TOPIC: Songs that make you Sleepy

as many of you know, i work at a daycare. i teach a class of two year olds. since i get there every morning at 6am, by their naptime i'm ready for the little monsters to go to sleep. teachers are supposed to have music on for naptime, you know, to distract the kids from any classroom noises. we have no unscratched lullaby cds, so i usually put on NPR for classical music. but said music also gets mingled in with news reports, and sometimes the talking keeps the kids awake. so i've decided to just burn a cd for naptime. and while i'm at it, why not include a tracklisting that's enjoyable to myself? any slow-paced, melodic song will do, as long as it's free from cursing and vulgarity. i've got stuff like the beatles' "here comes the sun" and the white stripes' "you've got her in your pocket," plus lots of stuff from "sea change." but i know i'm missing a lot of obvious ones. any suggestion are appreciated. sorry for the lame thread.

(Almost) anything by Elliott Smith. Ditto for Coldplay. The instrumentals on the Royal Tennebaums soundtrack are also good.

Stan Getz or any of the more mellow, slower bossa nova songs. That's what I go to sleep to sometimes. I also think that "I know" by Fiona is very relaxing.

...I forgot: I used to always go to sleep to Travis-The Man Who a few years ago. That and Joni Mitchell-Blue. I believe those to be solid bedtime albums.

Yeah, that's a good one. HSS, I'd just put on that whole album.

You know what else is good sleepy music? Nick Drake.

And good call on "Good Night" by the Beatles. I used to sing someone to sleep with that every night. I find Ringo's voice to be so soothing.

I think "Find the River" by R.E.M. is a good sleepy song.

Well, it's good to know you approve of the Joni....on the otherhand, you could mean she is too sleepy...

Yes,Nick Drake ... beautiful sleepy music. Man, I haven't listened to Nick Drake in a very long time.

Is the goal to make the kids sleepy, or make them suicidal smack addicts?

strange. for the past hour ive been a little dj playing music to try to get my friend asleep. it worked well. so far ive played:
yo la tengo - you can have it all
the jayhawks - all the right reasons
ryan adams - sylvia plath, sweet carolina, wonderwall, you will always be the same (pretty much 2/3 of his songs would work)
portishead - glory box
jump little children - cathedrals
jeff buckley - hallelujah
counting crows - color blind
and a few more but the list is getting too long. by the way she was out by the second song, i just continued playing them to keep the mood.
i will dig a tunnel from my window to yours.

My favorite album to sleep to is William Orbit's Pieces in a Modern Style. It is a bunch of classical songs with electronic instrumentation. Very pretty and sleepy.

Air's Premiers Symptoms is good until the last two songs. Oh and Lambchop's Is A Woman is great sleep music, but there is some profanity.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

jack johnson has some nice sleepy tunes, but it's hard to find ones that don't make you want to kill yourself. there's always the first 10 minutes of echoes by pink floyd. then again, you want these kids to go to sleep, not go experiment with mind-altering drugs. that dido song that eminem sampled always puts me to sleep.

Exit Music (For A Film) -- Radiohead
I heard a version of this on the movie Unfaithful. I don't think it was a track from Strung Out on Radiohead because it was kind of jazzy and I didn't watch much of the movie, so I didn't get to watch the credits. Anyone know?

It was some dude called Brad Meldau. For future reference, you'll almost always find the answer here.

looking back I dont know how I did this, but at one point I used to listen to Limp Bizkit to fall asleep. I find that odd now, and now it's hard for me to fall asleep a dave matthews solo cd or norah jones, I have to have complete silence

Has anyone heard Sugar Ray's first album "Lemonade and Brownies"? It rules, no doubt about it. It only makes me hate everything after that even more. Of course, this is not a good sleepy-time album.

Yeah, I'm conflicted on this point. I want something loud enough to drown out the crying, yet quiet enough to hear the police sirens.
