The Most Overrated Band/Artist in Music. I don't believe that this topic has ever come up before, so I thought I would ask it.

There is no way to answer this question without pissing lots of people off unless you say Creed or something. Maybe I'll wait and see the other posts and get brave enough to answer.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

Most over-rated artist ever? Flame me if you want to, but I have to vote for:

The Doors

The Doors were not a bad band, mind you. They had some good material. But they are consistently placed on the same pedestal as legends like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Who, the Beatles and the Stones. And I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. To me, the Doors were some pretty good musicians, with a highly overrated front man. To me, Jim Morrison was an always-wasted, really good-looking guy, with a bad attitude and a lot of bad poetry.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I'm always up for getting into arguments that I can't actually back up because I consider myself a raging illiterate.

I could say Aerosmith but I'm going to leave that to Iwantelvis since she actually has the hatred for them.

I could say Radiohead but I really think that they are stellar and do deserve every critical praise they get. I just personally get sick of hearing about them all the time.

Okay this is hard. I'll just say that Creed sucks and leave it at that.

i'd have to say eric clapton. as much as i like him, he's way overrated. cream was cool, the bluesbreakers, and blind faith were ok, and derek and the dominoes had it's high points- layla, bell bottom blues, little wing cover being the obvious ones. however, clapton as a guitar player really declined after the initial "wow, distorted blues sound cool" thing wore off. maybe bonnie, delaney and friends screwed him up. i dunno. all i know is that his guitar playing doesn't really impress me and i hate the annoying backup singers that he seems to be so fond of.

overrated bands :

Pantera- these guys really suck, their live show sucks, their music sucks, lyrics....

Metallica- These guys are supposed to be legends or whatever, but i think they're horrible, and james' stressed extra syllable on every single word ....
(ex. im-a gonn-ahh gooo-ahhh to-ah the market-ahhh and getoooh some bacoahhhhn))

.... some of their lyrics were okay... esp. the black album,
i just think their overrated, even though the S & M album was really good,
anyone thinks these guys are super-special, they should just pick up a misfits, motorhead, or a sabbath record.

Garth Brooks- suuure this is the guy that brought pop sensiblity into country music, but so what, he's only written like 1/4 of the songs on all 38 of his albums, if i were ronnie skaf's puppet, i'd be a legend, too.

I'll agree with damon and say Eric Clapton. Yes, his work with the Yardbirds was excellent (however, i do like Jeff Beck's guitar work better), and his prime moments were wtih Cream. But for some reason, people put Clapton on a throne and worship him. A lot of his 70's solo material is absolute shit.

However, my main selection for overrated artist is Jimi Hendrix. I'm not saying that he is not the revolutionary musician that he is. He did write some of the finest and most enduring music of the 60's. I just hate it that some people think that Jimi Hendrix is the "King of All Music". Some people are even bold enough to pick Hendrix over the Beatles as the most influential artist ever. I thought that his arrangements were very good. Some of his lyrics , however, are a tad bit cliched to me. And he wasnt that good of a singer either. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

I agree with Overemo about Metallica. I think that their music is pretty much crap. Maybe it's just not for me, but I have never been able to tolerate sitting through one song. And, the comment about the stressed syllables is so true.

I think Metallica and Pantera were the absolute best at what they did. I think they both kinda suck at what they're doing now. One must keep in mind that different genres of music require different types of standards. Lyrics are NOT the standard in metal music. (I will say, though, that the Misfits and Black Sabbath had some pretty cool lyrics and topics they explored.) I also disagree that Pantera's live show sucks, especially in the early 90s. Their shows accomplished exactly what they set out to accomplish: getting drunk rednecks pissed off enough to beat the shit out of each other.

I think the same can be said of Garth Brooks. If you judge country stars by whether or not they write their own material, then about 95% of the industry is overrated. I'm not saying that this isn't true, but...

i would have to agree with that, even though it isn't really my kind of music. i guess you could possibly say that the genre doesn't appeal to you, but it's pretty foolish to deny that they are the best at what they do.

Yes, but i've heard many-a (many-a) rednecks claim he's one of the greatest songwriters ever. When they're too illiterate to read the album creds,
and idolize him for his songwriting talent, they are overrating him.

Ok, now that I have my body armor in place & my security system set, I have to say that the Velvet Underground is my pick. This is not to say that I don't love some of their songs. I just don't think their catalog as a whole stands up to the reverence that is heaped on them. And I think a lot of the singing/songwriting/musicianship is mediocre. I have to admit that I haven't been a serious listener of their music, since so much of it is not interesting to me, so if someone wants to try to set me straight with some recommendations, that would be welcome.

hahaha, i have a feeling that a lot of people are going to disagree with you. personally, i've made no effort to really get into them, but from what i have heard (largely in part to mr. ray davies...), they're ok. nothing i would want to devote my life to or anything.

Am I the only one who finds it amusing that Velvet Underground has been considered the most overrated AND underrated band ever on the same message board?

I'm more in the "overrated camp" right now, but I'm giving them more of a chance these days. It's not that they suck, it's just that so many people "verbally fellate" them (to quote Keith).

Remember the 'beer' topic?

well, i didn't really like beer until after the 10th time i tried it.
I was like, "goddamn this is good!"

i didn't really get high until after about the 6th or 7th time i smoked pot.
I was like, "goddamn this is good!"

i listened to all four velvet albums, all the way through around 2 times each.....and then.....
I was like, "goddamn this is good!"

so yeah, they're an acquired taste.
and i don't think they're mediocre musicians.
maybe moe and Lou,
but sterling is a great guitarist,
and John Cale can play every string or key instrument very very well.

i believe they were a talented troop, and they did the VERY BEST at what they went out to do, make all the sad empathetic druggies like me happy, or at least know that others like me exist. Esp. for kids in rural areas who felt cast out because they read dirty french novels or did drugs.

this all happened in the late 1960s, early 70s, before that time did anyone sound like the velvets??

good god folks, in the beginning
this band was managed by Andy Warhol!
their original drummer quit because he didn't feel people should charge admission to see musicians!
Rolling stone said white light/ white heat was the coolest record of all time!.......
( wait that might mean that they are overrated...)

nevermind. They're still one of my fav bands.

the sex pistols. don't get me wrong, i love this band, but they were a complete sham, malcolm mclaren's puppets. sid was only in the band for image, i've heard he only played on "bodies". they had only one proper album, and they spawned some really awful groups.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

the sex pistols, musically, sucked. they were/ are not famous for their "good" music. they got famous bc of their attitude and lifestyles that5 were truly punk as fuck. i am in no way condoning the use of herion. sid viscious was only punk bc he wore chains and beat the fuck out of people, but in general, a creepy character. johnny rotton was a cool guy. an asshole, but a cool guy. their msuic IS good; its punk, its fun to rock out to. but they are overrated bc they got popularity for something other than their music. so i don't really think they are a fair option.

my vote as well goes to the doors. i used to worsdhip them, and they had some decent songs, but all in all, they weren't THAT great. ph34r.gif

I will agree with the sex pistols. They dont sound very revolutionary as everyone says they do. The only thing that stands them apart from the rest of the punk crowd is Johnny Rotten vocal approach. If you take Rotten out, then the Sex Pistols would just sound like any other mediocre hard rock band. I hate it when people say that Sid Vicious WAS the Sex Pistols. Sid Vicious is an idiot who became a "rock legend" just because he was a junkie who killed his girlfriend and then overdosed and died. Oh, and his "bass playing" was absolute shit.

Sid Vicious didn't even play the bass on "Never Mind the Bollocks...", Steve Jones played all the bass parts. Sid Vicious is a moron. Oh, and can I say for the record that I think that "Sid and Nancy" is a piece of shit. It's not very factual at all. If some one wants to see the REAL story of the sex pistols, then they should watch "the filth and the fury", an absolutely amazing film about the band.

sid and nancy is not a good film; very untrue and very lame.
