Man I got The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society for Christmas. I just put it in and all I can say is, "Matt Pelham must love this band."

Yes, I imagine Matt probably does love The Kinks, as any person who has experienced them should.

Ray Davies is going to have a ball with this topic.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

ah yes....."V.G.P.S" is indeed an amazing album. it is absolutely perfect. every song is a keeper....the epic title track, "big sky", "picture book", "wicked anabella", "people take pictures of each other"....the list goes on and on.....the kinks are one of the greatest groups to ever walk the face of the earth, and they are criminally underrated. ray davies is/was an amazing songwriter....during their prime of 1966-1969, the kinks released four spectacular albums: "face to face", "something else", "V.G.P.S.", and "arthur" which still blow my mind every time i listen to them....

my favorite kinks song (as of right now): "autumn almanac"

god save the kinks

Originally, Wes Anderson's "Rushmore" was to be set entirely to the music of The Kinks. Personally, I'm glad he decided against that idea, but I think it would have been interesting. Forced to pick, The Kinks' song that made it is probably my favorite in the film other than The Rolling Stones' I am Waiting.

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.

Goodness! I just decided to look up the band's history, and they seem to have quite a career... is it all good? Where should one start and where should one stop?

ray pretty much hit it when he said face to face, something else, village green, and arthur. kontroversy is also good.

if you're looking for a good place to start, try the two-disc compilation "kink kronikles"--it was my first kinks purchase. i found one of the discs at cd warehouse (sold to the store by rollum, who needed money for cigs) and the other at digital planet (also sold by rollum, i do believe). you have to question a man who puts cigarettes before the kinks.

my favorite kinks song: wonderboy.

Yeah, I figured the Ray-recommended albums were solid, but I was wondering if the worthwhile stuff extended beyond that...

I'll look into the Kink Kronikles. Thanks.

Concerning the Kinks:

The Great:

Face to Face
Village Green Preservation Society
Arthur

The Good:

Something Else
Muswell Hillbillies
Kontroversy
Schoolboys in disgrace (really under-rated!)

The really early stuff is pretty good. The mid to late 60s were AMAZING. I wouldn't touch anything after Schoolboys in Disgrace (1975) if I were you.

Oh, and the best song in Rushmore is definitely the end of "A Quick One While He's Away." Amazing.

To answer the original question, Matt once told me that he thought Arthur was the greatest record of all time. I think lawnwrangler may have been there.
Anyway, I would say that the Kinks are probably one of The Features top three influences.
