what greatest hits cds stand out from the rest in your opinion? if you had to choose 5 of them to entirely replace your music collection, which would you pick?
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

Interesting topic, Damon...

In no particular order:

-The Beatles 1967-1970
-Neil Young Decade
-The Beastie Boys Anthology
-Bob Dylan Greatest Hits Volume 2
-REM Eponymous

Honorable mention:
-Abba Gold
-Creedence Clearwater Revival Chronicle
-John Lennon Lennon Legend
-the Mamas & the Papas 16 of their Greatest Hits
-Badfinger The Best of...
-Steely Dan A Decade of Steely Dan
-the Talking Heads Sand in the Vasoline
-Blur The Singles (box set of all UK singles...does this count? I guess favorite box sets should be another topic)

for me it would have to be...

the beatles the beatles 67-70
blur the best of blur
oasis the mastrplan (the previously mentioned b side comp)
led zeppelin 4 disc set disc #3
billy joel greatest hits volume 2

also notable in my book...

elton john greatest hits volume 1
eric clapton cream of clapton
rush retrospective

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits is fairly essential.
I also love the Pet Sounds Sessions boxed set.

I agree with a lot that's been said. Here's mine:

Tom Petty
Beatles 67-70
Sly And The Family Stone Anthology/Greatest Hits (both are great)
The Very Best of Larry Graham and Graham Central Station
The Meters Anthology (Disc 1)
And for old time's sake, Eagles vol. 1
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

I like to consistently see Beatles 67-70 on everyone's list. Add it to mine.

For my REM jones, I'd probably ask for the Automatic Box over Eponymous.
Sonic Youth - Screaming Fields of Sonic Love
SP - Pisces Iscariot
Thelonious Monk - Monk Alone

However, I must add that the best Bowie compilation definitely must be Bowie at the Beeb, the second disc. Very rocking indeed.

How true, no one will ever pass jamie. We should erect a monument in his honor. We could have Cyndi Lauper sing at the unveiling.

Damn, how could I forget that? (The Greatest Hits, I mean...I've never heard the Anthology)

Also, Damon, please don't hesitate to "pass" me (in number of posts). I am getting old and am slowing down, whereas you're a strapping young stud who needs to run free. You should know, however: it's lonely at the top.

well, i have no intention of having another week like that. it was just a way of passing while my friends were all on vacation. nothing more, nothing less.

as for ray and i having a conversation- sorry about that. he doesn't really have internet access at home, so i got a little giddy at seeing him around here.

nice pun, by the way.

I guess I'll just have to list the Greatest Hits CD's I own (which are few)

1. The Masterplan-Oasis
2.Familiar To Millions-Oasis (okay, 90% of the songs were singles so i count this)
3.1-The Beatles
4.Sounds Of Science-Beastie Boys (I guess this counts)
5. Um...LIve From Central Park-Sheryl Crow (not a greatest hits but...I don't have many...)

Yes!! Someone listed Neil Diamond (I assume you're talking about "His 12 Greatest Hits", right?)

In addition to what was already listed:

I recently bought the new Who Ultimate Collection and like it a lot. Fortunately they got most of the good stuff onto disc 1. Disc 2 doesn't get as much action in my CD player.

I've never been a huge Rolling Stones fan, but Hot Rocks is pretty good.

The Doors 2CD set is the bomb.

Also good is the Jackson 5 Greatest Hits (I think they called it Anthology or something)

But of course. I can't tell you how much it pains me that Denny Diamond is playing this Friday at the Slow Bar, while I'll be in Atlanta for the Features/Character show. Of course I'm making the right choice, but it was a close call.

Yeah, Denny Diamond *is* good stuff-- almost as good as the original (I imagine). Of course, he seems to swing by Nashvile every two months or so, so I'm sure your next opportunity won't be too far around the corner.
