TOPIC: The Mothers of Invention

I decided to listen to my dad's vinyl copies of "We're Only In It For The Money" and "Absolutely Free" for the first time yesterday, though they have been in my possession for almost eight years. Let me say, what the fuck was I thinking for not listening to those earlier!? WOIIFTM is a beautiful work of looping art. "Who Needs The Peace Corps?" is probably my favorite song on the album, due mostly to the beautiful lyrics that make hippies look like total and complete jackasses (this is better considering the cultural significance of the time). Honestly though, I love the album as a whole.

I haven't listened to Absolutely Free as much, but I like it a lot already. The "plastic people" theme seems to carry through most of the album (or at least what I have listened to) and I like it.

Frank Zappa was brilliant.

I hope that someone else can discuss this with me, but if not, then I will just wait for Ray Davies to post.

All I know is Frank Zappa was a mean Mike Nesmith lookalike, and vice-a-versa.

I doubt that Michael Nesmith ever had a son as uncool as Ahmed Zappa. Speaking of 1960's pop-rock, Brother Love informed me that two former members of the Turtles were in the Mothers of Invention. I was truly freaked out.

My contribution...Zappa pumped out so many albums, it is crazy. I have a friend who has almost all of them on original vinyl. I envy him to death.

Random other Zappa trivia: The real name of the band is The Mothers, record label suits demanded that this be changed. Hence The Mothers of Invention.

Also; Jeff Buckley's dad, Tim, was at one point on Zappa's record label. Tim's band at various times consisted of members of The Mothers. His music alternates between very beautiful, and really fucking strange. I suggest everyone check it out if they enjoy Jeff. Their voices sound extremly similar.

Ceeze - I noticed the Verve record label on my albums and immediately looked at the sheets inside the record. Unfortunately, one is blank and the other shows Verve artists who were in the vein of Sinatra. I was, of course, looking for something cool about the Velvet Underground, but was mildly disappointed to find that there was not anything. Oh well, the Mothers albums are cool enough on their own. Kill ugly radio.

This is a little off-topic, but did you guys hear about the new Food Network show that will star Dweezil Zappa and Lisa Loeb? It will just be the happy couple entertaining their guests from their home with dinner parties and whatnot. It will be called "Dweezil & Lisa". I'll probably check it out. I watch Food Network a lot, and I also think Lisa Loeb is cute.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

She's definitely a babe. Something about IWE reminds me of Lisa Loeb.

My dad toured a lot with Flo & Eddie (the two Turtles members of whom you speak--Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan). He has lots of stories from those days.

I'm pretty sure Dweezil and Ahmet had a show on USA (after WWF) called "Happy Hour". Does that help?

I really liked this show for the first 2 or 3 episodes.

Speaking of Dweezil Zappa, he did the killer guitar theme for the Ben Stiller Show years ago on Fox.

And I really like the Zappa album "Live in New York." I think I first heard it when I was 8 or 10 and I was awestruck by the song "Titties and Beer."
"Sugar, Mr. Poon?"
"No, never, never... thank you."

Speaking of Ben Stiller, I think all those episodes are on DVD now. Has this been covered elsewhere?
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.
