ok, ray and i were tossing a few names around, and here's what we came up with...

mike love (did you see his r'n'r hall of fame speech?)
paul stanley (he's a greedy bastard w/ a star on his face)
gene simmons (possibly the ugliest man in the world)
dennis de young (styx- need i say more)
nigel pulsford (the bald guy from bush)
steve vai (he wears flowery clothes)
vince neil (the world's most annoying speaking voice)
paul simon (he has an african band for crying out loud)

these are some that stood out in our minds.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

diamond dave can join the list, but vince is already there. even vince isn't bad enough to warrant being listed twice.

Sorry about that. Someday I'll learn to read.

Speaking of Warrant, perhaps we can add Jani Lane. Or maybe I just feel like picking on hair bands today.

Well I will go with the obvious Scott Stapp. Don't we all wish that he would have died in that car wreck? And of course Eminem...and for my old school hate I have to add both members of Steely Dan. I really, really hate those guys.

What's to hate about Steely Dan? They were a great band.

So I'm sure you guys are joking about wishing that these people would die, but you know, it's a pretty terrible thing even to joke about wishing people would die...just my $0.02.

I do hate the guys in Steely Dan. They act like old bastards who are too cool for every room they are in. And I really really hate that song...that darn song that is played on 105.9 all the time...their only *big* song I assume.

And of course I don't really wish Scott Stapp would have died in the wreck...that would be horrible. But I do wish that Creed would stop making albums. Of course my hatred for every celebrity in the world combined does not surpass my hatred of Eminem. He is truly someone that I wish would just get lost in the shuffle and never be heard from again. I would love it if all 7+ million of his fans would turn on him and burn his records......and his house.....

I have never spent any money on any Eminem product, but the guy's got talent. He has made some quality music. It's hard not to when you're around Dr. Dre all the time.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

He might have talent (he can rhyme words in amazing ways I guess) but the content of his music and his general attitude makes me loathe him with all my being. He bashed Moby. He honestly conducts himself like a guest on Jerry Springer at all times. Any talent that he has is easily surpassed by his horrible character.

Oh I dont wish death on Steely dan. I absolutely love "Pretzel Logic" and I think "Cant Buy a Thrill" is one of the best albums of the 70's. However, you have to admit, they were kind of dorky, but dorky in that music geek/"we're a studio band" way. They were a stellar act. All their albums are good, except for "Gaucho" (God, I hate that album, I mean "babylon sisters"? UGH!).

I was hoping for some catastrophe at Bonnaroo that would've done away with a lot of people.

Maybe something could happen that would wipe every one away but the Features. They could start the genre afresh...

I was also hoping for a Bonnaroo disaster, but I think it had more to do with the fact that a girl I was dating at the time was there spending the whole weekend with some dude. I'm over it, though. Really. If there HAD been a disaster, I would have hoped that Les Claypool and Gene and Dean Ween were unharmed. I don't really think many of the other artists have much to contribute, though.

In my opinion, Phish is nothing less than the best live band of our generation. Why? I'll tell you. I love lots of different kinds of music. Take Wilco for example, one of my very favorite bands in the world. They make great records, and they put on a pretty good live show. But recently I saw them two times in three days, and they played the SAME EXACT SET, with the same comments between songs, etc. ANYWAY...getting to my point: if you're not taking chances on stage, or improvising, what are you? A trained monkey, that's what. Anyone can learn a set of songs and regurgitate them night after night. Not to say that there's anything wrong with that. I still love going to see bands that don't take any chances on stage. But you're on a whole other level if you're improvising and not just following the map of the recording that you made (however great it might be). Don't you hate going to a show and knowing exactly what you're going to hear?

For the most part, I dislike the "jamband culture" just as much as you guys. I don't take drugs, I don't wear patchwork clothes, and I don't have long hair. The "scene," to a certain extent, is bullshit. It's a superficial drug culture. But the MUSIC is "the realest thing in the world" (to quote Trey), and is worth putting up with the Hippie BS to be a part of.

It's just my $0.02, folks. You can take it or leave it.

I don't think a band's music has to be completely open-ended and free floating (and repetitive) for their live performance to be innovative. I know a lot of rock bands that play extremely varied sets from night to night. A few off the top of my head: Ben Fold's recent solo tour, Cake (who specifically said "We never have a setlist" at the Ryman this year), Tool's recent tour, Weezer's recent tour, and MY vote for best band of our generation (in AND out of the studio) Pearl Jam.

I think playing longer versions of songs in a seemingly completely random order doesn't automatically make those songs great if they're not great in the first place. Sorry to offend.

I agree with you. I applaud all of those bands that you mentioned, and I would definitely put all of those bands in the category of "taking chances on stage" by not playing the same set every night.

I agree with this too. Hence, there are alot of jambands (MOST, in fact)that I don't care for (Widespread Panic immediately comes to mind), even though I respect what they're doing in the live environement. I think one of the things that I like about Phish is their pop sensibility (something that most jambands don't have).

I'll admit that I don't give jambands the chance that some of them deserve because I'm so turned off by the hippie culture thing. I guess I've always thought that if a band encourages you to take drugs while listening to them, then they must be hiding the suckitude of their music. I suppose this is a prejudiced attitude. Does anyone know of any straight-edge jam bands? That would rule (me-- © StephanieW)!

I understand all the points made in defense of Phish/jambands and I do agree with those points, but I stand firm in my belief that said bands are not for me. Even when Oasis *try* to add on to their songs (I Am The Walrus, Gas Panic!, Rock N Roll Star) it tries my patience (except Gas Panic! which they could add a forty-five minute flute solo and I'd be down for it). I definitely love bands who don't have setlists/change the setlist every night, but when it comes to the songs themselves I would like them to stay at least within two minutes of the recorded version. I dunno, I guess I'm a stickler for pop songs.

You named perhaps the greatest list of live bands currently touring. But the reasons you specified to me only support Phish's brilliance. They, simultaneously, argue against other jam bands.

I never heard of Phish actually encouraging getting high during their shows, but I won't deny that that happened. But the show I went to was great straight sober, trust me.

phish does not encourage their audience to take drugs anymore than judas preist encouraged those guys to kill themselves back in the day.

people are people, and their personalities mesh with the kind of music they listen to. I have a lot of friends who loooove phish and widespread panic. i don't know about the relationship with drugs, but its definitely a strong one.

I honestly don't think they are good musicians.

ever taken acid? smoked pot? i swear these substances (...from what i hear) make music sound good even when its not. i think there is a whole culture so confused and fucked up they cant even recognize good music when they hear it.

granted, im sure there are alot of fans who don't take drugs, and im sorry to make that generalization. regardless, their music is not for me.

I'll end with a joke:

That was everything that I wanted to say but didn't know how to say it. I don't know much about Phish etc but what little I've seen/heard lets me know that it's not for me. There are no ties, 3 chord songs, converses, dancing drummers, or in-fighting. I need those things.
