so... ive recently been dumped and instead of wallowing in my sorrow, i want to listen to some tunes like: "fuck you , etc". we all know we've been there, and while I'm succeeding WONDERFULLY so far (smile.gif) i need some new records.

im talking about good break up songs that make you feel strong like "I will survive" as opposed to say, dashboard confessional.

any suggestions? ph34r.gif

As a person who has recently been dumped, I'll second the Violent Femmes. I mean if it's good enough for Angela Chase in My So-Called Life, then it's good enough for me. I also like The Smiths because many of their songs mention crying or dying or both. And of course Mr. Costello, especially "Lipstick Vogue" or if I really liked them and am feeling a little unstable "I Want You".

SOS and IWE, sorry to hear you ladies got dumped...

My only recommendation: MxPx!!! If you've never listened to them, you're cheating yourself of the most positive pop-punk music on the face of the planet. While it helps if you're down with Christ and stuff, it's not necessary to be very religious to get their meaning. Most of their stuff is simply "Yeah, you got dumped, that shit happens, go out there and do something to make your life better again". This band has helped me through some very, very difficult times the last couple of years. I'd say that their most accessible and relevant CD is The Ever Passing Moment. Trust me.

oh and I want elvis, the BEST costello break-up song is "It's time" from all this useless beauty. watch out though, bc if you don't put the song on repeat then "I want to vanish" will come on next and promote you to slit your wrists.

(of course, you probbaly know this already smile.gif)

So true, so true... maybe one day Elvis Costello will have to go to court just like Ozzy and Judas Priest did for influencing kids to off themselves.

i think morrissey would be a better candidate for being sued in court over kids offing themselves to his music. "i know it's over" is just borderline suicidal.

I went through a phase a few years ago after I bought When the Pawn and listened to it practically nonstop even after it started skipping. I still love it (Tidal is good, too).

I would just like to say... I love Fiona Apple's music, and I'm not ashamed of it.

Could somebody please explain to me why she is looked down upon? (and preferably somebody who has some perspective on the subject and whose argument will not solely consist of "I fucking hate her")

I can only guess that it's because she came out in the 1997 Female Empowerment Lilith Palooza movement and is instantly categorized with Meredith Brooks and Paula Cole etc. I do agree that she is credible and a good artist (that I don't listen to, but still...). "Fast As You Can" and "Criminal" are songs that I still like.

i, too, enjoy fionna apple. i got "when the pawn..." when it first came out but have just lately been listening to it...alot. i love "love ridden" and "paper bag." i don't have "tidal" but i do enjoy the songs i've heard from it. i'm making the same assumptions as digsy as to why people are afraid to say they like her. but i will no longer be afraid...

I love Fiona Apple. I have loved her from the first time I heard "Sleep to Dream" on the radio back in the day. Both of her albums are great, in my opinion.

I think that people hate Fiona Apple for some combination of the following four reasons:

1) the "Criminal" video

2) she's an outspoken vegan

3) she quotes Maya Angelou a lot

4) the speech that she made after winning best new artist at the '97 MTV Video Music Awards (and the catfight with Janeane Garofalo that ensued)

Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I think both of her albums are great too. She just comes across as such an idiot in person (cussing out sound guys on stage, saying weird and stupid things at various award shows, extensive Maya Angelou quoting as JC said, etc) that it almost overshadows her music at times. The fact that she was a teenager on Top 40 radio doesn't help either. I get slightly embarassed to admit I like her sometimes, but the music is really good. Any word on a new album ever?
I TOTALLY AGREE!

That's funny, that's the only reason I liked Fiona Apple.

We would always watch MTV during our lunch hour in college in hopes of seeing this video. Then they replaced it with some chick with pigtails in a catholic school girl outfit asking to be "hit". The rest is history...

as a "fat" girl, by society's standards, no. girls are not allowed to be thin in my presence.

im just kidding. but she is really teeny tiny. my problem is not that she is small, but that america has idealized her size as the ideal - an ideal that is impossible for womyn to duplicate which is why there are so many eating disorders.

and the fact that she was writhing around in her underwear in the video is (possibly unintentionally) equating sexy with being heroin thin, which just exacerbates the problem.

Yes, I feel the same way.

I remember Fiona was voted one of the sexiest female artists (or maybe it was the Criminal video for sexiest video??) on that show that was briefly aired on VH1, The List. Did any of you ever watch that show?

I used to like watching it even though I hated it. Almost everything they voted for made me sick. And there was always the token feminist that had to pick all Alanis Morisette, Aretha Franklin, and Janis Joplin shit (I don't mean to offend anyone) no matter what the topic.

The List is another cool VH1 show that has since been axed. I enjoyed watching it...I remember when Hootie was on there and there was at least 6 REM albums in all of their collective top 3 choices. It was nice being able to see celebrity music taste...I miss it.

For me, disc one of across a wire has one of the greatest case studies in fame. Listen to the original Mr. Jones... literally a more direct song about wanting fame very badly could not be made.

Then listen to Mr. Jones on Across a Wire. Could a more relevant statement about how fame sucks be made? Such an incredible change to a song's meaning made by such a few subtle differences.
