Damn, I just called the number and it's out of service.  I didn't know spongebath went under.  So now it's time for my two cents.

What Williams did right - Self.  I hate Self but the music sold very well and was no doubt profitable (and single-handedly kept the company alive).

What Williams did wrong - let Matt work with Dreamworks, tried to pick up too many no talent bands, invested way too much money in the features to only get an ep and 10'.

What were they saying three years ago?  Murfreesboro was going to be like the Minneapolis of the mid-eighties?

I will agree somewhat with you. In fact.. about 95% agree with you. However, the fact that a 10' and an EP were the only Feature's products to come out weren't all Rick's fault. The band had some hang up's about the direction and all that. At least, that's what I've been told by several people. Could be wrong...

I would definitely like to start an 'i hate self' club. Where to start, though? I don't know. There is so much to hate. Let's start with Mahaffey's bad hair and schitty production of Features music and his own.

So much to hate?  Self is one of the best 'bands' of the last 5 years, hands down.  Hair doesn't really have anything to do with it.  Now I'll agree with you, I have not been impressed with Mahaffey's production of artists other than himself.  Case in point : the work that he did with the Features.  But that stuff doesn't really *sound bad*, it's just that that production just doesn't really fit with the Features at all.  (But isn't it the job of a producer to produce a band how they *should* be produced?)  So I'll concede that as a producer of other artists, he has been sub-par.  But concerning the incredible body of work that is Self, you're full of shit, in my obviously not-so-humble opinion.  Which records have you heard?

Neuboy, I consider you no less than a god. You will be added to my relevant list. Do you often worry about a person who would make an album with nothing but toys? After that Mahaffey produced junk, I'm sure we could get the features to join! ohmy.gif

Which Matt would win in a fight?
Pelham or Mahaffey

How about a yodeling contest?
I bet Pelham could out yodel him buy 15 dB.

I like The Features. It's why I was checking out their website. But reading you people (many of whom seem to know each other and have not much to do with their time) bash Self is reason enough for me to never bother with such a stupid message board agian. Just wanted to let you guys (and i easily assume you are all boys) know how petty and obnoxious you seem when you waste your time slamming Self. Why? Where's the hatred coming from? Because, to be honest with you I'm assuming jealousy.
Stupid and lame.

I am definitely jealous of anyone who is egocentric and narcissistic enough to name their group Self. If only I were so clever.

Someone mentioned a Mahaffey/Pelham fight: it's impossible to determine how two short skinny guys would do.

I must say, though, that Matt Pelham is 10x cuter and could definitely take Mahaffey in the bikini contest.

I go back and forth on Self. Sometimes I enjoy it, and sometimes I hate it. I hated their last show (at 328, 10-12-01). I think my main problem is that Mahaffey just doesn't put himself on the line by writing about, you know, EMOTIONS. All of his songs are making fun of this or that or referencing something to the point that he forgets to put any of himSELF in it. Compare that with 'Action' or 'Demons'.

As for jealousy, I don't care whether Self sells a million records while the Features play weddings in Sparta, I like them better. They're not competing with each other, and Mahaffey even let them use his gear when they played LA a while back.
I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party.

It's a good point that you make about Matt Mahaffey's lyrics.  While there are some introspective songs ('Lost My Senses,' 'Life Could Be Swell,' 'What Are You Thinking?' and 'Waiting' are a few that come to mind), he mostly does write very cynical, highbrow, pop culture-based, third person type lyrics.  But I think that's where his heart lies, and I think that he does get off on writing/performing those kinds of songs.  It really is just personal preference - some people like that kind of thing, some don't.

I can totally understand that you didn't care for the 328 show in October.  While I won't say that I flat-out didn't enjoy it, I was surely disappointed.  And not because the songs were no good, or the performance was no good, they were, it's just very challenging to listen to 1 hour plus of music that you've never heard before, that you don't know.  To know that a band that you rarely get to see anymore has so much music that you know and love, but not to hear any of it...is just frustating.

Of course I would take The Features over Self any day, but I've got your back JamieCarroll. For just about every moment of suck Self has, they (he?) have (has?) a moment of brilliance.

I've got amps instead of stamps motherfucker.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Jesus Christ, guys i am lol at this thread, man. jamiecarrol--keep the wit coming.

look, my point of view is that i'm not going to rip a band a new one and insult people by name on the computer unless they really, really deserve it. Matt Mehaffey is by all accounts one of the nicest guys to actually make it out of the boro. I've only met him a couple times, but he was nothing but cordial to me. The same goes for the other Self members i have met or hung out with.

Hey, i'm not a big fan either. I think Subliminal is their best work. They lost me on Breakfast except for a few cuts. Do I think they (he) warrant the big fat deal from Dreamworks, no. Do I think they warrant being torn apart here, no.

Also, All hail that Keith is back from the Land of the Rising Sun! Only problem is we cant understand a word he says.
