Feet, which for the life of me I can no longer stand.
