TOPIC: The 2002 Video Music Awards

As previously mentioned, I watched the Video Music Awards (i am a geek). The main reason I watched was to see the Hives perform and to see if the strokes or the white stripes won any awards. I expected the show to suck, but man, it totally surpassed my expectations in terms of suckiness.

The best performance:

Hands down, the hives. they performed "main offender", which rocked me to my core. at the end of their performance, Howlin' pete made a comment about how now everyone can turn off their tvs since they have performed, and I wished I would have taken his advice because up next was......

The worst performance:

The Vines. They did "Get Free" (Big Surprise!). Their performance was in utter shambles. the "singer" looked like he was going to vomit after every sentence. I found it appalling that the Vines got the big stage while the Hives were reduced to performing on a little stage. However, I can understand why MTV did this. The Vines needed all the lights and pyro to mask the fact that they suck.

By the way, The strokes didnt win any awards (fucking dashboard won the only award they were up for), and I think the White Stripes won 2 awards.

Well even though they suck i will have to sit through them at least once so i can tape the Hives performance. And I voted about 50+ times on mtv.com for the Hives to win the MTV2 award...I hate Dashboard. I really do.

I wish he would die in a plane crash (those was jokes!)....

the hives were great! and i did actually consider turning off my tv after their performace. i'll do just about anything that howlin' pelle tells me to. i signed up to get their e-newsletter and they are all freaking hilarious. the last one was practically just an essay about how the hives are the best lover you will ever have. the vines. i don't dislike the vines like everyone else on this board, but i do have to admit that their perforrmance was pretty horrible. the fact that the lead singer looked like he was about to vomit after every sentence was the only part i found enjoyable. oh well. and the white stripes won 3 awards, though i wonder if the people who gave them the awards actually appreciated the greatness that is the white stripes or if they just thought the legos were cool. and did anyone else see jack white on the pre-show announcing that he was going to be in a civil war movie later this year with nicole kidman playing a desserter who lives in a cave? i'm not quite sure how i feel about this....

After a whole weekend of nearly missing their performance, I finally managed to see the Hives (and also made my cousins watch it as well). It was sheer brilliance. The Hives worked the small stage better than the Vines did the large one. The Vines....they....aside from the fact that they conducted their interview in a McDonald's during the pre-show, they were pretty bad. The lead singer tries to howl and hit those retarded high-notes instead of actually, I dunno, singing the song.

But the Hives rocked.

In other Hives-news, I have to ask if anyone caught the NERD/Hives concert on channel 75 Sunday night? The Hives rocked out, of course, but to a crowd that was...odd. They were playing the LA Virgin Megastore, outdoors in the parking-lot area (or so it looked). Aside from some fans up front, it seemed to be treated as one of those concerts in Hickory Hollow mall where you look at the artist, shake your head, and keep on walking.

Of course Pelle was in full form, complementing the crowd on their spelling techniques, telling them to be quiet, and talking about how much everyone loves them. Twas beautiful (and shot on home-video cameras too...odd).

Oh and is it true that Pelle and Nicholaus Arson are brothers? I read that in the latest CMJ New Music Monthly with them on the cover. Huh....

Gee-whilikers yeah I taped it. I was "MIA" for the weekend and there was no way I would miss this odd-opportunity. Maybe someday I can throw a Hives-party where we all dress up like the members and watch the video!

Okay...once again my lack of social interaction/sleep has placed it's icy palm onto the keyboards to type some really Ludacris stuff...rar...but yes I did tape it.

Where do all these fans of MT-fucking-V come from? I hadn't run into anyone that actually cared for MTV in a couple of years prior to this board...

In any case, welcome stopforme. Good to have you aboard, even if your taste in television lacks the verve that you'll find DigsySlatery's television habits posess, but that is true of all of us.

Hey, I may dislike MTV but that doesn't mean I don't watch it. Prior to the glorious new era that has been ushered into being with the inclusion of GSN on basic cable, I watched MTV all the time. It's always good for a laugh and the occasional bit of good music. I am a Real World/Road Rules junkie (lesser now though).

sorry, it's just that i find bitching about "boy bands" and britney spears and the fact that mtv doesn't play many videos anymore to be a tired, dated activity. too many easy targets. i'm personally fascinated with the direction that mainstream pop music has taken in the past 5 years, and i honestly think that it needs to be accepted. it's a new era. pop-culture is so much more fragmented than it was 30, even 10 years ago. as more and more individualists break off from mainstream pop culture(to go their thrill jockeys, their drag cities, etc.), the major labels, mtv, and clear-channel become more obsessed with homogenizing culture to market to the homogenous mass that remains. i don't know, i just get a kick out of watching the decline of western civilization from the comfort of my living room.
