That's pretty amazing. Those are some big names. I wonder why they chose Tennessee to host it? Maybe its central location for southeasterners? Its lack of an income tax? Its cool parallelogram shape?

people who enjoy jam bands either do too many drugs, like to wank on guitar, or hate soap.

i wanna know what came first: does over indulgence of weed lead to the jamband and its field-festival-patchwork-skirt-dread atmosphere, or did the jamband lead to the weed. i have many friends who are trapped in this vicious cycle, people who have driven miles and miles to see 'widespread,' people who can never have enough copies of bootleg grateful dead material...i need to identify the root of this problem in order to begin my 12 step intervention with them. any suggestions?

Goddammit, freezetag!  Does it really make you feel that 'cool' or 'credible' to sit up on your little indie rock perch and throw rocks at people who simply have different taste than yours?  Or is it just because they're too popular?

dear sweet jamie, you know me better. in fact, you know that my friends took me to a 'widespread' show where thanks in part to copious drug use i had a damn fine weekend. i wasn't necessarily saying jambands are bad...ask neuboy who my favorite jamband is. i'm not so down on the music, i mean to each his own and all...i'm just frightened by the 'lot scene.' i love ya though, please continue to school me in tolerance and and keep me from being like the rest of your friends.

And you sir, are an asshole. How dare you tell someone else that their musical taste is 'wrong.' If you want to dislike something, that's fine. But don't tell someone else that they can't like that as well as your precious britpop.

Congratulations, you win the prize for stupidest post. I love everyone here who is so 'open minded' about music, but won't listen to anyone who improvises. Miles Davis built a mighty fine reputation for himself, and Oh My God, all his notes weren't composed. Anyone who lumps Medeski Martin and Wood in the same category as Phish has obviously never listened to either. That is like saying Sun Ra and Pink Floyd are the same because they improvise.

Yes, hippies are people who I could do without, as my previous posts have pointed out, but that has nothing to do with the music. Seriously Ray Davies, have you ever listened to MMW? How is what they are trying to do any different than what any other jazz bands from the past have tried to do? It's just jazz. Improvisation has always been a part of it.

I mean, think of it this way. I wouldn't want to go to a show with a bunch of screaming teen-aged girls, but that doesn't mean The Beatles were a shitty boy band.

Anyway, ruling out entire genres of music is so closed-minded. I challenge you to listen to Shack Man all the way through and call it 'hippy bullshit.' I know, your friends won't think you are as cool if you are not citing Pet Sounds, or Loaded, or whatever you are supposed to claim you are listening to, but who knows, you might actually like it.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

whoa calm down there little fella. if you would just care to listen to me for just a second. i have heard MM&W. I dont care for them. Improvisation is an important part of jazz, yes i agree. but the type of self-indulgent noodling that MM&W do nightly is completely different. MM&W are talented, i'll admit that, but they are just not my 'cup of tea'. I am not as closed minded as you think I am. i like many diffenrent genres of music. And another thing, I love a man who is very famous for his improvisation skills....FRANK ZAPPA. So, dont rule me out as some kind of pretentious fuck who claims to like albums that he has never heard before. I am not that person. oh and by the way, i dont like britpop. it died when oasis released 'be here now.'

[Britpop] died when oasis released 'be here now.'
ha! i remember that day... i was a bright eyed freshman in his first week of college, ready to make a go of it in a new town... i woke up that warm august morning and ran right out of the dorm in my jammies to pick up my copy of oasis' long-awaited third album. well, to make a long story short(er), by the time i got back i was cold, cynical, and disillusioned with the world... what was up? what was down?? nothing was black and white anymore, instead everything was merely shades of gray. i mean come on, 'all around the world' was the great song noel had been 'saving' for his third album... yeah right, i've been more captivated with the sound of a toilet flushing, which, ironically, is where my copy of said album ended up. don't worry, i won't get into the difficulties of trying to get a cd to go down a toilet... i'm sure we've all delt with that problem at one point or another...

Very true about 'Be Here Now'. Although, I can tolerate that album sometimes, 'Standing on the Shoulder of Giants' still to this day makes me vomit. If 'Be Here Now' was the death of britpop, then 'This is Hardcore' was its eulogy (and a beautiful one).

I do think that you could make a case that the following groups are still making britpop:

Gene
Travis
Supergrass
the Auteurs
Pulp
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

On another note, I'd like to apologize for being such a dick yesterday. A had a wicked stomach virus, and all of the vomiting left too much acid in my mouth, I think.

I'll have to agree with my roomate on this one- Travis and Supergrass are damn good music.

As for this Be Here Now bashing, I'll admit it wasn't as good as WTSMG, but I still like it. Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants was definitely a step down, although it has some good songs.

ok. or maybe some people enjoy listening to players who can actually play their instruments, rather than some schlepper who bought a guitar and figured out how to play a power chord. there are too many of those kids around today. maybe they should take notes from some 'wanking' guitarists like jimmy page.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.
