in honor of VH1's 100 greatest love songs, i was wondering what everyone considered some of the greatest love songs ever...

"god only knows" by the beach boys
"i'm sticking with you" by the velvet underground
"grow old with me" by john lennon
"our way to fall" by yo la tengo
"here, there, and everywhere" by the beatles
"sweet thing" by van morrison

i know i'm forgetting way too many....so feel free to add....

not just because this is the features board, but "the idea of growing old" is seriously one of the best love songs i can think of right now...wedding worthy even.

Something- Beatles
Luckiest- Ben Folds
Say Yes- Elliott Smith (which I've heard Ben Folds has covered?)
A Drop in Time- Mercury Rev
This Love- Pantera
Benefits of Lying- Apples in Stereo

I think that "God Only Knows" is the ultimate, though

I have to add that "Idea of Growing Old" is very, very, very awesome and my favorite love song of all time. Oasis "She Is Love" is also very nice. Hmm...this does stump me though.

This Love- Pantera
Very nice. I put this song on a mix tape for my girlfriend when I was in high school. Well, more specifically, I put the slow part of this song on a tape with the heavy parts removed because I was afraid she couldn't handle it. I did the same thing with a Metallica song. I think it was To Live is to Die or something like that.

"You're the One for Me, Fatty"...Morrissey.

In all seriousness, I think that it doesn't get any better than "God Only Knows." Okay, well, that and Vanilla Ice's touching ballad, "I Love You."

yeah, "our way to fall" and "you can have it all" are definitely contenders, as well as "last days of disco" and "the crying of lot g". i forgot how good that album was. they need to get out of nashville.

when i talked to Ira at the elvis costello show, he said that they would more than likely do a nashville date on the tour for the album whenever it comes out.....

I don't mean to nitpick, but "Meant For You" is sung by Mike. Unless you really meant a different song. Cause I think they had a hit in the 70's that was a love song that Dennis sang. I don't know much about their 70's stuff - except for the "Love You" album. "Meant For You" is like a minute long. Not that it's not a love song, just a weird choice. Hey, I stand by it, I really like the song and find myself humming it occasionaly. Here is the entire song:

As I sit and close my eyes
There's peace in my mind
And I'm hoping that you'll find it too
Cause these feelings in my heart
I know are meant for you
Meant for you
you doo doobie doo
you doo doobie doo

Then it goes into "Friends." Man, what a great album.

Also, did anybody else think that "Nothing Else Matters" was the most touching song ever written when you were in 7th grade? I sure did. Did anybody's girlfriend in 7th grade think it was just such a beautful song? Mine sure did.

Of course, every one of my choices will be a Beatles (or former Beatle's)song. I'm sorry, but I really do feel that they are THE writers of the greatest love songs ever. So, here are some of my favorites...

Love-John Lennon
Something-The Beatles
She's Leaving Home-The Beatles
For No One-The Beatles
Every Night-Paul McCartney
Lovely Linda-Paul McCartney
Her Majesty-The Beatles
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

I have a very good friend who's buddy arranged for him to get a free strip tease from a stripper friend of ours who lived in our dorm. She walked into his room after he had gone to bed, slipped "Closer" into his CD player, and proceeded to get down. He said it was at the same time one of the greatest and most uncomfortable experiences of his life.
