Wild. Can't say I'm surprised, though. To think he survived this long after polluting his body so thouroughly is quite impressive.

How sad so few care about the loss of a loved one.

Considering I do basic research to help treat those with drug addiction, I can't say that I'm too upset about the death of someone who glorified drug use so much.

It's Jerry Garcia all over again.

Hey,
Please understand there is no lost soul, ever. Any loss of a person should be a personal loss. Everyone deserves respect in life or death.

Choices are sometimes out of line with many peoples thinking, but people should be free to choose their own way.

A person's personal life must be seperated from their art. Many great artists, as well as other people, have made seemingly poor choices, but created songs, poems, or paintings, that spoke to many and are timeless.

Spiritual, physical, and emotional suffering may be self-induced, but we may never know why.

Believe in Love,

I can't be the only person who is not surprised and doesn't really care, right?
That's so NA.

Whether its a surprise or not, (I actually found it surprising, since he's mellowed and gotten married the last few years) the loss of a great american literary figure is always a sad occaision.

Without HST, many a popular writer of today would have not had a voice. Anybody who has enjoyed a Chuck Klosterman, a David Sedaris or even a columnist like Bill Simmons, has HST to thank. He took the conventional rules of writing and journalism and set them on their ears.

Pick up a copy of one of HST's collection of private letters like "The Lost Highway" and you'll get a glimpse into the mind of a genius.

Things aren't always as they appear to be on the surface.

I tend to agree...but then again, weren't you upset when Elliott Smith did it? Is this hypocritical of us? I think the main reason I'm not too upset is that it sounds like he planned it & executed it with intention- aka this is the way he wanted it, so there seems to be some peace in that.

I personally don't think he glorified drug use to the same degree as HST. Maybe he did romanticize it just a little in his songs, but I believe his death was a tragic example of how drugs can shorten one's life. Of course, depression is largely to blame-- especially if you believe the reports that he was clean when he died. Or if you believe he was murdered...

Maybe I don't know enough about HST to coment on his contributions. I know he wrote some amusing stuff for Playboy and SI, but I'll take Peace Frog's word when he says he was highly inspirational. Unlike Smith, though, he seemed to be an example of how much one can damage his body and still live many years.

I suppose if I denied the power of drugs to inspire great work, however, I would never listen to rock and roll.
