Some observations on Super Bowl XXXVIII:
-This afternoon, I was watching ESPN2, where they had the NFL Films Super Bowl specials for each of the Super Bowls. Watching the one from SB XXXIV was a really emotional experience for me. This was the first time that I've watched a significant amount of footage from that game since about summer of 2000, and it really stirred me up. I'm not ashamed to admit that I got kind of choked up and almost shed a tear watching that last play. Still so very heartbreaking.
-Gumbel/Simms are definitely my least favorite NFL broadcasting team. Although Madden certainly gets on my nerves sometimes, I'd rather have the Monday Night crew than Gumbel and Simms. Hell, I'd take some of those third and fourth tier CBS teams over those two. I think my favorite broadcast team is the ESPN Sunday night crew - Patrick, Theismann and Maguire.
-I thought the commercials were a little below average, not horrible, but not as good as they've been in the past. Did anyone else find it astonishing how many cars were unveiled? It's like, not enough just to kick off a new ad campaign during the Super Bowl, now you have to unveil a whole new car! One of those cars - the new Ford GT - looks pretty amazing.
-Ed Hochuli is ripped. Hulding (flex). Furst down (thrust).
-At the end of the first quarter, Jake Delwhatever had completed 3 passes for 1 total yard. Yikes.
-The halftime show was bad, even by cheesy Super Bowl standards. I'm glad I was not the only one who noticed that (besides UofH marching band's rendition of "The Way You Move") there was not a song from the new millenium performed until Justin Timberlake came onstage at the very end. Kid Rock played the two hits from when he first blew up
two albums ago, Puff Daddy played "Mo Money Mo Problems" (hello, 1997), and Janet Jackson played some shit from
Rhythm Nation (hellllooooo, 1990). All I can say is someone must've owed her a BIG favor. Oh yeah, and then at the end of the show, her right boob flopped out. Was that intentional? If not, hahahahahahahaha. If so, that seems a little risque for prime time television on CBS, doesn't it?
-Did anyone actually
see the streaker?
-I was definitely rooting for the Panthers. They remind me alot of the 1999 Titans. Plus, I picked them to win, and I like to be right. But they lost. Barely. All in all, it was a pretty exciting Super Bowl.
