Yeah, I'm still undecided about this one. I don't find their newest album too interesting (although it does definitely ROCK). Plus, it's $15. Plus, I don't really care for OK Go. Plus, it's a school night...

the donnas earlier stuff is pretty good, its all lo-fi misfits style. they are pretty to look at. I've got to say "spend the night" is not at all a good record. all the songs sound the same. it is way over produced. it sounds like kiss. but the one song that they do have which changes lyrics occassionally and is divided into several tracks IS pretty catchy.

if i were in nashville, i would go. okgo is pretty good; i saw them open for they might be giants last semester. pretty good stuff, if ya ask me.

I would guess that it was Parrish and Roger, since I don't think Rollum likes either of those bands and I can't imagine Matt in that setting. Actually I can, and it's pretty funny..but still.

i didn't see any members of the features there. but smee's little sister hung out with sugarplum and i during OkGo.

i DID see rory and meeks right up front during OkGo yelling for 'get over it' while raising their shirts up. sluts.

sugarplum and i had our picture made with the singer of OkGo because he's kinda hot. and i had a picture made with the fat donna because she's hott and she rocks. the donnas liked my shirt. brad schmitt from the tennessean (brad about you ) was backstage. i hung out with the keyboard player from OkGo. he knows the make up and he passed up partying with superdrag the night before because he was looking at hank williams' boots. and apparently someone gave him a features cd. i assumed it was rory and meeks.

anyway i may post the pics later

ok go is pretty fancy with their rhythms and everything. sometimes they are a little too fruity for me ("it's tough to have a crush when the boy doesn't feel the same way you do") but their songs are pretty well put together and catchy. And live they are very tight. I guess the new songs are, too, anyway. I haven't seen them in like two years and haven't heard the new album.

i guess some could consider the white stripes novelty. maybe even me. i have absolutely no problem with novelty as long as there is talent, originality, and substance to back it up (things in my OPINION the donnas lack).

(on another side note that probably not many of you care about...the white stripes say that the simplicity of their live act and the simplicity of their "novelty" red and white ensembles is meant to take the audience to a simplistic, child-like state of mind, free from over-analyzation. jack likes the kids. plus they admit it makes them more memorable. plus they like red and white. and so do i.)

It's all entertainment.

People are suffering terribly around the world, and we are discussing which band has better songs.

I think people read too much into musicians, especially people like Jack White. Of course the music is childish, their actual ability as musicians is relatively crude. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just I don't care.

My main problem with it all is that the anxiety of influence (more times than not) screams louder than the lead singer of most of the bands discussed on this message board.

Isn't the goal of music(or any art), besides escapism, to take what has already been done and improve upon it? That is my problem with the White Stripes. I see no improvements. I'd rather buy the records they listen to.

I wonder how many people died inhumanely as I typed this message, not that I care.

maybe the type of discussion you would prefer could be found on some sort of human rights activism message board. this is a message board for a band. we tend to discuss music sometimes. sorry.

and once again, i'm not saying that people shouldn't view the white stripes as novelty. it's just that in my OPINION they have quality substance to back up their novelty act. novelty just can't stand on its own. musical taste is just that, a matter of taste. listen to what you want. there's no conflict here.

What's wrong with human rights? Some of my favorite entertainers have been supporters of the cause, not to mention great thinkers in general.

I'm pretty stupid. I usually just like stuff that I think is good fun. I liked the movie "Charlie's Angels" because it was just fun. I enjoy the music of Ludacris because it is just fun. I like the White Stripes. I think they are good. Therefore, I listen to them and could care less about their influences.

I am all about some human rights. there is some terrible shit going down these days, but that's not what we're here to talk about. here, we discuss music like the snobs that we are and enjoy being. i don't see anything wrong with your breif and random schpeil about suffering people, its just that. breif, random, and has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
you shouldn't feel guilty becasue you are a middle class american who is priveledged to talk about music instead of starving to death. just go with it, man.

and i listen to music becasue music is good. the white stripes are good. in my opinion, they HAVE improved upon music. take this analogy -
(ready?)

speed(the movie): rushmore
saliva (the band): the white stripes

the point is, just becasue something filled with explosions and more, AND MORE AND MORE of whatever postmodern junk we're being fed, does not make it superior. the white stripes are stripped down. simple. old school. and that's what makes them different. and better than a lot of the shit we've had to listen to on the fucking radio at work.
thank you for being a friend.
