No, I wouldn't call my self a fan. I just can't keep up - what is it called now? Final Generation Deep Space 11? But honestly, when I do happen to watch it, I find myself interested. My dad has a friend who goes to the conventions...

dear mr. track two from pink flag,
i have never seen star trek or star wars. i tend to have unnatural fears about outer space, and the genre's rabid convention-attending fanbase. i've always associated the show and the movies as sort of being the same thing. would you recommend seeing one first?

There is a big difference between Star Wars and Star Trek.  Star Wars is more about entertainment; it's often funny and there are lots of cute characters.  Don't get me wrong, there is still alot of 'serious' content and there are action sequences and alot of geeky details, but generally, Star Wars is more 'fun' - like ELT said, it's socially acceptable to be a Star Wars fan.

Alot of things are under the umbrella of 'Star Trek'.  There was the old Star Trek show (think Spock).  There was Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (others, ELT?)  There have also been many Star Trek movies.  So the world of Star Trek is much, much more vast than the world of Star Wars.  Star Trek is much less about entertainment value and more about geeky details and intelligent plots.  Getting into Star Trek is like getting into Guided by Voices: it's like where do you start?, and you can never really know everything.

jamie, i think both bob pollard and leonard nemoy would appreciate that comment.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

i'm mr. track four from pink flag....you must have the iranian copy that deleted field day for the sundays and three girl rhumba. if you have unnatural fears about outer space, i wouldn't watch either. jc nailed the differences on the head, except for the entertainment part. i happen to be entertained by southern doctors in space and time paradoxes. if you want to watch one, watch the original series. most people can't get past the bad acting and silly effects. the campiness is what makes it though.

My God Bones, what have I done?
What you had to do, what you always do: turn death into a fighting chance to live.

Jim Kirk is a bad ass.. Him and James Bond, they always get the chick and have some impossible chance that works out. But Kirk is a dork at heart, Bond is totally suave.

star trek is for people who are willing to let go reality and enjoy the imagination of space. although it has gotten pretty lame in the last couple of years.

funnily enough, kirk never once said 'beam me up scotty'

it was usually more like 'beam me up mr. scott'
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.
